Dear Mrs Braid, it looks like you have to work 1 row with decrease, 1 row without decrease (= you decrease on every other row), first time decrease (or casting off?) 3 sts then next time decrease 1 stitch; It might be a good idea to ask your question under the pattern you are working on, so that we could check that pattern and give you a more relevant answer. Dear Monika, slip 1 st onto a st holder behind work, slip next st as if to K, work then next st on left needle tog with st from st holder, and pass the slipped st over the worked sts. Happy knitting!

This dec with the abbreviations in title means that you decrease 1 stitch by first slipping a stitch, then knitting a stitch, then passing the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch. When you decrease in purled stitches, you purl 2 sts together into 1 stitch. In our video we first show how to do this the continental style, and then US style.

Probably the easiest way to decrease 1 stitch - knit 2 stitches together as one. In the video we first knit 2 stitches together in the front loops, the dec leans right. Then we knit 2 stitches twisted together, i.e. we knit them together in the back loops and the dec leans to the left.

Sometimes you want to make a piece smaller and this is made by knitting stitches together – it’s called to decrease (dec). Most commonly the decreases are made on rows from right side (RS), but sometimes it’s also necessary to decrease on wrong side rows, e.g. when you are to decrease on every row. How to turn 1 strand into 3 from the same ball of yarn

In this DROPS video we how to make 3 strands out of 1 single strand from a ball of yarn. 1. Make a simple loop (like the loop worked when you begin any crochet project) and pull it to approx. 2-3 cm = ¾"-1⅛" in length. 2. Thread the strand from the skein through this loop, creating a new loop of approx. 40-50 cm = 15¾"-19¾". 3. Lay this loop alongside the working strand, so 1 strand becomes 3 strands. 4. Knit or crochet using these 3 strands until there is approx. 2 cm = ¾" left. Repeat points 2 to 4.
