------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- KNITTING TIP: When working short rows, there will be a small hole after each turn. This hole can be closed by using the technique German Short Rows as follows: Slip the first stitch purl-wise with the strand in front, take the strand over the right needle and tighten well from the back (2 loops on the needle). These loops are worked together on the next row. GARTER STITCH: Knit all rows, from both the right and wrong side. 1 ridge in height = knit 2 rows. INCREASE TIP: All increases are worked from the right side. INCREASE 1 STITCH TOWARDS LEFT: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the row below, pick up the strand from the front and knit through the stitch-loop that lies on the back of the needle. INCREASE 1 STITCH TOWARDS THE RIGHT: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the row below, pick up the strand from the back and knit through the stitch-loop that lies on the front of the needle. BUTTONHOLES: Work 4 buttonholes on the right band. 1 buttonhole = work 2 together, make 1 yarn over. NOTE: It is neatest if the buttonholes are worked by purling 2 together in a section of 2 purled stitches (from the right side). On the next row knit the yarn over to leave a hole. The top buttonhole is positioned where the increases for the V-neck finish, the bottom buttonhole in the transition between the body and the rib. The last 2 buttonholes are positioned evenly between these 2. DECREASE TIP (mid under sleeve): Decrease 1 stitch on each side of the marker-thread as follows: Work until there are 3 stitches left before the marker-thread, knit 2 together, knit 2 (marker-thread sits between these 2 stitches), slip 1 stitch knit-wise, knit 1 and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch (2 stitches decreased). ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- JACKET – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE. The pattern uses both long and short needles; start with the length which fits the number of stitches and change when necessary. The piece is started by casting on stitches at the back of the neck casting on stitches across the full width of the shoulders. Then back piece is worked top down at the same time as short rows are worked for the diagonal shoulders. Work as far as the armholes then slip back piece aside and work front pieces. Each front piece is worked by knitting up stitches along 1 back shoulder, working downwards and increasing AT THE SAME TIME for the neckline and armholes, then working to the bottom of the armholes. The front and back pieces are joined on the same circular needle and the body is continued back and forth. Stitches are knitted up around the armholes for the sleeves, which are started back and forth for the sleeve cap, then finished in the round. Stitches are knitted up around the jacket opening and the bands and neck are worked back and forth. BACK PIECE: Cast on 76-82-88-90-96-100-110 stitches with circular needle size 5 mm and DROPS Nepal or DROPS Alaska. Cut the strand. Begin working from the right side, 24-26-28-28-30-32-36 stitches in (i.e., move these stitches onto the right needle without working them) and work stocking stitch back and forth across more and more stitches as follows – read KNITTING TIP, working German short rows so there are no holes: Knit 28-30-32-34-36-36-38 (i.e., the middle 28-30-32-34-36-36-38 stitches on the row; there are 24-26-28-28-30-32-36 stitches left - remember KNITTING TIP, turn and purl 30-32-34-36-38-38-40. Turn and knit 32-34-36-38-40-40-42. Continue like this, working 2 more stitches each time you turn and continuing until all stitches on the row have been worked. Insert 1 marker outermost on one side; the piece is now measured from here. Continue stocking stitch across all stitches until the piece measures 13-13-14-14-13-13-14 cm from the marker and down the armhole. Now increase for the armholes. INCREASE FOR ARMHOLES: ROW 1 (right side): Read INCREASE TIP. Knit 3, increase 1 stitch towards the left, knit until there are 3 stitches left on the row, increase 1 stitch towards the right, knit 3. ROW 2 (wrong side): Purl. Work ROWS 1 and 2 a total of 1-1-1-2-3-4-4 times (2-2-2-4-6-8-8 rows worked) = 78-84-90-94-102-108-118 stitches. Continue working until the piece measures 14-14-15-16-16-17-18 cm, from the