On the A4 diagram there are vertical lines placed after the black dot for a slipped stitch. What do these represent please

Dear Mrs Hatherall, these vertical lines are dividing the beg/end of rounds (= A.4) and the diagram you have to repeat over the described sts (= A.1, A.2 and A.3). Happy crocheting!

Thanks for your answer but it's still not clear. At the point I start A1a it's 1sc, ch3, 1dc, ch3 per repetition. If I continue A1a in height then I get to 6dc, which indeed gives 160 sts in total. I am just going to do my own thing with this pattern, the rest of the explanation is also not clear at all. Thank you.
27.11.2017 - 17:59DROPS Design answered:
Dear Germana, A.1a is worked over 6 dc, ie 1 repeat of A.1a is on row 1 (arrow): *1 sc, 3 ch, skip 2 dc, 1 dc in next st, 3 ch, skip 2 dc*, repeat from *-* a total of 3 times (until marker) = 3 repeats of A.1a, work 8 ch and skip sts between markers (= armhole), now work 12 times from *-* (= to next marker), 8 ch, skip sts between markers (= 2nd armhole), and repeat from *-* a total of 9 times and join in the round. You have divided sts for sleeve and get 8 ch under each sleeve. Continue now with row 2 in A.1a. Happy crocheting!
28.11.2017 - 08:51Germana wrote:
Hello, I'm working on size S. At then end of the yoke I have 240 stitches. I then work one row of A.1a as indicated leaving holes for the sleeves. That is 208 stitches. Why does in the explanation say that I should have 160? I would get to 160 if I would work A.1a in height as well. Basically, I would understand the explanations if the number of stitches (160) was given at the end of the first paragraph for the body. Looking forward to a clarification.
25.11.2017 - 23:25DROPS Design answered:
Dear Germana, at this place you will divide for sleeve at the same time, ie repeat A.1a 3 times in total in width until first marker, then work 8 ch, skip sts between the 2 markers (= sleeve), work A.1a 12 times in total in width until next marker (= front piece), work 8 ch, skip sts between the 2 markers (= sleeve), work A.1a 9 times in total in width (= 160 sts). So that A.1a is worked over 6 sts: (3x6) + 8 ch + (12x6) + 8 + (9x6) = 160 sts. Happy crocheting!
