Hi There, I have ordered Drops Nepal yarn for the White Sands blanket. I have been reading the beginnings of the pattern. Is it ok to use straight needles? If I have to use circular needles what length do you suggest? Also, when i am trying to follow diagram A1 for square 1 what do you mean by A. 1a(=9 stitches), etc. After you cast on 52 stitches and complete the A 1a,A1b,A1c, A1d,A1c, A1b.A1a, it says you should have70 stitches. Where do the extra stitches come from?
17.02.2023 - 21:11DROPS Design answered:
Dear Nancy, yes, you should be able to work with straight needles, since it's worked back and forth, and there aren't too many stitches to work. For circular needles, you can choose 60 or 80 cm needles, whichever are more confortable for you to work. For square 1, take into account that the first row of the charts include increases (yarn overs), so you will end up with more stitches than the initial number of stitches. The parenthesis after the name of the chart indicates the number of stitches in the first row of the charts (excluding the yarn overs). Happy knitting!

Bon tricot!

INFORMATION FOR PATTERN: GARTER STITCH (back and forth): 1 ridge = knit 2 rows. PATTERN: See diagrams A.1 to A.6. Diagrams show all rows in pattern seen from the right side. See diagram A.7 for assembly. KNITTING TIP: If you want the blanket can be knitted in 4 strips without casting off / casting on between every square - see diagram A.7 for square order. Then assemble only between the 4 strips. CAST-OFF TIP: To avoid a tight cast-off edge when casting off you may use a needle ½ size larger. ---------------------------------------------------------- BLANKET: Work piece back and forth on circular needle. Work 12 squares in total, i.e. 2 of each pattern square. Then sew squares together - read KNITTING TIP and PATTERN above. Read CAST-OFF TIP and REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION! SQUARE-1: Work pattern back and forth according to diagram A.1 as follows: Cast on 52 stitches on circular needle size 5.5 mm with Nepal. Work 2 ridges in GARTER STITCH - see explanation above. Work next row as follows = from right side: 2 stitches in garter stitch, A.1a (= 9 stitches), A.1b (= 3 stitches), A.1c (= 8 stitches), A.1d (= 8 stitches), A.1c (= 8 stitches), A.1b (= 3 stitches), A.1a (= 9 stitches) and 2 stitches in garter stitch. Work back from wrong side. There are now 70 stitches on needle. Then work as follows: 2 stitches in garter stitch, A.1e (= 11 stitches), A.1f (= 6 stitches), A.1g (= 9 stitches), A.1h (= 14 stitches), A.1g (= 9 stitches), A.1f (= 6 stitches), A.1e (= 11 stitches) and 2 stitches in garter stitch. Repeat A.1e to A.1h vertically with 2 stitches in garter stitch in each side. When piece measures approx. 31 cm - finish after row from wrong side, knit 1 row while decreasing 3 stitches over each cable of 6 stitches, decrease 6 stitches over the large cable and decrease 6 stitches evenly over the remaining stitches = 52 stitches. Knit 1 row from wrong side, knit 1 row from right side and knit 1 row from wrong side, cast off. SQUARE-2: Work pattern back and forth according to diagram A.2 as follows: Cast on 52 stitches on circular needle size 5.5 mm with Nepal. Work 2 ridges in GARTER STITCH - see explanation above. Work next row as follows = from right side: 2 stitches in garter stitch, A.2a over the next 44 stitches (= 4 times), A.2b (= 4 stitches) and 2 stitches in garter stitch. Work back from wrong side. There are now 73 stitches on needle. Then work as follows: 2 stitches in garter stitch, A.2c over the next 64 stitches (= 8 times), A.2d (= 5 stitches) and 2 stitches in garter stitch. Repeat A.2c and A.2d vertically with 2 stitches in garter stitch in each side. When piece measures 31 cm - finish after row from wrong side, knit 1 row while decreasing 21 stitches evenly = 52 stitches. There are now 74 stitches on needle. Then work as follows: 2 stitches in garter stitch, A.3c over the next 63 stitches (= 3 times), A.3c (= 7 stitches) and 2 stitches in garter stitch. Repeat A.3c and A.3d vertically with 2 stitches in garter stitch in each side. When piece measures approx. 31 cm - finish after row from wrong side, knit 1 row while decreasing 7 stitches over each cable and decrease 1 stitch evenly over the remaining stitches = 52 stitches. Knit 1 row from wrong side, knit 1 row from right side and knit 1 row from wrong side, cast off. SQUARE-4: Work pattern back and forth according to diagram A.4 as follows: Cast on 52 stitches on circular needle size 5.5 mm with Nepal. Work 2 ridges in GARTER STITCH - see explanation above. There are now 51 stitches on needle. Then work as follows: 2 stitches in garter stitch, A.5c over the next 44 stitches (= 11 times), A.5d (= 3 stitches) and 2 stitches in garter stitch. Repeat A.5c and A.5d vertically with 2 stitches in garter stitch in each side. When piece measures approx. 31 cm - finish after row from wrong side, knit 1 row while increasing 1 stitch = 52 stitches. Knit 1 row from wrong side, knit 1 row from right side and knit 1 row from wrong side, cast off. SQUARE-6: Work pattern back and forth according to diagram A.6 as follows: Cast on 52 stitches on circular needle size 5.5 mm with Nepal. Work 2 ridges in GARTER STITCH - see explanation above. Work next row as follows = from right side: 2 stitches in garter stitch, A.6a over the next 48 stitches (= 6 times) and 2 stitches in garter stitch. Work back from wrong side. There are now 64 stitches on needle. Then work as follows: 2 stitches in garter stitch, A.6b over the next 60 stitches (= 6 times) and 2 stitches in garter stitch. Repeat A.6b vertically with 2 stitches in garter stitch in each side. When piece measures approx. 31 cm - finish after row from wrong side, knit 1 row while decreasing 2 stitches over each cable = 52 stitches. Knit 1 row from wrong side, knit 1 row from right side and knit 1 row from wrong side, cast off. ASSEMBLY: Place squares as shown in diagram A.7. Sew them together first across, then along - sew in outer loops of edge stitches to avoid a chunky seam. |
