---------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATION FOR THE PATTERN: ---------------------------------------------------------- GARTER STITCH (back and forth): 1 ridge = knit 2 rows. GARTER STITCH (worked in the round): 1 ridge = 2 rounds. Knit 1 round and purl 1 round. ---------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ---------------------------------------------------------- CARPET - SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: Piece is worked back and forth from approx. centre of carpet and in the round in parts. First work a round circle, then work parts with short rows, garter stitch and stripes. CARPET: Cast on 8 stitches on circular needle size 7 mm = US 10,75 with 3 strands light lavender. Knit 1 row (= from wrong side). Work in GARTER STITCH - see explanation above. On next row begin increase as follows: ROW 1 (= from right side): * Knit 1, 1 yarn over * work from *-* until 1 stitch remains, work 2 stitches in last stitch = 16 stitches. ROW 2 AND ALL ROWS FROM WRONG SIDE: Knit all stitches, work yarn overs twisted to avoid holes. ROW 3: * Knit 2, 1 yarn over *, work from *-* until 2 stitches remain, knit 1, 1 yarn over, knit 1 = 24 stitches. ROW 5: * Knit 3, 1 yarn over *, work from *-* until 3 stitches remain, knit 2, 1 yarn over, knit 1 = 32 stitches. ROW 7: * Knit 4, 1 yarn over *, work from *-* until 4 stitches remain, knit 3, 1 yarn over, knit 1 = 40 stitches. Knit 1 row from wrong side but work yarn overs twisted to avoid holes. Sew circle together in outer loops of edge stitches. Now continue piece in parts as follows: PART 1: Continue with 3 strands off white. Now work short rows back and forth in garter stitch as follows: Insert 1 marker, this marks beginning of round. ROW 1 (= right side): Knit until 2 stitches remain before marker (= 38 stitches), turn and tighten yarn. ROW 2 (= wrong side): Knit until 2 stitches remain before marker (= 36 stitches), turn and tighten yarn. ROW 3 (= right side): Knit until 4 stitches remain before marker (= 34 stitches), turn and tighten yarn. ROW 4 (= wrong side): Knit until 4 stitches remain before marker (= 32 stitches), turn and tighten yarn. ROW 5 (= right side): Knit until 6 stitches remain before marker (= 30 stitches), turn and tighten yarn. ROW 6 (= wrong side): Knit until 6 stitches remain before marker (= 28 stitches), turn and tighten yarn. Continue like this, i.e. by working 2 stitches less on every turn until 1 row has been worked over the last 4 stitches from wrong side (= 9 ridges). Cut the yarn. Continue in the round with 3 strands mustard as follows: Begin at marker (= beginning of round). ROUND 1: * Knit 2, 1 yarn over (i.e. make 1 yarn over where the short row was turned) * work from *-* the entire round (= 20 stitches increased) = 60 stitches. ROUND 2: Purl all stitches, do not work yarn overs twisted; they should make holes. REMEMBER THE KNITTING GAUGE! PART 2: Move the marker 30 stitches (i.e. displace beginning of round with 30 stitches, work part 2 and begin from marker). Continue with 3 strands light lavender as follows: ROUND 1: * Knit 2, 1 yarn over *, work from *-* over all stitches = 90 stitches. ROUND 2: Purl all stitches, work yarn overs twisted to avoid holes. Now work part 2 with short rows back and forth in garter stitch as follows: ROW 1 (= right side): Knit until 3 stitches remain before marker (= 87 stitches), turn and tighten yarn. ROW 2 (= wrong side): Knit until 3 stitches remain before marker (= 84 stitches), turn and tighten yarn. ROW 3 (= right side): Knit until 6 stitches remain before marker (= 81 stitches), turn and tighten yarn. ROW 4 (= wrong side): Knit until 6 stitches remain before marker (= 78 stitches), turn and tighten yarn. ROW 5 (= right side): Knit until 9 stitches remain before marker (= 75 stitches), turn and tighten yarn. ROW 6 (= wrong side): Knit until 9 stitches remain before marker (= 72 stitches), turn and tighten yarn. Continue like this, i.e. by working 3 stitches less on every turn until 1 row has been worked over the last 6 stitches from wrong side (= 14 ridges). Cut the yarn. Continue in the round with 3 strands mustard as follows: Begin at marker (= beginning of round). ROUND 1: * Knit 3, 1 yarn over (i.e. make 1 yarn over where the short row was turned) * work from *-* the entire round (= 30 stitches increased) = 120 stitches. ROUND 2: Purl all stitches, do not work yarn overs twisted; they should make holes. PART 3: Move the marker 60 stitches (i.e. displace beginning of round with 60 stitches, work part 3 and begin from marker). Continue with 3 strands off white as follows: ROUND 1: * Knit 4, 1 yarn over *, work from *-* over all stitches = 150 stitches. ROUND 2: Purl all stitches, work yarn overs twisted to avoid holes. Now work part 3 with short rows back and forth in garter stitch as follows: ROW 1 (= right side): Knit until 5 stitches remain before marker (= 145 stitches), turn and tighten yarn. ROW 2 (= wrong side): Knit until 5 stitches remain before marker (= 140 stitches), turn and tighten yarn. ROW 3 (= right side): Knit until 10 stitches remain before marker (= 135 stitches), turn and tighten yarn. Continue like this, i.e. by working 5 stitches less on every turn until 1 row has been worked over the last 10 stitches from wrong side (= 14 ridges). Cut the yarn. Continue in the round with 3 strands mustard as follows: Begin at marker (= beginning of round). ROUND 1: * Knit 5, 1 yarn over (i.e. make 1 yarn over where the short row was turned) * work from *-* the entire round (= 30 stitches increased) = 180 stitches. ROUND 2: Purl all stitches, do not work yarn overs twisted; they should make holes. PART 4: Move the marker 90 stitches (i.e. displace beginning of round with 90 stitches, work part 4 and begin from marker). Continue with 3 strands light lavender as follows: ROUND 1: * Knit 6, 1 yarn over *, work from *-* over all stitches = 210 stitches.
