How do I find alternative weight yarn when pattern asks you to use, 1 strand each Alaska + Alpaca ie two different yarns at the same time
08.02.2025 - 14:47DROPS Design answered:
Dear Maggi, if you want to continue working with 2 threads, but different threads, calculate the yardage for each yarn separately and compare it to each of the new yarns. If you want to work with 1 thread that has the same thickness as both threads together, you can use this lesson and check the section: 2 strands of different meterage to 1 strand; calculate from the yarn with the shortest yardage. Happy knitting!

In the instructions for the panel/chart re: the black squares, it tells you ' do not knit these sts – skip over these squares. What does that mean....can you explain more.
26.01.2025 - 14:54DROPS Design answered:
Dear Maggi, these black stitches are drawn so that you can align the pattern in the later rows, where we have more stitches. But these stitches don't exist yet (since you have less stitches in these rounds of the garment). So simply ignore the black squares (you don't skip over any stitches, just ignore them when reading and work the next symbol in the chart). Happy knitting!

Hi, I was wondering if I could use a 10 ply yarn by itself for this pattern or if I just wanted to use 1 yarn what ply should I use. Thanks in advance. Sharyn
13.07.2023 - 14:57DROPS Design answered:
Dear Sharyn, Alaska is also a 10 ply/ group C yarn, so it wouldn't be enough to substitute both threads, but you could make the garment with it, it would just be a thinner garment. You could use a group E yarn, which would correspond to a 14 ply yarn, to obtain the same thickness of the garment. Happy knitting!

Bind off the remaining sts, the piece measures approx. 55-55-58-60-62 cm. Assembly: Sew shoulder seams. Collar with rolled edge: Pick up and knit approx. 60-78 sts (divisible by 6) around the neck on smaller double-pointed needles with 1 strand each Alaska + Alpaca; join and place a marker at the join. Knit rib for 12-12-14-14-14 cm and then bind off in rib. Pick up and knit approx. 56-72 new sts in the 1st row of the rib (at neckline) on smaller double-pointed needles with 1 strand each Alaska + Alpaca; join and knit 3 rows stockinette st (= rolled edge).
