------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- INCREASE TIP-1: INCREASE ONE STITCH TOWARDS THE LEFT from right side: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the previous row, pick up the strand from the front and knit through the back loop. INCREASE ONE STITCH TOWARDS THE RIGHT from right side: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the previous row, pick up the strand from the back and knit through the front loop. INCREASE TIP-2: INCREASE ONE STITCH TOWARDS THE LEFT, from wrong side: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the previous row, pick up the strand from the back and purl through the front loop. INCREASE ONE STITCH TOWARDS THE RIGHT, from wrong side: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the previous row, pick up the strand from the front and purl through the back loop. I-CORD: FIRST 2 STITCHES: Work like this on all rows: Slip 1 stitch purl-wise with the strand in front of the piece, knit 1. LAST 2 STITCHES: Work like this on all rows: Work until there are 2 stitches left on the row, slip 1 stitch purl-wise with the strand in front of the piece, knit 1. Work like this from both the right and the wrong side. GARTER STITCH: Knit all rows, from both the right and wrong side. 1 ridge in height = knit 2 rows. DECREASE TIP (for hat): Work until there are 4 stitches left before the marker, knit 2 together, knit 4 (marker thread sits in the middle of these 4 stitches) slip 1 stitch knit-wise, knit 1 and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch (2 stitches decreased). Decrease like this at each marker (= 6 stitches decreased on the round). ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- NECK-WARMER - SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The piece is started back and forth with circular needle and top down. Cast on stitches at the back of the neck and work the back piece while increasing stitches on each side for the shoulders which become slightly diagonal. The front piece is then worked in 2 sections, knitting up stitches along 1 back shoulder, working stocking stitch and increasing for the neckline. This is repeated on the other shoulder. The 2 front sections are joined when the neckline is finished and the front piece is continued downwards. Stitches are knitted up around the neckline and the neck is worked to finish. BACK PIECE: The piece is worked back and forth. Cast on 26-28 stitches with circular needle size 6 mm, 1 strand DROPS Melody and 1 strand DROPS Puna (2 strands). ROW 1 (wrong side): Purl. ROW 2 (right side): Read INCREASE TIP-1. Knit 2, increase 1 stitch towards the left, knit until there are 2 stitches left on the row, increase 1 stitch towards the right, knit 2. ROW 3 (wrong side): Read INCREASE TIP-2. Purl 2, increase 1 stitch towards the left, purl until there are 2 stitches left on the row, increase 1 stitch towards the right, purl 2. Work ROWS 2 and 3 a total of 6-6 times (12-12 rows worked) = 50-52 stitches. Insert 1 marker outermost on one side. The piece is now measured from here! Continue as follows: Work 2 stitches I-CORD – read explanation above, 1 GARTER STITCH – read explanation above, work stocking stitch until there are 3 stitches left, work 1 garter stitch and 2 stitches I-cord. Remember to maintain the knitting tension. Continue with stocking stitch, garter stitch and I-cord on each side until the piece measures 8-10 cm from the marker. Now decrease from the right side, inside the 3 edge-stitches on each side as follows: Work 2 stitches I-cord, 1 garter stitch, slip 1 stitch knit-wise, knit 1, pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch, work stocking stitch until there are 5 stitches left, knit 2 together, work 1 garter stitch and 2 stitches I-cord. Decrease like this every 7 cm a total of 2 times = 46-48 stitches. Continue working until the piece measures 21-24 cm from the marker. Change to circular needle size 5 mm and work the next row from the right side as follows: 2 stitches I-cord, rib (purl 1, knit 1) across the next 42-44 stitches and increase 5 stitches evenly across these stitches (i.e., the last stitch is purled), 2 stitches I-cord = 51-53 stitches. Work rib with I-cord on each side for 4 cm. Cast off with rib while knitting together the first and last 2 stitches on the row. Now work the left front shoulder along the left back shoulder. LEFT FRONT