EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN:
-------------------------------------------------------
RIDGE/GARTER STITCH (worked in the round):
1 ridge in height = 2 rounds; Knit 1 round and purl 1 round.
PATTERN:
See diagram A.1. The pattern is worked in stockinette stitch.
KNITTING TIP-1:
If you want mittens with a different circumference, you can use a half-size larger or smaller needle. A half-size difference will give 1 cm = 3/8" more/less in circumference, a whole size 2 cm = 3/4" more/less.
KNITTING TIP-2:
To avoid the knitting gauge losing its elasticity when working pattern it is important that the strands at the back are not tight. Use a size larger needle when working pattern if the piece becomes tight.
KNITTING TIP-3:
The length of the thumb-opening kan be adjusted by working more/less rounds before working the marking for the opening.
DECREASE TIP:
Start 2 stitches before the marker, knit 2 together, marker, slip 1 stitch as if to knit, knit 1 and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch (2 stitches decreased).

MITTENS – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE:
The piece is worked in the round with double pointed needles, bottom up. The circumference can be adjusted – read KNITTING TIP-1.
LEFT MITTEN:
Cast on 33-33-39-39-48 stitches with double pointed needles size 2.5 MM = US 1.5 and color forest green DROPS Karisma. Work 2 RIDGES in the round – read description above. Continue as follows:
ROUND 1: Knit.
ROUND 2: * Knit 1, purl 2 *, work from *-* to the end of the round.
Repeat rounds 1 and 2 until the piece measures 3 cm = 1 1/8". Work 2 more ridges.
Change to double pointed needles size 3 MM = US 2.5 and color light grey.
Read KNITTING TIP-2 and work A.1 on the round – AT THE SAME TIME on the first round, adjust the number of stitches to 32-32-40-40-48 stitches (4-4-5-5-6 repeats of A.1 in width).
When A.1 is finished continue with stockinette stitch and color light grey. REMEMBER THE KNITTING GAUGE!
AT THE SAME TIME when the piece measures 7-8-9-10-11 cm = 2 3/4"-3 1/8"-3 1/2"-4"-4 3/8" – read KNITTING TIP-3, work a marking of the thumb-opening:
Work 10-9-13-12-16 stitches of pattern, 5-6-6-7-7 stitches in stockinette stitch with a different color so they are visible, place these stitches back on the left needle and work pattern to the end of the round.
Work until the piece measures 12-14-15-17-19 cm = 4 3/4"-5 1/2"-6"-6 3/4"-7 1/2" from the cast-on edge. There is approx. 2-2-3-3-3 cm = 3/4"-3/4"-1 1/8"-1 1/8"-1 1/8" left; try the mitten on and work to desired length before beginning to decrease.
Insert 1 marker at the beginning of the round and 1 marker after 16-16-20-20-24 stitches. Work stockinette stitch. AT THE SAME TIME on the first round decrease 1 stitch on each side of both markers – read DECREASE TIP (4 stitches decreased). Decrease like this every round a total of 6-6-8-8-9 times = 8-8-8-8-12 stitches.
On the next round knit all stitches together 2 and 2 = 4-4-4-4-6 stitches. Cut the strand, pull it through the remaining stitches, tighten and fasten well. The mitten measures approx. 14-16-18-20-22 cm = 5 1/2"-6 1/4"-7"-8"-8 3/4".
THUMB:
Pull out the strand which was used over the 5-6-6-7-7 stitches for the thumb-opening = 10-12-12-14-14 stitches. Place these stitches on double pointed needles size 3 MM = US 2.5, work stockinette stitch with color light grey and knit up 1 stitch on each side of the thumb (on each side of the 5-6-6-7-7 stitches) = 12-14-14-16-16 stitches.
Work until the thumb measures 2½-3-4-4½-5 cm = 1"-1 1/8"-1 1/2"-1 5/8"-2". There is 1 cm = 3/8" left; try the mitten on and work to desired length before starting to decrease.
Insert 1 marker in each side of the thumb. On the next 2 rounds decrease 1 stitch on each side of both markers – remember DECREASE TIP = 4-6-6-8-8 stitches. On the next round knit all stitches together 2 and 2 = 2-3-3-4-4 stitches.
Cut the strand, pull it through the remaining stitches, tighten and fasten well. The thumb measures approx. 3½-4-5-5½-6 cm = 1 1/4"-1 1/2"-2"-2 1/8"-2 3/8".
RIGHT MITTEN:
Cast on and work in the same way as the left mitten until the piece measures 7-8-9-10-11 cm = 2 3/4"-3 1/8"-3 1/2"-4"-4 3/8".
Now work a marking of the thumb-opening:
Work 17-17-21-21-25 stitches in pattern, 5-6-6-7-7 stitches in stockinette stitch with a different color so it is visible, place these stitches back on the left needle and work pattern to the end of the round.
The rest of the mitten is worked in the same way as the left mitten.
THUMB:
Work in the same way as the left thumb.