marker and down the armhole, finishing after a row from the right side. Cut the strand and place the stitches on a stitch holder. Now work the left front piece along the left back shoulder. LEFT FRONT PIECE: Find the left back shoulder as follows: Lay the back piece flat, right side up, with the stitch holder/thread towards you; left side of piece = left shoulder. Start from the right side by the neck on the left back shoulder and knit up stitches to the armhole as follows: ROW 1 (right side): Knit up stitches along the edge where the short rows were worked, knitting up inside the cast-on edge so the join is neat = 25-27-29-29-31-33-37 stitches. All measurements on the front piece are taken from this knitted-up row. Knit 1 row from the wrong side. Work stocking stitch back and forth with 1 edge stitch in GARTER STITCH mid-front – read explanation above, for 6-6-7-7-7-7-7 cm. OVERVIEW OF NEXT SECTION: Now begin increasing for the V-neck, then later you also increase for the armhole (the armhole increases begin before the neckline increases are finished). Read the next 2 sections before continuing so you know when to begin the armhole increases. INCREASE FOR V-NECK: ROW 1 (right side): Work 1 edge-stitch, knit 2, increase 1 stitch towards the left - remember INCREASE TIP, knit to end of row. ROW 2 (wrong side): Purl until there is 1 stitches left, work 1 edge stitch. Work ROWS 1 and 2 a total of 9-10-11-12-13-13-14 times (18-20-22-24-26-26-28 rows worked). Now increase as follows: ROW 1 (right side): Work 1 edge stitch, knit to end of row. ROW 2 (wrong side): Purl until there is 1 stitches left, work 1 edge-stitch. ROW 3 (right side): Work 1 edge-stitch, knit 2, increase 1 stitch towards the left, knit to end of row. ROW 4 (wrong side): Purl until there is 1 stitches left, work 1 edge-stitch. Work ROWS 1 to 4 a total of 5 times (20 rows worked): a total of 14-15-16-17-18-18-19 increases in height for the V-neck. Continue stocking stitch and the edge-stitch. INCREASE FOR ARMHOLE: AT THE SAME TIME when the piece measures 23-23-25-24-24-25-26 cm, increase for the armhole (the increases for the V-neck are not yet finished): ROW 1 (right side): Work 1 edge-stitch, knit until there are 3 stitches left, increase 1 stitch towards the right - remember INCREASE TIP, knit 3. ROW 2 (wrong side): Purl until there is 1 stitches left, work 1 edge-stitch. Work ROWS 1 and 2 a total of 1-1-1-2-3-4-4 times (2-2-2-4-6-8-8 rows worked). When all the increases for both the V-neck and armhole are finished, there are 40-43-46-48-52-55-61 stitches. Continue working until the piece measures 24-24-25-26-28-29-30 cm, from the knitted-up row, finishing with a row from the right side. Cut the strand and place the stitches on a stitch holder. Now work the right front piece along the right back shoulder. RIGHT FRONT PIECE: Start from the right side by the armhole on the right back shoulder and knit up stitches to the neck as follows: ROW 1 (right side): Knit up stitches along the edge where the short rows were worked, knitting up inside the cast-on edge so the join is neat = 25-27-29-29-31-33-37 stitches. All measurements on the front piece are taken from this knitted-up row. Knit 1 row from the wrong side. Work stocking stitch back and forth with 1 edge stitch in garter stitch mid-front for 6-6-7-7-7-7-7 cm. OVERVIEW OF NEXT SECTION: Now begin increasing for the V-neck, then after a while you also increase for the armhole (the armhole increases begin before the neckline increases are finished). Read the next 2 sections before continuing so you know when to begin the armhole increases. INCREASE FOR V-NECK: ROW 1 (right side): Knit until there are 3 stitches left, increase 1 stitch towards the right - remember INCREASE TIP, knit 2 and work 1 edge-stitch. ROW 2 (wrong side): Work 1 edge-stitch, purl to end of row. Work ROWS 1 and 2 a total of 9-10-11-12-13-13-14 times (18-20-22-24-26-26-28 rows worked). Then increase as follows: ROW 1 (right side): Knit until there is 1 stitches left, work 1 edge-stitch. ROW 2 (wrong side): Work 1 edge-stitch, purl to end of row. ROW 3 (right side): Knit until there are 3 stitches left, increase 1 stitch towards the right, knit 2 and work 1 edge-stitch. ROW 4 (wrong side): Work 1 edge-stitch, purl to end of row. Work ROWS 1 to 4 a total of 5 times (20 rows worked): a total of 15-16-17-18-18-19 