SHOULDER: Find the left back shoulder as follows: Lay the back piece flat, right side up, with the cast-off edge towards you; left side of piece = left shoulder. Start from the right side by the neck on the left back shoulder and knit up 1 stitch in each row worked inside the outermost stitch as far as the shoulder = 12-12 stitches. All length-measurements on the front piece are taken from this knitted-up row. Work the first row from the wrong side as follows: 2 stitches I-cord, 1 garter stitch, purl to end of row. From the right side: Knit until there are 3 stitches left, work 1 garter stitch and 2 stitches I-cord. When the piece measures 8 cm from the knitted-up row, increase for the neckline as follows: ROW 1 (right side): Remember INCREASE TIP-1. Knit 2, increase 1 stitch towards the left, work to end of row with stocking stitch, garter stitch and I-cord as before. ROW 2 (wrong side): Work stocking stitch, garter stitch and I-cord as before. Work ROWS 1 and 2 a total of 3-4 times (6-8 rows worked) = 15-16 stitches (with the last row from the wrong side). Cut the strand and place the stitches on a stitch holder/thread and work the right front shoulder along the right back shoulder. RIGHT FRONT SHOULDER: Start from the right side by shoulder on the right back piece and knit up 1 stitch in each row worked as far as the neck, inside the outermost stitch = 12-12 stitches. All length-measurements on the front piece are taken from this knitted-up row. Work the first row from the wrong side as follows: Purl until there are 3 stitches left, work 1 garter stitch and 2 stitches I-cord. From the right side: Work 2 stitches I-cord, 1 garter stitch, knit to end of row. When the piece measures 8 cm from the knitted-up row, increase for the neckline as follows: ROW 1 (right side): Work I-cord, garter stitch and stocking stitch until there are 2 stitches left, increase 1 stitch towards the right, knit 2 – remember INCREASE TIP-1. ROW 2 (wrong side): Work stocking stitch, garter stitch and I-cord as before. Work ROWS 1 and 2 a total of 3-4 times (6-8 rows worked) = 15-16 stitches (with the last row from the wrong side). Now join the 2 shoulders for the front piece. FRONT PIECE: The first row is from the right side: Work the 15-16 stitches on the right front shoulder as before, cast on 20-20 stitches for the neckline, work the 15-16 stitches from the left front shoulder as before = 50-52 stitches. Continue back and forth with stocking stitch, garter stitch and I-cord on each side until the piece measures 17-19 cm from the knitted-up row. Continue working until the piece measures 31-33 cm, from the knitted-up row. Work the next row from the right side as follows: 2 stitches I-cord, rib (purl 1, knit 1) across the next 42-44 stitches and increase 5 stitches evenly across these stitches, 2 stitches I-cord = 51-53 stitches. Work rib with I-cord on each side for 4 cm. Cast off with rib, while knitting together the first and last 2 stitches on the row. NECK: Use circular needle size 5 mm. Start from the right side on one shoulder-line and knit up 82-92 stitches inside 1 stitch around the neckline. The stitch count must be divisible by 2. Work rib (knit 1, purl 1) in the round for 12-13 cm. Cast off with rib. ------------------------------------------------------- HAT – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The piece is worked in the round, bottom up. Change to double pointed needles when necessary as you decrease. HAT: Cast on 72-76 stitches with circular needle size 5 mm, 1 strand DROPS Melody and 1 strand DROPS Puna (2 strands). You can use Italian cast-on if you wish. Work rib in the round (knit 1, purl 1) for 10-11 cm. Change to circular needle size 6 mm. Knit 1 round and decrease 6-7 stitches evenly on the round = 66-69 stitches. Continue with stocking stitch until the piece measures 22-24 cm (9-9 cm left to finished length). Remember to maintain the knitting tension. Begin decreasing for the top of the hat. Insert 3 markers with 22-23 stitches between each marker. Read DECREASE TIP and decrease as described every 2nd round 8 times = 18-21 stitches. Knit 0-1, knit all stitches together 2 and 2 = 9-11 stitches. Cut the strand, pull it through the remaining stitches, tighten and fasten well. The hat measures approx. 31-33 cm from the cast-on edge. Fold up the bottom 7-8 cm. The hat now measures approx. 24-25 cm. |
