Beautiful! I made this from my homespun wool and for a cardigan it's amazingly flattering! Love it.

------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- RIDGE/GARTER STITCH (worked back and forth): Knit all rows. 1 ridge in height = Knit 2 rows. PATTERN: See diagrams A.1 and A.2. Choose the diagram for your size. The diagrams show all rows in the pattern from the right side. INCREASE TIP (evenly spaced): To work out how to increase evenly, count the total number of stitches on the needle (e.g. 57 stitches) minus the bands (e.g. 8 stitches) and divide the remaining stitches by the number of increases to be made (e.g. 12) = 4.1. In this example, increase by making 1 yarn over after approx. each 4th stitch. Do not increase on bands. On the next row work the yarn overs twisted to avoid holes. DECREASE TIP (for sleeves): Decrease 1 stitch on either side of the marker thread as follows: Work until there are 3 stitches left before the marker thread, knit 2 together, knit 2 (marker thread sits between these 2 stitches), slip 1 stitch as if to knit, knit 1 and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch. BUTTONHOLES: Work buttonholes on the right band (when the garment is worn). Work from the right side when there are 3 stitches left on the row as follows: Make 1 yarn over, knit 2 together and knit 1. On the next row (wrong side), knit the yarn over to leave a hole. The first buttonhole is worked when the rib on the neck measures approx. 3½-4 cm. Then work the other 5-5-5-6-6-6 buttonholes with approx. 9-9½-10-8½-9-9½ cm between each one. CASTING-OFF TIP: To avoid the cast-off edge being tight you can cast off with a larger size needle. If the edge is still tight, make 1 yarn over after approx. each 4th stitch at the same time as casting off; the yarn overs are cast off as normal stitches. ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- JACKET – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The neck and yoke are worked back and forth with circular needle from mid front and top down. The yoke is divided for body and sleeves and the body continued back and forth. The sleeves are worked in the round with short circular needle/double pointed needles, top down. NECK: Cast on 57-59-61-65-67-69 stitches (including 4 band stitches on each side towards mid front) with circular needle size 7 mm and 1 strand Air and 1 strand Brushed Alpaca Silk (= 2 strands) or 1 strand Wish. Purl 1 row (= wrong side). The next row is worked as follows from the right side: 4 band stitches in GARTER STITCH – read description above, * knit 1, purl 1 *, work from *-* until there are 5 stitches left, knit 1 and 4 band stitches in garter stitch. Continue this rib for 4 cm – remember the BUTTONHOLES on the right band – read description above. When the rib is finished, knit 1 row from the right side where you increase 12-14-16-16-18-20 stitches evenly spaced – read INCREASE TIP = 69-73-77-81-85-89 stitches. Purl 1 row from the wrong side (yarn overs purled twisted and band stitches worked in garter stitch). Change to circular needle size 8 mm. Insert 1 marker after the band at the beginning of the row; the yoke is measured from this marker! YOKE: Now work pattern as follows (row 1 = right side): 4 band stitches in garter stitch, work A.1 until there are 5 stitches left, A.2 over the next stitch and 4 band stitches in garter stitch. REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION! Continue this pattern back and forth and increase on the rows with arrows as follows – remember INCREASE TIP: ARROW-1: Increase 24-28-32-32-28-32 stitches evenly spaced = 93-101-109-113-113-121 stitches. ARROW-2: Increase 24-28-32-28-28-32 stitches evenly spaced = 117-129-141-141-141-153 stitches. ARROW-3: Increase 22-26-30-24-28-32 stitches evenly spaced = 139-155-171-165-169-185 stitches. ARROW-4: Increase 24-24-24-20-28-28 stitches evenly spaced = 163-179-195-185-197-213 stitches. The increases in sizes S, M and L are finished. Sizes XL, XXL and XXXL increase 1 more time: ARROW-5: Increase 26-29-29 stitches evenly spaced = 211-226-242 stitches. When A.1 and A.2 have been completed in height, the piece measures approx. 21-21-21-26-26-26 cm from the marker. Continue with stocking stitch and band stitches in garter stitch until the piece measures 21-23-25-27-29-31 cm from the marker. Now divide the yoke for the body and sleeves on the next row as follows: Work the first 27-30-32-36-37-40 stitches (= front piece), place the next 31-34-38-40-43-45 stitches on 1 thread for the sleeve, cast on 6-6-6-8-8-8 stitches (= in side under the sleeve), work the next 47-51-55-59-66-72 stitches (= back piece), place the next 31-34-38-40-43-45 stitches on 1 thread for the sleeve, cast on 6-6-6-8-8-8 stitches (= in side under the sleeve), work the last 27-30-32-36-37-40 stitches (= front piece). Body and sleeves are finished separately. THE PIECE IS NOW MEASURED FROM HERE. BODY: = 113-123-131-147-156-168 stitches. Continue with stocking stitch and 4 band stitches in garter stitch on each side. When the piece measures 24 cm from the division, increase 16-18-18-20-23-25 stitches evenly spaced = 129-141-149-167-179-193 stitches. Change to circular needle size 7 mm. The next row is worked as follows from the right side: 4 band stitches in garter stitch, * knit 1, purl 1 *, work from *-* until there are 5 stitches left, knit 1 and work 4 band stitches in garter stitch. Continue this rib for 5 cm. Cast off with knit over knit and purl over purl – read CASTING-OFF TIP. The jacket measures approx. 54-56-58-60-62-64 cm from the shoulder down. SLEEVES: Place the 31-34-38-40-43-45 stitches from the thread on the one side of the piece on double pointed needles/short circular needle size 8 mm and knit up 1 stitch in each of the 6-6-6-8-8-8 stitches cast on under the sleeve = 37-40-44-48-51-53 stitches. Insert a marker thread in the middle of the new stitches under the sleeve. Allow the thread to follow your work onwards; it will be used when decreasing under the sleeve. Work stocking stitch in the round. When the sleeve measures 4 cm from the division, decrease 1 stitch on each side of the marker thread – read DECREASE TIP. Decrease like this every 0-13-4-2-1½-1 cm a total of 1-2-4-5-6-7 times = 35-36-36-38-39-39 stitches. When the sleeve measures 26-25-23-21-20-18 cm from the division – or to desired length (there is approx. 5 cm left to finished length), increase 5-6-6-6-5-5 stitches evenly spaced = 40-42-42-44-44-44 stitches. Change to double pointed needles size 7 mm and work rib (knit 1, purl 1) for 5 cm. Cast off with knit over knit and purl over purl – remember CASTING-OFF TIP. The sleeve measures approx. 31-30-28-26-25-23 cm. Work the other sleeve in the same way. ASSEMBLY: Sew the buttons onto the left band. |
