If you wish to wear the poncho slightly differently from the way shown in picture, you can rotate the poncho a little to one side so that the rows of holes are positioned on either side of each shoulder.

DECREASE TIP-1 (evenly spaced):
To work out how to decrease evenly, count the total number of stitches on the needle (e.g. 63 stitches), and divide by the number of decreases to be made (e.g. 3) = 21. In this example, decrease by knitting together approx. every 20th and 21st stitch.

Increase with holes on each side of each marker (= 8 stitches increased on the round). Increase as follows:
Start 1 stitch before the marker, make 2 yarn overs, knit 2 stitches (the marker sits in the middle of these 2 stitches), make 2 yarn overs. Repeat at each of the remaining markers. On the next round drop the first of the 2 yarn overs and knit the other (= 1 stitch, you will get a hole).

To avoid the bind-off edge being tight you can bind off with a needle 1 size larger.

RIDGE/GARTER STITCH (worked in the round):
1 ridge = 2 rounds. Knit 1 round and purl 1 round.

The piece is worked in the round with circular needle, top down. Read WEARING TIP. Cast on 63-72-78 stitches with circular needle size 7 mm / US 10.75 and Melody. Work rib (= knit 1 / purl 2) for 3 cm / 1''. Then continue with stockinette stitch. Work 1 round where you decrease 3-4-2 stitches evenly on round – read DECREASE TIP-1 = 60-68-76 stitches. The next round is worked as follows: * Knit 15-17-19 stitches, insert 1 marker *, work from *-* a total of 4 times. On the next round increase 1 stitch on each side of each marker - read INCREASE TIP = (8 stitches increased on the round). Increase like this every 2nd round until the piece measures approx. 65-68-71 cm / 25½"-26 3/4"-28'' (measured along the markers) - REMEMBER THE GAUGE! Then work 2 RIDGES - see description above. Loosely bind off – read BINDING OFF TIP. The piece measures approx. 67-70-73 cm / 26½-27½"-28 3/4''.

Cut 1 strand of Eskimo of 20 cm / 8'' in length. Fold it double, thread the loop from the right side into a stitch on the bind-off edge on the poncho. Then pull the strand ends through the loop and tighten carefully. Fasten the fringes with approx. 2 cm / 3/4'' between each along the bottom of the poncho. So that the fringe hangs neatly, the strands should be dampened, shaken and dried.

All measurements in charts are in cm.