increases in height for the V-neck. INCREASE FOR ARMHOLE: AT THE SAME TIME when the piece measures 23-23-25-24-24-25-26 cm, increase for the armhole (the increases for the V-neck are not yet finished): ROW 1 (right side): Knit 3, increase 1 stitch towards the left, knit until there is 1 stitch left, work 1 edge-stitch. ROW 2 (wrong side): Work 1 edge-stitch, purl to end of row. Do not cut the strand; the pieces are now joined together for the body. BODY: From the wrong side: Work the 40-43-46-48-52-55-61 stitches on the right front piece, cast on 4-4-6-8-8-12-12 stitches (mid-under the sleeve), work the 78-84-90-94-102-108-118 stitches on the back piece, cast on 4-4-6-8-8-12-12 stitches (mid-under the sleeve), work the 40-43-46-48-52-55-61 stitches on the left front piece = 166-178-194-206-222-242-264 stitches. Continue back and forth with stocking stitch and 1 edge-stitch on each side until the piece measures 51-53-55-57-59-61-63 cm from the cast-on edge mid-back. On the next row from the right side begin the rib, AT THE SAME TIME increase 23-23-23-23-27-27-27 stitches evenly on the row = 189-201-217-229-249-269-291 stitches, as follows: Change to circular needle size 4 mm, work 1 edge-stitch, rib (knit 1 and purl 1 – remember to increase) until there are 2 stitches left, knit 1 and work 1 edge-stitch. When the rib measures 3-3-3-3-4-4-4 cm, cast off. The jacket measures approx. 54-56-58-60-62-64-66 cm. SLEEVES: The sleeve is worked top down. Lay the piece flat and insert 1 marker at the top of the armhole. NOTE: this is not the knitted-up row but a few cms down the front piece. Use circular needle size 5 mm and knit up tightly or use a smaller needle size. KNIT UP STITCHES AS FOLLOWS: Start in the middle of the cast-on stitches under the sleeve and knit up 64-64-74-76-78-86-90 stitches around the armhole, with equal numbers of stitches on both sides of the marker. SLEEVE CAP: Work stocking stitch back and forth with short rows for the sleeve cap (to give the sleeve a better fit), starting from mid-under the sleeve as follows: ROW 1 (right side): Knit to 9-9-10-10-10-11-11 stitches past the marker on top of the sleeve, turn – remember KNITTING TIP. ROW 2 (wrong side): Purl to 9-9-10-10-10-11-11 stitches past the marker, turn. ROW 3 (right side): Knit to 10-10-11-8-6-5-5 stitches past the previous turn, turn. ROW 4 (wrong side): Purl to 10-10-11-8-6-5-5 stitches past the previous turn, turn. Repeat ROWS 3 and 4 until you have turned a total of 6-6-6-8-10-12-12 times (3-3-3-4-5-6-6 times each side, with the last row from the wrong side). AFTER THE LAST TURN: After the last row-4, turn and knit back to the beginning of the round (mid-under the sleeve). Insert 1 marker-thread here; it is used when decreasing under the sleeve. Allow it to follow your work onwards. SLEEVE CONTINUED: Work stocking stitch in the round. AT THE SAME TIME after the first round, decrease 2 stitches mid-under the sleeve - read DECREASE TIP, every 2nd round 2-2-2-2-2-4-4 times, then decrease 2 stitches every 4½-4½-3½-2½-2½-2-1½ cm 4-4-8-8-8-9-10 times (a total of 6-6-10-10-10-13-14 decreases in height) = 52-52-54-56-58-60-62 stitches. Continue working until the sleeve measures 45-45-44-45-43-43-41 cm from the shoulder. Change to double pointed needles size 4 mm. Work rib (knit 1 and purl 1), AT THE SAME TIME increase 6 stitches evenly on the first round = 58-58-60-62-64-66-68 stitches. When the rib measures 3-3-3-3-4-4-4 cm, cast off. The sleeve measures approx. 48-48-47-48-47-47-45 cm. BANDS/NECK: Use circular needle size 4 mm. Start at the bottom of the right front piece and knit up 233 to 291 stitches, inside the edge-stitch around the whole opening on the jacket, working as follows: Knit up 1 stitch in each row on the rib, then 1 stitch in 3 of 4 rows in height up the front piece, knit up 1 stitch in each stitch around the neck, then the same number of stitches down the left front piece as on the right front piece. Work the first row from the wrong side as follows: 1 edge-stitch, rib (purl 1 and knit 1) until there are 2 stitches left, purl 1 and 1 edge-stitch. Work this rib back and forth for 1½-1½-1½-2-2-2-2 cm. Now work the BUTTONHOLES – read explanation above on the right band. Continue working until the rib measures 3-3-3-4-4-4-4 cm. Cast off with rib. ASSEMBLY: Sew the buttons onto the left band. |
