I would like to make this pattern in yarn group e, snow. What size needles do I use?
07.10.2024 - 00:15DROPS Design answered:
Dear Mrs Dailey, Snow might not be the right alternative here to get the right tension (13 sts is rather for a yarn group D as Melody); please find all our jumpers for Snow/yarn group E here, please add filters if needed. Happy knitting!

------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- GARTER STITCH (worked back and forth): Knit all rows. 1 ridge = knit 2 rows. PATTERN: See diagrams A.1 and A.2. The diagrams show all rows in the pattern from the right side. INCREASE TIP-1 (from right side): Increase 1 stitch towards the left: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the previous row, pick up strand from the front and knit the back loop. Increase 1 stitch towards the right: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the previous row, pick up strand from behind and knit the front loop. INCREASE TIP-2 (from wrong side): Increase 1 stitch towards the left: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the previous row, pick up strand from behind and purl the front loop. Increase 1 stitch towards the right: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the previous row, pick up strand from the front and purl the back loop. DECREASE TIP (for sleeves): Decrease 1 stitch on each side of the marker-thread as follows: Work until there are 3 stitches left before the marker-thread, knit 2 together, knit 2 (marker-thread sits between these 2 stitches), slip 1 stitch knit-wise, knit 1 and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch. I-CORD CAST OFF: ROW 1 (right side): Knit 2, knit 2 twisted together. ROW 2 (right side): Slip the 3 stitches on the right needle onto the left needle, knit 2, knit 2 twisted together. Repeat ROW 2 until there are 3 stitches left on the right needle. Slip these 3 stitches onto the left needle. Cast off. Sew a small stitch, joining the beginning/end of the I-cord to the garment. ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- JUMPER – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The pattern uses both long and short circular needles; start with the length which fits the number of stitches and change when necessary. Start by casting on stitches for the back of the neck then work the back piece top down, increasing on each side for the shoulders which are slightly diagonal. Work as far as the armholes. The back piece then waits while the front piece is worked, starting the 2 shoulders separately. Knit up stitches along each shoulder, working and increasing for the neckline, then the front pieces are joined and continued back and forth as far as the armholes. The front and back pieces are joined and the body continued in the round with circular needle before dividing for the split in each side. Stitches are knitted up around each armhole. The sleeve cap is worked back and forth with short rows, then the sleeve is continued in the round. The neck is worked to finish with I-cord. BACK PIECE: Cast on 24-24-26-28-28-30 stitches with circular needle size 7 mm and 1 strand of each quality (2 strands). Purl 1 row from the wrong side. Read INCREASE TIP and work as follows from the right side: Knit 3, increase towards the left, knit until there are 3 stitches left, increase towards the right, knit 3. Read INCREASE TIP-2 and work as follows from the wrong side: Purl 3, increase towards the left, purl until there are 3 stitches left, increase towards the right, purl 3. Continue increasing as described on every row (both right and wrong side) a total of 18-20-20-22-24-26 times. After the last increase there are 60-64-66-72-76-82 stitches. Insert 1 marker outermost on one side. The piece is now measured from here! Work stocking stitch back and forth until the piece measures 11-12-12-13-12-13 cm, from the marker and along the armhole. REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION! Work as follows from the right side: Knit 3, increase towards the left, knit until there are 3 stitches left, increase towards the right, knit 3 – remember INCREASE TIP-1. Increase like this each row from the right side a total of 2-2-3-3-4-4 times = 64-68-72-78-84-90 stitches. Continue working until the piece measures 14-15-16-17-17-18 cm, measured along the armhole and finishing after a row from the right side. Cut the strand, place the stitches on a stitch holder and work the front piece. FRONT PIECE: Knit up 18-20-20-22-24-26 stitches along the right back shoulder (when the garment is worn), inside the outermost stitch along the top of the shoulder (i.e., knit up 1 stitch in each row, see E in sketch). All measurements are taken from here! Purl 1 row from the wrong side, then work as follows from the right side: Stocking stitch until there are 4 stitches left, work A.1. Continue this pattern. When the piece measures 6 cm, increase towards the right (for the neck) at the end of each row from the right side, increasing before A.1 - remember INCREASE TIP-1. Increase 1 stitch every 2nd row (each row from the right side) a total of 12-12-13-14-14-15 times = 30-32-33-36-38-41 stitches. Finish after