------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- RIDGE/GARTER STITCH (worked back and forth): Knit all rows. 1 ridge in height = Knit 2 rows. PATTERN: See diagrams A.1 to A.6. Choose diagram for your size (applies to A.3, A.4 and A.5). CHANGING-STRAND TIP: To change Big Delight strands as neatly as possible, find a ball which starts with the same colour used at the end of the previous ball. INCREASE/DECREASE TIP (evenly spaced): To work out how to increase/decrease evenly, count the total number of stitches on needle (e.g. 84 stitches), minus the bands (e.g. 10 stitches) and divide the remaining stitches by the number of increases/decreases to be made (e.g. 2) = 37. In this example, increase by making 1 yarn over after each 37th stitch. On the next row work the yarn overs twisted to avoid holes. When decreasing, knit together each 36th and 37th stitch. Do not increase/decrease over the bands. DECREASE TIP (for sleeves): Decrease 1 stitch on each side of the marker thread as follows: Work until there are 3 stitches left before the marker thread, knit 2 together, knit 2 (marker thread sits between these 2 stitches), slip 1 stitch as if to knit, knit 1 and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch (2 stitches decreased). BUTTONHOLES: Work buttonholes on the right band (when the garment is worn). Work from the right side when there are 3 stitches left on the row as follows: Make 1 yarn over, knit 2 together and knit 1. On the next row (wrong side), knit the yarn over to leave a hole. The first buttonhole is worked when the rib on the neck measures 2½-3 cm. Then work the other 4-4-5-5-5-5 buttonholes with approx. 9½-10-8½-9-9½-9½ cm between each one. CASTING-OFF TIP: To avoid the cast-off edge being tight you can cast off with a larger size needle. If the edge is still tight, make 1 yarn over after approx. each 4th stitch at the same time as casting off; the yarn overs are cast off as normal stitches. ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- JACKET – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The neck and yoke are worked back and forth with circular needle from mid front and top down. The yoke is divided for body and sleeves and the body continued back and forth. The sleeves are worked in the round with short circular needle/double pointed needles, top down. Read CHANGING-STRAND TIP! NECK: Cast on 84-84-88-92-96-100 stitches with circular needle size 4.5 mm and Big Delight. Purl 1 row (= wrong side). The next row is worked as follows from the right side: 5 band stitches in GARTER STITCH – read description above, * knit 2, purl 2 *, work from *-* until there are 7 stitches left on the row, knit 2 and finish with 5 band stitches in garter stitch. Continue this rib for 3 cm – remember BUTTONHOLES on right band – read description above. When the rib is finished, knit 1 row from the right side where you increase 2-6-10-10-14-18 stitches evenly spaced – read INCREASE/DECREASE TIP = 86-90-98-102-110-118 stitches. Purl 1 row from the wrong side (yarn overs purled twisted and bands worked in garter stitch). Change to circular needle size 5.5 mm. Insert 1 marker after the band at the beginning of the row; the yoke is measured from this marker! YOKE: Work stocking stitch back and forth with 5 band stitches in garter stitch on each side. When the piece measures 3 cm from the marker, work pattern and increase as follows: INCREASE-1: Work 5 band stitches in garter stitch, work A.1 until there are 5 stitches left (= 19-20-22-23-25-27 repeats of 4 stitches), 5 band stitches in garter stitch. When A.1 has been completed there are 124-130-142-148-160-172 stitches on the needle. Knit 1 row from the right side where the number of stitches is adjusted to 125-130-145-150-160-175 stitches (i.e. in sizes S, L, XL, XXXL increase 1-3-2-3 stitches and in sizes M and XXL the number stays the same) – remember INCREASE/DECREASE TIP and remember THE KNITTING TENSION! Continue with stocking stitch and 5 band stitches in garter stitch on each side until the piece measures 7-8-9-9-9-10 cm. Now increase as follows: INCREASE-2: Work 5 band stitches in garter stitch, A.2 until there are 5 stitches left (= 23-24-27-28-30-33 repeats of 5 stitches), 5 band stitches in garter stitch. When A.2 has been completed there are 171-178-199-206-220-241 stitches. Knit 1 row from the right side where the number of stitches is adjusted to 170-180-200-208-220-244 stitches (i.e. in size S decrease 1 stitch, sizes M, L, XL and XXXL increase 2-1-2-3 stitches and size XXL the number stays the same). Continue with stocking stitch until the piece measures 11-13-15-15-15-17 cm. Now work the different sizes as follows: SIZES S, M and L: INCREASE-3: