------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- RIDGE/GARTER STITCH (worked back and forth): Knit all rows. 1 ridge in height = Knit 2 rows. DECREASE TIP (evenly spaced): To work out how to decrease evenly, count the total number of stitches on needle (e.g. 174 stitches) and divide by number of decreases to be made (e.g. 10) = 17.4. In this example decrease by knitting approx. each 16th and 17th stitch together. BUTTONHOLES (on right band when garment is worn): 1 buttonhole = work 2 together and make 1 yarn over – NOTE: It is neatest if you work the buttonholes by purling 2 together in a section of 2 purled stitches (seen from the right side). On the next row knit the yarn overs to leave a hole. The bottom buttonhole is worked 6 cm from the bottom edge, the top buttonhole is worked just before the beginning of the V-neck. The other 2-2-2-3-3-3 buttonholes are positioned evenly spaced between them. ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------- VEST – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The piece is worked back and forth with circular needle, from mid front and bottom up as far as the armholes. Then the front and back pieces are finished separately. The neck/bands and armhole edges are worked to finish. BODY: Cast on 160-176-188-204-224-244 stitches with circular needle size 4 mm and Air. Purl 1 row from the wrong side, then work as follows from the right side: 1 edge stitch in GARTER STITCH – read description above, * knit 2 / purl 2 *, repeat from *-* until there are 3 stitches left on the row, knit 2 and 1 edge stitch in garter stitch. Continue this rib for 3 cm. Change to circular needle size 5 mm and continue with stocking stitch and 1 edge stitch in garter stitch on each side; decrease 10 stitches evenly spaced on the first row = 150-166-178-194-214-234 stitches – read DECREASE TIP in explanations above. Work stocking stitch with 1 edge stitch in garter stitch in each side until the piece measures 28-29-30-31-32-33 cm from the cast-on edge. REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION! The next row is worked as follows from the right side: Work the first 35-39-42-45-50-55 stitches, cast off the next 6-6-6-8-8-8 stitches, work the next 68-76-82-88-98-108 stitches, cast off 6-6-6-8-8-8 stitches and work the last 35-39-42-45-50-55 stitches. The front and back pieces are now finished separately. RIGHT FRONT PIECE: = 35-39-42-45-50-55 stitches. Work stocking stitch with 1 edge stitch in garter stitch towards mid front and cast off for the armhole as follows: Cast off 2 stitches 1-1-1-2-2-2 times and 1 stitch 4-7-8-7-10-14 times. AT THE SAME TIME when the piece measures 29-30-31-32-33-34 cm, decrease 1 stitch towards the neck by knitting 2 stitches together inside the edge stitch. Decrease like this every 1½ cm a total of 13-14-14-15-15-16 times. After all the decreases there are 16-16-18-19-21-21 stitches left on the needle. Cast off when the piece measures 48-50-52-54-56-58 cm (20-21-22-23-24-25 cm from where stitches were cast off for the armhole). LEFT FRONT PIECE: Work as for the right front piece but reversed. BACK PIECE: = 68-76-82-88-98-108 stitches. Work stocking stitch and cast off for the armholes at the beginning of each row as follows: Cast off 2 stitches 1-1-1-2-2-2 times and 1 stitch 4-7-8-7-10-14 times = 56-58-62-66-70-72 stitches. Continue working until the piece measures 46-48-50-52-54-56 cm (there is approx. 2 cm left to finished length). On the next row from the right side cast off for the neck as follows: Work the first 17-17-19-20-22-22 stitches, cast off the next 22-24-24-26-26-28 stitches and work the last 17-17-19-20-22-22 stitches. The shoulders are finished separately; do not cut the strand – the left shoulder is continued from the wrong side here. LEFT BACK SHOULDER: = 17-17-19-20-22-22 stitches. Work stocking stitch starting from the wrong side and cast off 1 stitch at the beginning of the next row from the right side = 16-16-18-19-21-21 stitches. Continue until the piece measures 48-50-52-54-56-58 cm from the cast-on edge; adjust to match the front piece. Cast off and cut the strand. RIGHT BACK SHOULDER: = 17-17-19-20-22-22 stitches. Work stocking stitch starting from the right side and cast off 1 stitch at the beginning of the next row from the wrong side = 16-16-18-19-21-21 stitches. Continue until the piece measures 48-50-52-54-56-58 cm from the cast-on edge; adjust to match the front piece. Cast off and cut the strand. ASSEMBLY: Sew the shoulder seams. BANDS/NECK: Insert 1 marker mid back; it will be used when working the band/neck. Knit up stitches for the bands inside the 1 edge stitch on the front pieces and the first row around the neck as follows: Start at the bottom of the right front piece and knit up, using circular needle size 4 mm, approx. 112-118-122-126-130-136 stitches up the front piece as far as the marker on the neck – leave the marker here. Then knit up approx. 112-118-122-126-130-136 stitches down the left front piece; the total number of stitches should be divisible by 4 = 224-236-244-252-260-272 stitches. It is important the rib is not too loose with too many stitches or too tight with too few stitches. Work the next row as follows from the wrong side: 1 edge stitch in garter stitch, * purl 2, knit 2 *, work from *-* until there are 3 stitches left, purl 2 and 1 edge stitch in garter stitch. When the rib measures 1½ cm, work BUTTONHOLES on the right band – read description above. Continue working until the rib measures 3 cm. Cast off with knit over knit and purl over purl. EDGE AROUND ARMHOLES: Start from the right side where the piece was divided for the armhole. Using circular needle size 4 mm knit up approx. 84 to 124 stitches around the whole armhole (number of stitches must be divisible by 4). Work rib in the round (knit 2 / purl 2) for 2 cm. Cast off with knit over knit and purl over purl. Work an edge around the other armhole in the same way. ASSEMBLY: Sew buttons onto left band. |
