NOTE: This pattern is written in British English. All measurements in charts are in cm. For conversion from cm to inches - click here. There are different terms for crocheting in British and American English. If this pattern includes crochet, click for "crochet terms" here. For this pattern in American English, please click here.
Knitting tension: 17 sts x 24 rows on needles size 5mm in stocking stitch = 10x10cm,

Pattern: See diagrams M.1 to M.3, the diagram shows the pattern from the right side

Increasing: Increases are made on every other row by making a yarn over needle on both sides of the marking thread (make yarn over needle from right side and purl yarn over needle on next row). At the same time, cast on 2 new sts at the end of every row until finished measurements.

Shawl: Due to number of sts, knit shawl back and forth on a circular needle. Start at the top and knit down and out – see increasing. Cast on 5 sts on needle size 5mm using off-white Vivaldi and insert a marking thread in the middle st (let the marking thread run through piece as you progress). Knit stocking stitch whilst increasing as described under “Increases” until finished measurements. When there’s 47 sts on needle (piece measures approx 7cm mid back), knit next row as follows from the right side: knit 1, M1 (= 14 sts), knit 8, M1 mirrored (in order pattern is identical on both sides of shawl), knit 1 and cast on 2 new sts. Continue the pattern like this whilst increasing as before. NB! Knit new sts in stocking stitch until they fit into pattern.
When shawl measures approx 30cm mid back – adjust after 2 rows stocking stitch in pattern – knit 6 rows garter stitch, change to dark pink and continue in M2. NB! 1st row in M2 = wrong side. Begin M2 within 1 st. Purl increased sts not fitting into pattern from right side and knit from wrong side until they fit into pattern. Remember to mirror pattern mid back, i.e. knit M2 from left to right after middle of shawl. When shawl measures approx 39cm, change to Vivaldi off-white and knit 6 rows garter stitch. Then change to Vilvaldi beige and knit M3. NB! begin M3 within 1 st. Knit sts not fitting into pattern in stocking stitch until they fit into pattern (also applies to increased sts at sides). Remember, there should be an equal amount of garter sts on either side of mid back before M3.
When shawl measures approx 49cm (after 4 reports of M3), change to Vivaldi brown. Knit M3 one more time = 305 sts on needle and cast off loosely. NB! Knit 1st row of M3 on the row you cast off in order that the edge becomes wavy.

Crochet borders: Crochet a row of chain stitches using crochet hook 4mm and Vivaldi dark pink on all three sides as follows (crochet in the middle garter st over M2 seen from the bottom): 1 dc in first st *4 ch, skip 2 st, 1 dc in next st*, repeat from *-*. Crochet a similar border using Vivaldi off-white at the top of shawl and brown down the two sides.
