Thank you so much for a remarkable quick response to my question, considering the time of year!! I wasn't expecting anything until the New Year! I shall certainly look at the colours recommended. Thank you again and Happy New Year.

Hi there, I would like to try to knit a child's Nordic cardigan pattern no. me-080-bn Edge of the Woods knitted in Drops Extra Fine Merino. Is it possible to change the wool to Drops Karisma and if so how do I substitute the colours to match the ones in the pattern?
30.12.2024 - 14:50DROPS Design answered:
Dear Margaret, DROPS Merino Extra Fine and Karisma are from the same yarn group, so you can substitute one for the other perfectly as long as the gauge still matches, so remember to work a swatch beforehand with the new yarn. To change colours, you could change: colour 15 for uni color 69 light grey green; colour 06 for mix 54 beige brown; olive 41 (which is discontinued)could be uni colour 52 dark mustard, colour 37 for mix 50, sea green, colour 07 for mix 55, light beige brown and Karisma 01 off-white (the same as in Merino). You can also check all Karisma colours and choose them yourself here: https://www.garnstudio.com/yarn.php?show=drops-karisma&cid=19. Happy knitting!

------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- RIDGE/GARTER STITCH (worked back and forth): Knit all rows. 1 ridge = knit 2 rows. BUTTONHOLE ON NECK: When the neck measures 1½ - 2 cm, work 1 buttonhole on the right side (when the garment is worn). Work from the right side when there are 5 stitches left: Make 1 yarn over, purl 2 together, knit 2 and 1 edge stitch in garter stitch. On the next row (wrong side) knit the yarn over to leave a hole. INCREASE TIP-1 (evenly spaced): To work out how to increase evenly, count the total number of stitches on the needle (e.g. 74 stitches) minus the edge stitches (e.g. 2 stitches) and divide the remaining stitches by the number of increases to be made (e.g. 25) = 2.9. In this example, increase by making 1 yarn over after approx. each 3rd stitch. Do not increase the edge stitches. On the next row work the yarn overs twisted to avoid holes. PATTERN: See diagram A.1. The pattern is worked in stocking stitch. KNITTING TIP: To avoid the knitting tension losing its elasticity when working pattern it is important that the strands at the back are not tight. Use a size larger needle when working pattern if the piece becomes tight. DECREASE TIP (for sleeves): Decrease 1 stitch on either side of the marker thread as follows: Work until there are 3 stitches left before the marker thread, knit 2 together, knit 2 (marker thread sits between these 2 stitches), slip 1 stitch as if to knit, knit 1 and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch. CASTING-OFF TIP: To avoid the cast-off edge being tight you can cast off with a larger size needle. If the edge is still tight, make 1 yarn over after approx. each 4th stitch at the same time as casting off; the yarn overs are cast off as normal stitches. ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- JACKET – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE. The neck is worked back and forth with circular needle, from mid front and top down. The band-stitches are cast off and the yoke continued back and forth. The yoke is divided for body and sleeves and the body continued back and forth with circular needle. The sleeves are worked in the round with double pointed needles, top down. NECK: Cast on 84-84-88-88-92-92 stitches (including 5 band stitches on each side) with circular needle size 3 mm and brown DROPS Merino Extra Fine. Purl 1 row (wrong side), then work as follows from the right side: 1 edge stitch in GARTER STITCH – read description above, * knit 2, purl 2 *, work from *-* until there are 3 stitches left, knit 2 and 1 edge stitch in garter stitch. Continue this rib for 3 cm – remember the BUTTONHOLE on the right side – read description above. When the rib is finished, work as follows from the right side: Cast off the first 5 stitches (the band will be sewn in here later), knit 74-74-78-78-82-82 and increase 25-29-29-33-33-37 stitches evenly over these stitches – read INCREASE TIP, work rib as before over the next 4 stitches and 1 edge stitch in garter stitch. Change to circular needle size 4 mm. Turn and cast off the first 5 stitches, purl until there is 1 stitch left (yarn overs purled twisted) and 1 edge stitch in garter stitch = 99-103-107-111-115-119 stitches. Insert 1 marker after the edge stitch at the beginning of the row; the yoke is measured from this marker! YOKE: Read KNITTING TIP and work as follows from the right side: 1 edge stitch in garter stitch, work A.1 