------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- GARTER STITCH: Knit all rows, from both the right and wrong side. 1 ridge in height = knit 2 rows. PATTERN: See diagrams A.1 and A.2. The diagrams are worked from right to left when working from the right side and left to right when working from the wrong side. DECREASE TIP-1 (for cables): From the right side, decrease 2 stitches in each cable (6 cable-stitches become 4 stocking stitches): Knit 2 twisted together, knit 2, knit 2 twisted together. DECREASE TIP-2 (for armholes): All decreases are worked from right side. AFTER 9 STITCHES: Purl 2 twisted together (1 decreased stitch). BEFORE 9 STITCHES: Work until there are 11 stitches left on row, purl 2 together (1 decreased stitch). DECREASE TIP-3 (mid-under sleeves): Decrease 1 stitch on each side of the marker as follows: Work until there are 10 stitches left before the marker, purl 2 together, work 16 stitches as before (marker sits in the middle of these 16 stitches), purl 2 twisted together (2 stitches decreased). ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- JUMPER – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The pattern uses both long and short needles; start with the length which fits the number of stitches and change when necessary. The piece is worked in the round, bottom up as far as the armholes. It is then divided and the front and back pieces are finished separately, back and forth. The shoulders are sewn together. Stitches are knitted up around the armholes and the sleeves started back and forth in short rows for the sleeve cap, then finished in the round. Stitches are knitted up around the neckline and the neck is worked in the round. BODY: Cast on 256-288-320-320-352-384-416 stitches with circular needle size 3 mm, 1 strand DROPS Sky and 1 strand DROPS Kid-Silk (2 strands). Knit 1 round. Then work rib as follows: Purl 1, * knit 2, purl 2 *, work from *-* until there are 3 stitches left, knit 2 and purl 1. Continue this rib for 3-3-3-3-4-4-4 cm. Change to circular needle size 3.5 mm. Insert 1 marker-thread at the beginning of the round (= side). Work PATTERN – read explanation above, as follows (the pattern should fit the rib neatly): * A.1 8-9-10-10-11-12-13 times, A.2 8-9-10-10-11-12-13 times *, insert 1 marker-thread before the next stitch (= side), work from *-* 1 more time. Continue this pattern in the round. Remember to maintain the knitting tension. Work until the piece measures 30-32-31-33-35-33-35 cm, with the next round an even row in the diagrams; this is important so you continue cabling from the right side when working back and forth. Work the next round as before and decrease 2-2-2-2-2-4-4 stitches on each side of both marker-threads (2 stitches in each of the 1-1-1-1-1-2-2 cables nearest the marker-threads – read DECREASE TIP-1 (8-8-8-8-8-16-16 decreased stitches) = 248-280-312-312-344-368-400 stitches. DIVIDE FOR THE ARMHOLES: On the next round (odd row in the diagrams), divide for the front and back pieces: Cast off the first 5-5-5-5-5-11-11 stitches for the armhole, work the next 114-130-146-146-162-162-178 stitches (= front piece), cast off the next 10-10-10-10-10-22-22 stitches for the armhole (marker-thread sits in the middle of these stitches), work the next 114-130-146-146-162-162-178 stitches (= back piece), cast off the last 5-5-5-5-5-11-11 stitches for the armhole. Cut the strand. The front and back pieces are finished separately, back and forth. BACK PIECE: = 114-130-146-146-162-162-178 stitches. Continue the pattern back and forth, with the outermost stitch on each side worked in GARTER STITCH – read explanation above. AT THE SAME TIME on the next row from the right side, begin decreasing for the armholes; decrease 1 stitch inside the outermost 9 stitches on each side (= 1 garter stitch, 1 purled stitch, 6 cable-stitches, 1 purled stitch) - read DECREASE TIP-2. Decrease like this every 2nd row 6-12-22-22-22-20-20 times, then every 4th row 2-4-2-2-2-4-4 times (8-16-24-24-24-24-24 stitches decreased by each armhole) = 98-98-98-98-114-114-130 stitches. Continue working until the piece measures 48-50-52-54-56-58-60 cm. Now decrease 2 stitches in each of the 6 middle cables – remember DECREASE TIP-1 (12 decreased stitches). On the next row cast off the middle 32 stitches for the neckline and finish each shoulder separately. Read the next section before continuing. SHOULDERS (back piece): = 27-27-27-27-35-35-43 stitches. Continue the pattern back and forth. AT THE SAME TIME, cast off for the neckline at the beginning of each row from the neck: 1 stitch 2 times. AT THE SAME TIME, when the piece measures 49-51-53-55-57-59-61 cm from the cast-on edge, place stitches on a stitch holder for the diagonal shoulder as follows. NOTE: To avoid cutting the working strand, work the stitches before placing them on the holder: Start from the armhole and place the first 6-6-6-6-7-7-8 stitches on the holder 3-3-3-3-4-4-4 times every 2nd row, then the last 7-7-7-7-5-5-9 stitches (working the other stitches on the row as before) = 25-25-25-25-33-33-41 