Hat:
Tension: 10 sts x 14 rows on 9 mm needles in stocking sts = 10x10cm
Garter sts: 1st row: Knit, 2nd row: Knit
Increasing: Inc within 2 sts either side as follows: Yo, on next row (= right side), knit yo into back of st in order not to create a hole.

Knit ear flaps and the first 4 rows on hat in double thread, knit the rest in single thread. Left earflap: Cast on 3 sts on needle 9 mm with 2 threads Eskimo and knit 2 rows garter sts (1st row = right side), whilst increasing 1 st within 1 edge st each side on 2nd row. Continue in stocking sts with 2 edge sts each side in garter sts, at the same time inc. 1 st each side on every other row a total of 4 times – see Increasing above = 13 sts. After the last inc., cast on 4 new sts towards mid back = 17 sts. Knit 1 row over all sts from the right side, and inc. 1 st when there’s 1 st left on needle (towards mid front) = 18 sts. On next row (wrong side), knit the first 3 sts, purl the next 9 sts and knit the last 6 sts. Leave piece and knit right earflap: knit as left but mirrored, i.e. on last but one row, inc. 1 st towards mid front and cast on 4 new sts towards mid back.
Hat: Put earflaps on same needle (start mid back) and cast on 14 sts between them at front = 50 sts. Knit 4 rows garter sts. Now continue in stocking sts and only 1 thread until finished measurements. When piece measures 11 cm (measured mid front), knit next row as follows from the right side: *K2 tog, K8*, repeat from *-*. Purl 1 row from wrong side. Knit next row as follows: *K2 tog, K7*, repeat from *-*. Repeat the dec’s on every other row with 1 less sts between the dec’s each time until there are 20 sts left on needle. Hat measures approx 19 cm from mid front. Cut thread and pull through remaining sts. Sew together hat mid back in the outer part of sts.
