Tips & Help

Thank you for choosing DROPS Design!

We do our best to make our patterns easy to follow.

For that purpose, each of our patterns has specific tutorial videos to help you, which you will find at the bottom of the page.

We have also step-by-step lessons to help you understand some of the techniques we use in our patterns. You'll find them here!

Gauge: 20 sts x 26 rows = 10 x 10 cm [4" x 4"] on larger needles in stockinette st.

Garter st, when knitting flat: Knit all sts, all rows.

Knitting tips: All decs are made on right side rows.
Dec 1 st inside 3 edge sts at armhole edge and inside 2 edge sts at neck edge as follows:
Before edge sts: K 2 tog.
After edge sts: sl 1, K 1, psso.

Pattern: The sweater is knit entirely in stockinette st. The design on the front is embroidered (or crocheted) on after knitting. Various sts are purled (seen from the right side) to mark the placement of the design.

Front: Cast on 86-92-98-104 sts with Bomull-Lin. Knit 2 rows garter st, then inc 1 st at center front = 87-93-99-105 sts. Change to stockinette st.
Read the entire next section before knitting:
When the piece measures 10 cm [4"] inc 1 st at each side, repeat inc when the piece measures 20 cm [7 7/8"] = 91-97-103-109 sts. At the same time when the piece measures 15-16-17-18 cm [5 7/8" - 6.25" - 6.75" - 7"] knit Pattern 1- see instructions above - over the center 37 sts. At the same time when the piece measures 30-31-32-34 cm [11.75" - 12.25" - 12 5/8" - 13 3/8"] bind off 3-4-5-6 sts at each side for armhole. Then dec 1 st inside 3 edge sts every other row 6-7-8-10 times - see knitting tips = 73-75-77-77 sts. When the piece measures 36-38-39-41 cm [14 1/8" - 14 7/8" - 15.25" - 16 1/8"] bind off the center 5 sts for the neck. Now keep the outermost st at each neck edge in garter st and dec 1 st at each neck edge every other row 14-14-15-15 times inside 2 edge sts - see knitting tips. Bind off the remaining 20-21-21-21 sts on each shoulder when the piece measures 48-50-52-54 cm [18 7/8" - 19.75" - 20.5" - 21.25"].

Back: Cast on and knit the same as the front, but do not knit Pattern 1. Bind off for armhole as on front and continue until the piece measures 46-48-50-52 cm [18 1/8" - 18-7/8" - 19.75" - 20.5"]. Bind off the center 31-31-33-33 sts for the neck. Keep the outermost st at each neck edge in garter st and on the next row dec 1 st at each neck edge - see knitting tips = 20-21-21-21 sts remain on each shoulder. Bind off the remaining sts when the piece measures 48-50-52-54 cm [18 7/8" - 19.75" - 20.5" - 21.25"].

Sleeve: Cast on 44-50-50-56 sts with Bomull-Lin. Knit 2 rows garter st, continue with stockinette st. When the piece measures 5 cm [2"] inc 1 st at each side 11-10-12-10 times:
Size S: every 6 rows.
Sizes M and XL: alternately every 6 and 7 rows.
Size L: alternately every 5 and 6 rows
= 66-70-74-76 sts. When sleeve measures 32-31-31-31 cm [12 5/8" - 12.25" - 12.25" - 12.25"] bind off for sleeve cap at each side every other row: 3 sts 2 times, 2 sts 2 times, 1 st 2-3-4-5 times, then bind off 2 sts at each side until the piece measures 40-40-41-42 cm [15.75" - 15.75" - 16 1/8" - 16.5"]. Bind off the remaining sts.

Motif on front: Embroider design with double strands of Muskat – see Pattern.1 - along lines marked by purl sts. The innermost stripe = turquoise, next stripe = violet and the outermost stripe = apple green. Each st should be approx. 1 cm [3/8"] long. (Stripes may be crocheted on by inserting hook through back side of piece and pulling yarn through fabric.) Then embroider 1 flower in each point of outermost stripe with turquoise and 1 flower in the center of motif with apple green - see Pattern 1 and Figs. C and D. Sew a bead in the center of each flower.

Assembly: Sew shoulder seams. Sew in sleeves. Sew sleeve and side seams using edge sts as a seam allowance.

Neck: Crochet around outermost sts along neck opening as follows: Row 1: sc with apple green. Row 2: sc with turquoise. Row 3: sc with violet.

Body: Crochet around bottom edge as follows: rows 1 and 2: Crochet same as neck, with 1 sc in each knitted st. Row 3: Thread 28-30-32-34 beads on violet Muskat. Crochet as follows: * 5 sc, ch 2, pull 1 bead to hook and fasten with 1 sc in the 2nd ch, ch 1, skip over 1 sc from previous row *, repeat from * - *.

Sleeve: Crochet around bottom edge as follows: rows 1 and 2: Crochet same as Body. Row 3: Thread 7-8-8-9 beads on violet Muskat and crochet around sleeve same as Body.

Beads at neck: cut 3 strands of yarn approx. 6-8 cm [2 3/8" - 3 1/8"] long, thread 1 bead on each strand, fold strand with bead at middle and knot to hold bead, then fasten the 3 strands in the same st at center front of neck.
