How to work an European shoulder. Part 1 – Back piece

Keywords: edge, european shoulder, jacket, jumper, vest,

In this DROPS Video, Part 1 of 3 videos, we show how to work an European shoulder on the back piece. We have already cast on 17 stitches, purled 1 row from WS and insert 1 marker on the inside of the 3 outermost stitches in each side. Then we show how to increase after written description in the pattern how to get the stitches to turn towards the right or towards the left.

We show 2 rows from the RS and 2 rows from the WS with increases. Then we work back and forth without increases. Put the stitches on a thread or a stitch holder when you got the right measurement, cut the thread.

See Video Part 2 on how to pick-up stitches in the shoulder seam to the front pieces.
You must read a pattern to get the correct numbers of stitches, increases and rows. You’ll find patterns with this technique is used by clicking on one of the pictures below. We use the yarn DROPS Snow in the video.

The video above can be used in the following patterns

Do your teaching Utube instruction videos not have audio? I've tried to play on a number of devices and no sound. Thank you

DROPS Design answered:

Dear Lynn, Our videos do not have sound. We are a worldwide company and our videos are watched by people around the world, speaking different languages, many of whom do not understand English. We have therefore written instructions to accompany this video, and there is no sound to disturb while watching. Enjoy!

The videos for the diagonal shoulders is quite clear but it doesn’t mention anything about placing stitches on a thread. On the Over Dover vest pattern it says place 6 (M) stitches from the side 2 times on a thread. Does this mean 12 stitches in total for one side? Then it says place 8 stitches on a thread. Are these separate threads? Does this mean one side has more stitches than the other? Thanks for any help you can provide ….maybe I’m reading the pattern wrong?

DROPS Design answered:

Dear Mrs Vaughan, this video will not apply to the diagonal shoulder on this pattern where you have to work short rows: slip on a thread at the beginning of every row from armhole 6 sts 2 times then the 8 last stitches, so that you will have a total of 20 sts for the shoulder - at the same time, you will cast off the middle 26 sts for neck (then continue each shoulder separately) + 1 stitch for neck at the beg of row from neck, this means: (6+6+8) for shoulder + (1+26+1) for neck + (8+6+6) for shoulder = 68 sts in total (size M). Happy knitting!