a row from the right side, place the stitches on a stitch holder and work the left front shoulder. Knit up 18-20-20-22-24-26 stitches along the left back shoulder (when the garment is worn), inside the outermost stitch along the top of the shoulder (i.e., knit up 1 stitch in each row, see D in sketch). All measurements are taken from here! Purl 1 row from the wrong side, then work as follows from the right side: A.2, stocking stitch to end of row. Continue this pattern. When the piece measures 6 cm, increase towards the left (for the neck) at the beginning of each row from the right side, increasing after 4 stitches - remember INCREASE TIP-1. Increase 1 stitch every 2nd row (each row from the right side) a total of 12-12-13-14-14-15 times = 30-32-33-36-38-41 stitches. Finish after a row from the right side. Now join the shoulders together, working from the wrong side as follows: Stocking stitch over the 30-32-33-36-38-41 left shoulder stitches, place the right shoulder stitches on the left needle, then work them in stocking stitch = 60-64-66-72-76-82 stitches. Work as follows from the right side: Knit 28-30-31-34-36-39, place the next 2 stitches on a cable needle in front of the piece, knit 2, knit 2 from cable needle, knit the last 28-30-31-34-36-39 stitches. Continue with stocking stitch until the piece measures 22-23-22-23-24-25 cm. Now work as follows from the right side: Knit 3, increase towards the left, knit until there are 3 stitches left, increase towards the right, knit 3. Increase like this on each row from the right side 2-2-3-3-4-4 times = 64-68-72-78-84-90 stitches. Continue working until the piece measures 24-25-26-27-29-30 cm. Join the front and back pieces for the body. BODY: Work stocking stitch over the 64-68-72-78-84-90 front-piece stitches, cast on 4-4-6-6-8-10 stitches (in side under sleeve), stocking stitch over the 64-68-72-78-84-90 back-piece stitches, cast on 4-4-6-6-8-10 stitches (in side under sleeve) = 136-144-156-168-184-200 stitches. Continue working stocking stitch in the round until the piece measures 48-50-52-54-56-58 cm, from the top front shoulder. Now work a split in each side. Place the 68-72-78-84-92-100 back piece stitches on a stitch holder. FRONT PIECE: Knit 1 row and increase 20-20-22-24-24-28 stitches evenly spaced = 88-92-100-108-116-128 stitches. Change to circular needle size 5.5 mm and work as follows from the wrong side: 1 edge stitch in GARTER STITCH – read description above, * purl 2, knit 2 * work from *-* until there are 3 stitches left, purl 2 and 1 edge stitch in garter stitch. Continue this rib back and forth for 8 cm. Cast off. The jumper measures approx. 56-58-60-62-64-66 cm from the top of the shoulder. BACK PIECE: Place the stitches on circular needle size 7 mm and work in the same way as the front piece. SLEEVES: Lay the piece flat and insert 1 marker at the top of the armhole (NOTE! This is not where stitches were knitted up but approx. 5-6 cm down the front piece = mid-top of shoulder). All measurements are taken from here. Using circular needle size 7 mm and 1 strand of each quality. Start in the middle of the cast-on stitches under the sleeve, knit up 54-56-60-64-68-72 stitches around the armhole – making sure you have equal numbers of stitches on each side of the marker. Work stocking stitch back and forth as follows, with short rows for the sleeve cap (to give the sleeve a better fit). Start mid-under the sleeve. Row 1 (right side): work to 7-7-7-8-8-9 stitches past the marker, turn. Row 2 (wrong side): work 7-7-7-8-8-9 -11 stitches past the marker, turn. Row 3 (right side): work to 6-6-4-5-4-4 stitches past the previous turn, turn. Row 4 (wrong side): work to 6-6-4-5-4-4 5 stitches past the previous turn, turn. Repeat rows 3 and 4 until you work 25-25-23-28-28-29 stitches past the marker (4-4-5-5-6-6 turns on each side). Work from the right side to the beginning of the row (mid-under sleeve). Insert 1 marker-thread here, which is used when decreasing under the sleeve. Allow the thread to follow your work onwards. Continue with stocking stitch in the round over all stitches. When the sleeve measures 7-7-8-8-10-10 cm, from the knitted-up stitches (all lengths measured mid-top of sleeve), decrease 2 stitches under the sleeve – read DECREASE TIP. Decrease like this every 2nd round 2-2-3-3-4-4 times, then every 5-5-4-3½-3-3 cm, 5-5-5-6-6-6 times (a total of 7-7-8-9-10-10 times) = 40-42-44-46-48-52 stitches. Work until the sleeve measures 44-43-43-42-42-40 cm. There is 8 cm left. Try the jumper on and work to desired length before the rib. Knit 1 round and increase 8-6-8-6-8-8 stitches evenly spaced = 48-48-52-52-56-60 stitches. Change to double pointed needles size 5.5 mm. Work rib (knit 2, purl 2) for 8 cm. Cast off a little loosely. The sleeve measures approx. 52-51-51-50-50-48 cm. BACK OF NECK: Use circular needle size 7 mm and 1 strand of each quality, cast on 2 stitches then, starting on one shoulder-line, knit up from the right side 22-22-24-26-26-28 stitches, to the other shoulder-line, inside 1 stitch. Cut the strand. Starting with the 2 cast-on stitches, cast off with I-CORD – read description above. |
