yo (yarn over)

With a yarn over you can create a decorative hole.
In the video we show 2 times how you increase 1 stitch by making a yarn over (yo)
Halfway through the video we have turned the work and show you how to work the yo in front or back loop depending if you prefer a larger or smaller hole. When working the back loop the stitch becomes twisted and this way the hole becomes a bit smaller.

In Children 34-4 it asks for a YO between two stitches. This is an increase. The diagram says I must have 21 stitches not increase. Im Confused. I understand to knit the back of the stitch to close the hole but that leaves me with the increase each time.

Dear Cynthia, diagram A.2 is worked over 21 sts and you will make 8 yarn overs and decrease 4 sts 2 times: P2, K5 together, (yo, K1) x 7, yo, K5 tog, P2. Happy knitting!

Bonjour Mirelha, le jeté peut servir d'augmentation, il va se tricoter différemment en fonction du modèle (jersey, point mousse), dans le brin avant (= trou) ou le brin arrière (pour éviter un trou), tout va dépendre du modèle et du motif que vous tricotez. Bon tricot!

Bonjour Hélène, un jeté peut être fait pour de multiples raison, en côtes anglaises par exemple il "appartient" à la maille glissée et se retrouve au-dessus de cette maille glissée - cf vidéo des côtes anglaises avec jetés. Bon tricot!

When you are told to make a yarn over (yo) on the purl side of your work, you make the yo exactly as when done on the right side. In this DROPS Video we show how to do so. On the next row you can create a hole by working into the front loop of the yarn over. Then we show again how to make the yarn over on purl side, and then on next row we work into the back loop to show how the yo (increase) that way can become invisible, and not create a hole.

Here is a great almost invisible method to increase by knitting a new stitch in the loop from the stitch on previous row. You can do it after or before a stitch just as we show in the video. Right side: put your left needle through stitch 2 rows below the stitch on the right needle. Lift it up on your left needle and knit it in the back loop. Left side: put your right needle into the stitch under the first stitch on your left needle. Pick up the loop and put it on your left needle. Knit this new stitch in the front loop, and also knit following stitch separate as usual. This is also a great method when you need to inc two stitches right next to each other, without having to work a stitch between them. You can knit 1, make a inc in the st below, then make an inc in the st below next st, then knit that st.

A common and very easy method to increase 1 stitch – there will be a little hole. In our video we show twice how you make a loop on right needle with the working thread away from you. You can make the increased stitch lean in different directions. If you want the inc stitch to lean to the left you make a loop on right needle with the working thread towards you.
