How do I make sure the sock leg part retains some stretch in order to get the sock over the heel when knitting fair-isle patterns. The carried yarn seems to make stretching very difficult

Hi Nicky, It could be that the strands you are carrying at the back are too tight. You can try twisting the strands together at the back more frequently, so the carried yarn is longer, and make sure they are a little loose at the back, but not so loose as to be caught when putting the sock on! Happy knitting!

Wool is wonderful, pattern fun to make... but sizes are really too small. I am wearing a size 9 (40) and I had to cast on 80 st on 3mm needle

Dear Sandrine, remember to always check and keep your gauge, ie you should have here 26 sts x 34 rows in stocking st = 10 x 10 cm. Happy knitting!

INFORMATION FOR THE PATTERN: PATTERN: See diagrams A.1 to A.3. The diagrams are worked in stocking stitch apart from the colour marked purl. DECREASE/INCREASE TIP: To work out how to decrease/increase evenly, count the total number of stitches on the needle (e.g. 60 stitches) and divide by the number of decreases/increases to be made (e.g. 4) = 15. In this example, knit every 14th and 15th stitch together. When increasing make 1 yarn over after every 15th stitch in this example. On the next round, work the yarn overs twisted to avoid holes. KNITTING TIP (for heel): To strengthen the heel and heel decrease, work with 2 strands as follows: Use the strand from the inside and outside of the ball and work 1 stitch alternately with first the one strand then the other. In this way you get a slightly thicker heel without working with a double strand. HEEL DECREASE: ROW 1 (= right side): Knit until there are 7-8-8 stitches left, slip the next stitch as if to knit, knit 1, pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch, turn the piece. ROW 2 (= wrong side): Purl until there are 7-8-8 stitches left, slip the next stitch as if to purl, purl 1, lift the slipped stitch over the purled stitch, turn the piece. ROW 3 (= right side): Knit until there are 6-7-7 stitches left, slip the next stitch as if to knit, knit 1, lift the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch, turn the piece. ROW 4 (= wrong side): Purl until there are 6-7-7 stitches left, slip the next stitch as if to purl, purl 1, pass the slipped stitch over the purled stitch, turn the piece. Continue the decreases in the same way by working until there is 1 less stitch left before slipping a stitch and until there are 14-14-16 stitches left on heel. DECREASE TIP-2 (for toe): Decrease on each side of marker as follows: Start 3 stitches before the marker, knit 2 together, knit 2 (the marker sits in the middle of these 2 stitches), slip 1 stitch as if to knit, knit 1, pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch (= 2 stitches decreased). ---------------------------------------------------------- SOCK: The piece is worked in the round with double pointed needles, from the leg down to the toe. Cast on 60-64-68 stitches with double pointed needles size 2.5 mm and light grey. Work 2 rounds stocking stitch. Continue with rib (= knit 2 / purl 2) for 4 cm. Knit 1 round where you decrease 4-8-4 stitches evenly on round - read DECREASE/INCREASE TIP = 56-56-64 stitches. Work A.1 in the round (= 7-7-8 repeats of 8 stitches). On the round marked with an arrow in A.1 increase 4-4-0 stitches evenly on round = 60-60-64 stitches. When A.1 has been completed in height work diagram A.2 as follows: Work A.2a 0-0-1 time (= 2 stitches at back of sock), work A.2b (= 6-6-6 repeats of 10 stitches) and A.2a 0-0-1 time (= 2 stitches at back of sock). On the round marked with an arrow in A.2 decrease 4-4-0 stitches evenly on round = 56-56-64 stitches. When A.2 has been completed in height, work A.3 (= 7-7-8 repeats of 8 stitches). When A.3 has been completed in height, knit 1 round with grey where you adjust the number of stitches to 54-58-62 stitches. REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION! The sock is continued with grey and stocking stitch to finished length. Continue until the piece measures approx. 22-24-26 cm. Now keep the first 13-14-15 stitches on needle for heel, place the next 28-30-32 stitches on a thread (= top of foot) and keep the last 13-14-15 stitches on needle for heel. Read KNITTING TIP and work stocking stitch back and forth over the 26-28-30 heel stitches for 5-5½-6 cm. Insert 1 marker in the middle of the piece on the last row - THE PIECE IS NOW MEASURED FROM HERE! Continue by working HEEL DECREASE – see description above! When heel decrease is finished, knit up 13-14-16 stitches on each side of the heel and the 28-30-32 stitches from the thread are replaced on the needle = 68-72-80 stitches. Insert 1 marker on each side of the 28-30-32 stitches on top of foot. Decrease on each side of the 28-30-32 stitches on top of foot as follows: Knit together the last 2 stitches BEFORE the first marker on top of foot and knit 2 stitches twisted together AFTER the second marker on top of foot. Decrease in this way every 2nd round a total of 8-8-10 times = 52-56-60 stitches. Continue working until the piece measures approx. 18-19-21 cm from the marker on the heel (= 4-5-6 cm left to finished length). Insert 1 marker in each side of the foot so that there are 26-28-30 stitches both on top and underneath the foot. Now decrease to toe on each side of these two markers - read DECREASE TIP-2 (= 4 stitches decreased). Decrease in this way every 2nd round a total of 4-7-9 times and then every round a total of 6-3-2 times = 12-16-16 stitches left on needle. On the next round knit all stitches together 2 and 2 = 6-8-8 stitches left on needle. Cut the strand, pull it through the remaining stitches, tighten and fasten well. Work another sock in the same way. |