stitches on the holder. Cut the strand. Work the other shoulder in the same way. FRONT PIECE: = 114-130-146-146-162-162-178 stitches. Continue the pattern back and forth, with the outermost stitch on each side worked in garter stitch. AT THE SAME TIME on the next row from the right side begin decreasing for the armholes; decrease 1 stitch inside the outermost 9 stitches on each side in the same way as on the back piece - remember DECREASE TIP-2. Decrease like this every 2nd row 6-12-22-22-22-20-20 times, then every 4th row 2-4-2-2-2-4-4 times (8-16-24-24-24-24-24 stitches decreased by each armhole) = 98-98-98-98-114-114-130 stitches. Continue working until the piece measures 45-46-47-48-49-50-51 cm. Now decrease 2 stitches in each of the 4 middle cables – remember DECREASE-1 (8 decreased stitches). On the next row cast off the middle 22 stitches for the neckline and finish each shoulder separately. Read the next section before continuing. SHOULDERS (front piece): = 34-34-34-34-42-42-50 stitches. Continue the pattern back and forth. AT THE SAME TIME, cast off for the neckline at the beginning of each row from the neck: 2 stitches 3 times and 1 stitch 3 times. The stitches which do not fit into a complete cable repeat are worked in stocking stitch. AT THE SAME TIME, when the piece measures 49-51-53-55-57-59-61 cm from the cast-on edge, place stitches on a stitch holder for the diagonal shoulder in the same way as on the back piece, i.e., Starting from the armhole, place the first 6-6-6-6-7-7-8 stitches on the holder 3-3-3-3-4-4-4 times every 2nd row, then the last 7-7-7-7-5-5-9 stitches (remembering to work the stitches first and the other stitches worked before) = 25-25-25-25-33-33-41 stitches on the holder. Cut the strand. Work the other shoulder in the same way. ASSEMBLY: Place one set of shoulder stitches on needle size 3.5 mm. Purl 1 row from the wrong side, decreasing 6-6-6-6-8-8-10 stitches evenly spaced = 19-19-19-19-25-25-31 stitches (to avoid holes, pick up the strand between 2 stitches and knit it twisted together with the first stitch on the left needle). Cast off slightly loosely with knit from the right side. Repeat on each shoulder. Sew the shoulder-seams inside the cast-off edges, leaving 2 purled rows mid-top of shoulder. SLEEVES: The sleeve is worked top down. Lay the piece flat and insert 1 marker in the middle of the cast-on stitches under the sleeve and 1 marker in the shoulder-line. Use circular needle size 3.5 mm and knit up tightly or use a smaller needle size. KNIT UP STITCHES AS FOLLOWS: Start by the bottom marker and knit up 96-96-112-112-112-128-128 stitches around the armhole, with equal numbers of stitches between the markers. Work the first round as follows: A.1 6-6-7-7-7-8-8 times, marker, A.2 6-6-7-7-7-8-8 times. Continue this pattern but now working short rows for the sleeve cap as follows (to give the sleeve a better fit). SLEEVE CAP: Start mid-under the sleeve. ROW 1 (right side): Work to 9 stitches past the marker on top of the sleeve, turn – read KNITTING TIP. ROW 2 (wrong side): Work to 9 stitches past the marker, turn. ROW 3 (right side): Work to 2 stitches past the previous turn, turn. ROW 4 (wrong side): Work to 2 stitches past the previous turn, turn. Repeat ROWS 3 and 4 until you have turned a total of 26-34-40-40-40-40-48 times (13-17-20-20-20-20-24 times each side, with the last row from the wrong side). NOTE: As more and more stitches are worked into the pattern and you begin new cables, make sure to begin the cables on the same row and when turning in the middle of a cable, delay the cabling to the next time cabling is shown in the diagram. Remember to cable as shown in A.1 before the marker and as shown in A.2 after the marker (from the wrong side, knit above knit and purl above purl). AFTER THE LAST TURN: After the last time you work row 4, turn and work from the right side to the beginning of the round (mid-under the sleeve). SLEEVE CONTINUED: Continue the pattern in the round. AT THE SAME TIME after the first round, decrease mid-under the sleeve 2 stitches 2 times every 2nd round, then decrease 2 stitches 6 times every 1½ cm – read DECREASE TIP-3 = 80-80-96-96-96-112-112 stitches. Continue working until the sleeve measures 53-54-55-56-53-54-52 cm from the shoulder-marker. Change to double pointed needles size 3 mm. Work rib (knit 2 and purl 2), making sure the rib fits the cabled pattern in the same way as on the body. When the rib measures 3-3-3-3-4-4-4 cm, cast off slightly loosely with rib. The sleeve measures approx. 56-57-58-59-57-58-56 cm from the shoulder. NECK: Use circular needle size 3 mm and 1 strand of each quality (2 strands). Starting on one shoulder-line, knit up 92-92-96-96-100-100-104 stitches around the neckline, inside 1 stitch and including the stitches from the holder. The stitch count should be divisible by 4. Make sure the rib fits nicely across the 4 middle cables on the front, i.e., knit up 8 stitches across each repeat of the pattern. Work rib in the round (knit 2 and purl 2) for 3-3-3-4-4-4-4 cm. Cast off with rib. |
