aka Lateral braid, aka Estonian Vikkel braid
Working a horizontal braid creates a line of horizontally-aligned knit stitches. You can do single or multicolored Vikkel braid. This video is showing a multicolored braid.

Start by casting on a new stitch before the first stitch.
*Knit with col 1 into the back of the 2nd stitch. Then knit with col 2 into the 1st stitch. Drop both stitches off the left needle. Slip the first stitch on right needle back onto the left needle, knit with col 2 into the back of the 2nd stitch. Then knit with col 1 into the 1st stitch. Drop both stitches off the left needle. Slip the first stitch on right needle back onto the left needle *. Repeat *-* until last st on row. K last st, and pass next to last st over.

This was excellent instruction, however I want to do a two coloured braid without having the newly introduced colour showing on the following row, which is what happens with this method.

Dear Beverley, do you mean working this braid with only one colour? then this video might be the right one. Happy knitting!

Hello, thank you for this video!- With your help, I managed to do the vikkel braid. But I have a question: the row after having done the vikkel braid, the stitches are much "longer2 than normal and when I knit them , they look like little holes. Is there anything I can do to prevent this?

DROPS Design 15.10.2014 - 14:10:

Dear Claudia, you can try to tighten the thread a bit more when working the vikkel braid. Happy knitting!
