Hej.

In relation to the following instruction for the medium front piece: "Cast off at the beginning of each row from the neck as follows: 2 stitches 2 times and 1 stitch 3 times = 8 stitches." a) are numbers correct and if so b) do we cast off1 time on right side and then purl normally (i.e. withour casrmting off) and then cast off another time and then purl without casting off and then 1 stitch 3 times from the right side only (while purling the wrong side without casting off)?

In relation to following instruction for the medium front piece: "Cast off the middle 8 stitches for the neck and finish each shoulder separately." : we cast off 8 stiches on the right side and then purl one shoulder and then follow the next instruction 'Cast off at the beginning of each row from the neck as follows: 2 stitches 2 times and 1 stitch 3 times = 8 stitches.' Are numbers of the latter instruction correct for the medium size?
09.02.2025 - 19:16DROPS Design answered:
Dear Kate, we cast off the middle 8 stitches and then work to the end of the row (so work over the 2nd shoulder as well). Then we start working each shoulder separately (so cut the thread and start on the correct side when needed). As we work the shoulders we continue casting off for the neck shaping still. You had 38 stitches in the front piece - 8 middle stitches = 30 stitches (that is, 15 stitches for each shoulder). In each shoulder cast off: 2+2+1+1+1 = 7 stitches. 15-7 stitches = 8 stitches remain in each shoulder. Happy knitting!

I have a question on the phrase for the back piece: 'Continue working until the piece measures 55cm. Loosely cast off with knit from the right side.' I have made mistake and did not continue knitting after casting off for the neck; moreover I casted off in a tight way (not loosely) and there is not space on shoulders. Any tips as to how to 'correct' the mistake? Thank you!

Hi Anna, Tedious maybe, but the best remedy is to undo the section that is wrong and re-knit it. Regards, Drops Team.

Mvh DROPS Design

Do you have a video explaining the following steps?: 'Then cast off 1 stitch on the next row from the neck = -8 stitches. Continue working until the piece measures 56 cm. Loosely cast off with knit from the right side. Work the other shoulder in the same way.'
02.02.2025 - 15:55DROPS Design answered:
Dear Kathryn, you cast off 1 stitch only, on a row starting from the side of the neck (so towards the mid front and not the side edge). Don't cast off anymore stitches and continue working the pattern as before until the piece measures 56 cm. Then you cast off with knit from the right side. On the other shoulder you work similarly: cast off 1 stitch on a row starting from the neck (since it's the mid-front it should mirror the other shoulder). Then continue working the pattern as before until the piece measures 56 cm and cast off with knit from the right side. Happy knitting!

You say in a previous answer that when you have cast off for the armholes, the rows begin and end with stocking stitch and not garter. Unfortunately I have done the edge stitches garter stitch for the back piece. Is this a problem? Shall I also do them garter in the front piece when casting off the armholes?
01.02.2025 - 23:40DROPS Design answered:
Dear Elodie, if you worked 1 edge stitch in garter stitch on each side towards armhole on back piece, then just work the same way on front piece. You will pick up stitches inside this edge stitch for armhole edge afterwards, so it's okay if this stitch is worked in garter stitch or in stocking stitch. Happy knitting!

For the back piece, for the casting off of the middle 20 stitches for the neck: do we cast off while on the right side (i.e. the 'knitting side'), a) just after we have finished the purling of the wrong side? Or b) just after we have knitted the right side, we knit again on the right side and cast off the middle 20 stitches? Thank you!
01.02.2025 - 06:45DROPS Design answered:
Dear Anna, you cast off on the right side of the piece, so the previous row should have been a wrong side row. Happy knitting!

I have 2 questions on the back piece paragraph: do' 2 edge stitches in GARTER STITCH' actually mean 2 knitted stitches on each side?– When it says 'Continue this rib for 6 cm' does it mean the rib 'p-k-p-n'? Or on the wrong side the rib becomes 'k-p-k-p'? Thank you in advance for your help.
26.01.2025 - 19:38DROPS Design answered:
Dear Anna, 1) Yes, the 2 edge stitches will always be knitted stitches, regardless of the rest of the pattern, unless otherwise stated. 2) When working a rib on the wrong side you purl over purl stitches and knit over knit stitches. You can see here an example on how to work a rib back and forth. Happy knitting!

------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- RIDGE/GARTER STITCH (worked back and forth): Knit all rows. 1 ridge = knit 2 rows. ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- VEST – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The front and back pieces are worked separately, back and forth. The sleeve edges and neck are worked in the round to finish. BACK PIECE: Cast on 69-73-77-85-93-103 stitches with circular needle size 7 mm and DROPS Wish or 2 strands DROPS Air. The first row is worked as follows from the right side: 2 edge stitches in GARTER STITCH – read description above, work rib (purl 1, knit 1) until there are 3 stitches left, purl 1 and 2 edge stitches in garter stitch. Continue this rib for 6 cm On the next row from the right side work as follows: 1 edge stitch in garter stitch, work stocking stitch and decrease 17-17-17-19-19-21 stitches evenly spaced over the next 67-71-75-83-91-101 stitches and 1 edge stitch in garter stitch = 52-56-60-66-74-82 stitches. Change to circular needle size 8 mm and continue with stocking stitch and 1 edge stitch in garter stitch on each side. REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION! When the piece measures 24-25-26-27-28-29 cm, cast off for the armholes at the beginning of every row on each side as follows: 3 stitches 1-1-1-1-1-2 times, 2 stitches 0-1-2-2-3-3 times and 1 stitch 5-4-3-5-6-5 times = 36-38-40-42-44-48 stitches. Continue with stocking stitch until the piece measures 51-53-55-57-59-61 cm. Cast off the middle 20-20-22-22-24-24 stitches for the neck and finish each shoulder separately. Then cast off 1 stitch on the next row from the neck = 7-8-8-9-9-11 stitches. Continue working until the piece measures 54-56-58-60-62-64 cm. Loosely cast off with knit from the right side. Work the other shoulder in the same way. FRONT PIECE: Cast on and work in the same way as the back piece until the piece measures 45-47-48-50-51-53 cm. Cast off the middle 8-8-8-10-10-10 stitches for the neck and finish each shoulder separately. Cast off at the beginning of each row from the neck as follows: 2 stitches 2 times and 1 stitch 3-3-4-3-4-4 times = 7-8-8-9-9-11 stitches. Continue working until the piece measures 54-56-58-60-62-64 cm. Loosely cast off with knit from the right side. Work the other shoulder in the same way. ASSEMBLY: Sew the shoulder seams. Sew the side seams in the outermost loop of the outermost ridge, so the seam is flat. Leave 6 cm at the bottom for the split. SLEEVE-EDGES: Use short circular needle size 7 mm. Start at the bottom of the armhole and knit up from the right side, inside 1 stitch, approx. 72-72-76-76-80-84 stitches around the armhole (the number of stitches should be divisible by 2). Work rib in the round (knit 1, purl 1) for 4 cm. Loosely cast off with knit over knit and purl over purl. Work the other sleeve-edge in the same way. NECK: Use short circular needle size 7 mm. Start at the top of one shoulder and knit up from the right side, inside 1 stitch, approx. 54-54-60-60-64-64 stitches around the neck (the number of stitches should be divisible by 2). Work rib in the round (knit 1, purl 1) for 6 cm. Loosely cast off with knit over knit and purl over purl. |
