How do you do the yarn over between 2 stitches of row 3 of A1? At the end of the row I keep on getting more stitches than I cast on for the pattern (I cast on 53 and I keep on getting 60 stitches on my needle)
27.02.2022 - 22:10DROPS Design answered:
Dear Heather, work the middle sts in A.1 as follows: P2, K2 tog x 4 (4 sts decreased), (YO, K1)x7 times, YO (= 8 yarn overs), K2 tog x 4 (4 sts decreased), P2 - this way you should keep constant number of sts = 8 sts decreased compensated with the 8 yarn overs. Happy knitting!

---------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATION FOR THE PATTERN: ---------------------------------------------------------- GARTER STITCH (back and forth): Knit all rows. 1 ridge vertically = knit 2 rows. PATTERN: See diagrams A.1 to A.4. Diagrams show all rows in pattern seen from the right side. Choose diagram for your size in A.2 and A.4. INCREASE TIP-1: Increase 1 stitch inside 1 edge stitch in garter stitch, increase by making a yarn over, on next row (= wrong side) purl yarn over twisted to avoid holes. Work the increased stitches in stocking stitch. INCREASE TIP-2 (evenly): To calculate how to increase evenly, use the total number of stitches on row (e.g. 61 stitches) and divide stitches by number of increases to be done (e.g. 6) = 10.1. In this example increase by making 1 yarn over after approx. every 10th stitch. On next row work yarn overs twisted to avoid holes. INCREASE TIP-3 (applies to sleeves): Work until 1 stitch remains before marker thread, make 1 yarn over, knit 2 (marker thread is between these stitches), make 1 yarn over. On next round knit yarn overs twisted to avoid holes. BUTTONHOLES: Decrease for buttonholes on right band. Decrease from right side when 3 stitches remain on row as follows: Make 1 yarn over, knit the next 2 stitches together, knit last stitch. On next row knit yarn over to make holes. Decrease first buttonhole when piece measures approx. 1 cm. Then decrease the next 4-4-5-5-5-5, approx. 10-10-8½-9-9½-9½ cm apart. CAST-OFF TIP: To avoid a tight cast-off edge when casting off, you may use a larger needle. If this still is too tight make 1 yarn over after approx. every 4th stitch while casting off (cast off yarn overs as stitches). ---------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ---------------------------------------------------------- JACKET - SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: Work front pieces and back piece from the top and down, back and forth on needle. Work sleeves in the round bottom up on double pointed needles/a short circular needle. Sew the piece together as explained in pattern. Then pick up a high collar at the end. BACK PIECE: Cast on 49-53-55-57-59-61 stitches on circular needle size 8 mm with DROPS Snow. Work first row from right side as follows: 1 edge stitch in GARTER STITCH = read explanation above, work 4-6-7-8-9-10 stitches in stocking stitch, A.1 (= 39 stitches), 4-6-7-8-9-10 stitches in stocking stitch, 1 edge stitch in garter stitch. Continue this pattern like this until piece measures 14-14-14-13-13-13 cm. REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION! Now increase 1 stitch in each side inside 1 edge stitch in garter stitch - read INCREASE TIP-1. Increase like this every other row 4-5-6-6-8-9 times in total. Piece now measures approx. 20-21-22-23-24-25 cm, and there are 57-63-67-69-75-79 stitches on needle. At the end of the next 2 rows cast on 2-2-2-4-4-6 new stitches in each side = 61-67-71-77-83-91 stitches. Work next row as follows from right side: 1 edge stitch in garter stitch, work 10-13-15-18-21-25 stitches in stocking stitch, A.1, 10-13-15-18-21-25 stitches in stocking stitch, 1 edge stitch in garter stitch. Continue this pattern until piece measures 47-49-51-53-55-57 cm (= 27-28-29-30-31-32 cm from where new stitches were cast on in each side). Switch to circular needle size 7 mm. Knit 1 row from right side while increasing 6-6-6-8-8-8 stitches evenly - read INCREASE TIP-2 = 67-73-77-85-91-99 stitches. On next row (= from wrong side) work rib as follows: 1 edge stitch in garter stitch, * purl 1, knit 1 *, repeat from *-* until 3 stitches remain, purl 1 and 1 edge stitch in garter stitch. Continue rib for 5 cm, cast off with knit over knit and purl over purl - read CAST-OFF TIP. Piece measures approx. 