until there are 2 stitches left (= 24-25-26-27-28-29 repeats of 4 stitches), work the first stitch in A.1 (so the pattern is symmetrical) and 1 edge stitch in garter stitch. Continue this pattern. The edge stitches are worked in the same colour as the first/last stitch in the pattern. REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION! AT THE SAME TIME on each row marked with an arrow in A.1, increase stitches as described below – remember INCREASE TIP: Arrow-1: Increase 30-32-34-36-38-40 stitches evenly spaced = 129-135-141-147-153-159 stitches (there is now room for 21-22-23-24-25-26 repeats of A.1 with 6 stitches). Arrow-2: Increase 42-36-46-40-50-44 stitches evenly spaced = 171-171-187-187-203-203 stitches (there is now room for 21-21-23-23-25-25 repeats of A.1 with 8 stitches). Arrow-3: Increase 28-36-32-36-32-40 stitches evenly spaced = 199-207-219-223-235-243 stitches (there is now room for 49-51-54-55-58-60 repeats of A.1 with 4 stitches). Arrow-4: Increase 16-20-20-20-20-24 stitches evenly spaced = 215-227-239-243-255-267 stitches (there is now room for 53-56-59-60-63-66 repeats of A.1 with 4 stitches). Complete A.1, then work with light greyish green until the piece measures 16-16-16-17-18-19 cm from the marker. On the next row divide for the body and sleeves as follows: Work 32-34-36-37-39-41 stitches as before (= front piece), place the next 44-46-48-48-50-52 stitches on 1 thread for the sleeve, cast on 6-6-6-8-8-8 stitches (= in side under sleeve), work 63-67-71-73-77-81 stitches (= back piece), place the next 44-46-48-48-50-52 stitches on 1 thread for the sleeve, cast on 6-6-6-8-8-8 stitches (= in side under sleeve), work the last 32-34-36-37-39-41 stitches as before (= front piece). The body and sleeves are finished separately. THE PIECE IS NOW MEASURED FROM HERE! BODY: = 139-147-155-163-171-179 stitches. Continue with stocking stitch, light greyish green and 1 edge stitch in garter stitch on each side for 15-19-23-25-26-27 cm. Knit 1 row from the right side where you increase 33-33-33-37-37-37 stitches evenly spaced = 172-180-188-200-208-216 stitches. This is done to avoid the following rib being tight. Change to circular needle size 3 mm and work as follows from the wrong side: 1 edge stitch in garter stitch, * purl 2, knit 2 *, work from *-* until there are 3 stitches left, purl 2 and 1 edge stitch in garter stitch. Continue this rib for 3-3-3-4-4-4 cm, then work 1 row of rib with brown. Cast off with knit over knit and purl over purl – read CASTING-OFF TIP! The jacket measures approx. 36-40-44-48-50-52 cm from the shoulder down. SLEEVES: Place the 44-46-48-48-50-52 stitches from the thread on the one side of the piece on double pointed needles size 4 mm and knit up 1 stitch in each of the 6-6-6-8-8-8 stitches cast on under the sleeve = 50-52-54-56-58-60 stitches. Insert a marker thread in the middle of the new stitches under the sleeve. Allow the thread to follow your work onwards; it will be used when decreasing under the sleeve. Continue in the round with stocking stitch and light greyish green for 3 cm. Now decrease 2 stitches under the sleeve – read DECREASE TIP. Decrease like this every 2-2½-3-3½-4½-4½ cm a total of 6-7-7-7-7-8 times = 38-38-40-42-44-44 stitches. Continue working until the sleeve measures 14-20-24-27-31-35 cm from the division. Knit 1 round where you increase 6-6-8-6-8-8 stitches evenly spaced = 44-44-48-48-52-52 stitches. Change to double pointed needles size 3 mm and work rib (knit 2, purl 2) for 3-3-3-4-4-4 cm. Cast off with knit over knit and purl over purl – remember CASTING-OFF TIP! The sleeve measures approx. 17-23-27-31-35-39 cm from the division. Work the other sleeve in the same way. LEFT BAND: Knit up from the right side, inside the 1 edge stitch, 80-92-100-112-120-132 stitches along the left front piece with circular needle size 3 mm and brown (the stitch-number should be divisible by 4). Work the first row from the wrong side as follows: 1 edge stitch in garter stitch, * purl 2, knit 2 *, work from *-* until there are 3 stitches left, purl 2 and 1 edge stitch in garter stitch. Continue this rib for 2½ to 3 cm – adjust so the band is the same width as the cast-off stitches on the neck. Cast off with knit over knit and purl over purl. RIGHT BAND: Work in the same way as the left band but after 1 to 1½ cm work 5-5-5-6-6-6 buttonholes evenly spaced. The bottom buttonhole is 2 to 3 cm from the bottom edge. The neatest buttonholes are worked in purled sections, making 1 yarn over and then purling 2 stitches together. ASSEMBLY: Sew the neck neatly to the band, with the seam on the wrong side. Sew the buttons onto the left band. |
