COLOR ALTERNATIVE: The ball is also pretty if you work it with opposite color combination.
PATTERN: See diagram A-1. The entire pattern is worked in stockinette st in the round on double pointed needles.
Inc 1 st by picking up the strand between 2 sts from previous row - K this st twisted, i.e. work in back loop of st instead of front to avoid a hole.
Inc 1 st on each side of st with marker
(off white) as follows: Work until 1 st remains before this st, inc 1 st with off white, work the next 3 sts (st with marker is in the middle of these), inc 1 st with off white.

Dec 1 st on each side of st with marker (off white) as follows: Work until 2 sts remain before this st, work the next 2 sts tog with dark mustard, work 1 st (with marker) with off white, slip 1 st as if to K, work next st with dark mustard, psso.

Work the ball in the round in stockinette st on double pointed needles, bottom up. Cast on 6 sts with off white and distribute them evenly on 3 double pointed needles size 2.5 mm / US 1 or 2 (also see COLOR ALTERNATIVE); 2 sts on every needle. Work 1 round. On next round, inc by working 2 sts in every st (= 4 sts on every needle). Then work diagram A-1 3 times per round. When 1st round in A-1 has been worked, insert a marker in the last st on every needle (off white), move the marker upwards when working. Then inc 1 st with off white on each side of st with marker - Read INCREASE TIP above. Then dec 1 st with dark mustard on each side of st with marker - Read DECREASE TIP. When A-1 has been worked (= 4 sts remain on every needle), fill the ball with some poly stuffing. Finish with 1 round off white.
Cut the yarn, leave approx. 50 cm / 20'' - this is used to crochet the strap. Use a darning needle and sew the yarn through the remaining sts and tighten tog.
Insert hook size 3 mm / C through the top and ch 1, continue with ch until ch-row measures approx. 16 cm / 6''. Finish with 1 sl st at the top of ball. Fasten off.
Embroider the beak with duplicate sts in orange.

= dark mustard
= off white