Work 5 band stitches in garter stitch, A.2 until there are 5 stitches left (= 32-34-38 repeats of 5 stitches), 5 band stitches in garter stitch. When A.2 has been completed there are 234-248-276 stitches. Continue with stocking stitch and band stitches until the piece measures 18-20-22 cm. Go to all sizes below. SIZES XL, XXL and XXXL: INCREASE-3: Work 5 band stitches in garter stitch, A.3 until there are 5 stitches left, (= 33-35-39 repeats of 6 stitches), 5 band stitches in garter stitch. When A.3 has been completed there are 274-290-322 stitches. Knit 1 row from the right side where the number of stitches is adjusted to 276-290-325 stitches (i.e. in sizes XL and XXXL increase 2-3 stitches, in size XXL the number remains the same). Continue with stocking stitch until the piece measures 21-21-24 cm. INCREASE-4: Work 5 band stitches in garter stitch, * 3-2-3 repeats of A.5, 1-1-1 repeat of A.4 *, work from *-* 9-13-11 times, then stocking stitch over the next 14-7-7 stitches, 5 band stitches in garter stitch = 294-316-347 stitches. Continue with stocking stitch until the piece measures 24-26-28 cm. Go to all sizes below. ALL SIZES: Now the yoke is divided for the body and sleeves, working the next row from the right side as follows: Work the first 37-39-43-46-49-54 stitches (= right front piece), place the next 48-50-57-59-64-70 stitches on a thread for the sleeve, cast on 6-8-8-8-8-10 new stitches on the needle (= in side under sleeve), work the next 64-70-76-84-90-99 stitches (= back piece), place the next 48-50-57-59-64-70 stitches on a thread for the sleeve, cast on 6-8-8-8-8-10 new stitches on the needle (= in side under sleeve), work the last 37-39-43-46-49-54 stitches (= left front piece). Body and sleeves are finished separately. THE PIECE IS NOW MEASURED FROM HERE. BODY: = 150-164-178-192-204-227 stitches. Continue back and forth with stocking stitch and 5 band stitches in garter stitch on each side. When the piece measures 18 cm in all sizes – adjust so the next row is from the right side, work as follows: Work the first 14-16-18-19-21-22 stitches as before, place the next 20 stitches on a thread for the pocket, cast on 20 new stitches, work the next 82-92-102-114-122-143 stitches, place the next 20 stitches on a thread for the pocket, cast on 20 new stitches and work the remaining 14-16-18-19-21-22 stitches = 150-164-178-192-204-227 stitches. Continue as before, but work A.6 over the 20 stitches cast on for the pockets. When A.6 has been completed, work stocking stitch over all stitches and the bands as before. When the piece measures 29 cm, increase 22-24-26-28-28-33 stitches evenly spaced = 172-188-204-220-232-260 stitches. Change to circular needle size 4.5 mm and work rib (= knit 2, purl 2) with 5 band stitches in garter stitch on each side as before. When the rib measures 3 cm, cast off with knit over knit and purl over purl – read CASTING-OFF TIP. The jacket measures approx. 54-56-58-60-62-64 cm from the shoulder down. POCKET (the second half): Place the 20 stitches from the thread back on circular needle size 5.5 mm and work stocking stitch back and forth until the pocket measures 10 cm. Cast off, making sure the cast-off edge is not tight. Sew the pocket to the inside of the jacket, with invisible stitches. Work the other pocket in the same way. SLEEVE: Place the 48-50-57-59-64-70 stitches from the thread on the one side of the piece on double pointed needles/short circular needle size 5.5 mm and knit up 1 stitch in each of the 6-8-8-8-8-10 stitches cast on under the sleeve = 54-58-65-67-72-80 stitches – remember CHANGING-STRAND TIP. Find the same colour on the ball as the colour you finished with on the yoke. Insert a marker thread in the middle of the cast-on stitches under the sleeve. Allow the thread to follow your work onwards; it will be used when decreasing under the sleeve. Start at the marker thread and work stocking stitch in the round over all stitches. When the sleeve measures 4 cm from the division, decrease 2 stitches under the sleeve – read DECREASE TIP. Decrease like this every 5½-4½-3-2½-2-1½ cm a total of 7-8-11-11-13-16 times = 40-42-43-45-46-48 stitches. Continue working until the sleeve measures 39-38-36-34-33-31 cm from the division (shorter measurements in larger sizes due to longer yoke). Knit 1 round where you increase 4-2-5-3-6-4 stitches evenly spaced = 44-44-48-48-52-52 stitches. Change to double pointed needles size 4.5 mm and work rib (knit 2, purl 2) for 6 cm. Cast off with knit over knit and purl over purl – remember CASTING-OFF TIP! The sleeve measures approx. 45-44-42-40-39-37 cm from the division. Work the other sleeve in the same way. ASSEMBLY: Sew the buttons onto the left band. |