52-54-56-58-60-62 cm in total from shoulder. LEFT FRONT PIECE: Cast on 14-15-16-16-16-17 stitches on circular needle size 8 mm with DROPS Snow. Work as follows from mid front: A.2 (= 7-7-7-5-5-5 stitches), 6-7-8-10-10-11 stitches in stocking stitch, finish with 1 edge stitch in garter stitch. Work as follows, and increase as shown in diagram. When A.2 has been worked 1 time vertically, there are 29-30-31-33-33-34 stitches on needle. Continue as follows– from right side: 5 band stitches in garter stitch, A.3 (= 17 stitches), 6-7-8-10-10-11, 1 edge stitch in garter stitch. Continue this pattern like this until piece measures 14-14-14-13-13-13 cm. Now increase 1 stitch inside 1 edge stitch in garter side - remember INCREASE TIP-1: Increase like this every other row 4-5-6-6-8-9 times in total. Piece now measures approx. 20-21-22-23-24-25 cm, and there are 33-35-37-39-41-43 stitches on needle. Then cast on 2-2-2-4-4-6 new stitches at the end of next row towards the side = 35-37-39-43-45-49 stitches on needle. Work next row as follows from right side: 5 band stitches in garter stitch, A.3, 12-14-16-20-22-26 stitches in stocking stitch, 1 edge stitch in garter stitch. Continue this pattern until piece measures 47-49-51-53-55-57 cm (= 27-28-29-30-31-32 cm from where new stitches were cast on in each side). Switch to circular needle size 7 mm. Knit 1 row from right side while increasing 5-5-5-5-5-5 stitches evenly = 40-42-44-48-50-54 stitches. On next row (wrong side) work rib as follows: 1 edge stitch in garter stitch, * knit 1, purl 1 *, work from-* until 5 stitches remain, work 5 band stitches in garter stitch. Continue rib for 5 cm. Cast off with knit over knit and purl over purl - read CAST-OFF TIP. Piece measures 52-54-56-58-60-62 cm in total from shoulder. RIGHT FRONT PIECE: Cast on 14-15-16-16-16-17 stitches on circular needle size 8 mm with DROPS Snow. Work as follows from the side: 1 edge stitch in garter stitch, 6-7-8-10-10-11 stitches in stocking stitch, finish with A.4 (= 7-7-7-5-5-5 stitches). Work as follows, and increase as shown in diagram. When A.4 has been worked 1 time vertically, there are 29-30-31-33-33-34 stitches on needle. Continue as follows– from right side: 1 edge stitch in garter stitch, 6-7-8-10-10-11 stitches in stocking stitch, A.3 (= 17 stitches), 5 band stitches in garter stitch. Decrease for BUTTONHOLES - read explanation above. Continue this pattern like this until piece measures 14-14-14-13-13-13 cm. Now increase 1 stitch inside 1 edge stitch in the side - remember INCREASE TIP-1: Increase like this every other row 4-5-6-6-8-9 times in total. Work next row as follows from right side: 1 edge stitch in garter stitch, 12-14-16-20-22-26 stitches in stocking stitch, A.3, 5 band stitches in garter stitch. On next row (= from wrong side) work rib as follows: 5 band stitches in garter stitch, * purl 1, knit 1 *, repeat from-* until 1 stitch remains, 1 edge stitch in garter stitch. Continue rib for 5 cm. Cast off with knit over knit and purl over purl - read CAST-OFF TIP. Piece measures 52-54-56-58-60-62 cm in total from shoulder. SLEEVE: Cast on 30-32-34-36-38-40 stitches on double pointed needles size 7 mm with DROPS Snow. Work rib (= knit 1/purl 1) for 5 cm. Switch to double pointed needles size 8 mm. Insert 1 marker thread at beginning of round = mid under sleeve. Work in stocking stitch in the round. When piece measures 8 cm, increase 1 stitch on each side of marker thread - read INCREASE TIP-3! Increase like this every 9-8½-8-8-7½-7 cm 5 times in total = 40-42-44-46-48-50 stitches. When piece measures 47-45-44-43-42-38 cm, cast off 3 stitches on each side of marker thread (= 6 stitches decreased mid under sleeve), now work sleeve back and forth. NOTE: Shorter measurements in the larger sizes because of wider neck and longer sleeve cap. Cast off for sleeve cap at beginning of every row in each side as follows: Cast off 2 stitches 1-1-2-2-2-2 times and 1 stitch 1-1-2-2-3-3 times. Then cast off 2 stitches in each side until piece measures 53-52-52-52-52-49 cm in all sizes, cast off 3 stitches 1 time in each side, then cast off the remaining stitches. Sleeve measures approx. 54-53-53-53-53-50 cm from top and down. Work another sleeve the same way. ASSEMBLY: Sew shoulder seams inside cast-on edges. Because of the pattern there will be a neck line on back piece. Begin from the side, and sew 1 stitch from shoulder on front piece to 1 stitch from back piece, approx. 16-16-16-20-20-20 cm in the middle of back piece for neck. Sew side seams in outer loops of edge stitches. Sew in sleeves, inside 1 edge stitch in garter stitch. Sew the buttons on to left front piece. HIGH COLLAR: Pick up approx. 63 to 73 stitches on circular needle size 7 mm for neck (number of stitches should be divisible by 2 + 1). Work first row (= from wrong side) as follows: 5 band stitches in garter stitch, * purl 1, knit 1 *, repeat from *-* until 6 stitches remain, purl 1 and 5 band stitches in garter stitch. Work rib for 10 cm, or desired length. Cast off with knit over knit and purl over purl - remember CAST-OFF TIP. |
