I don’t quite get the diagram A1. What is meant with these charts? Do I flip my piece every stitch or do I just change between purling and knitting? I don’t know for how many rows I am supposed to work the chart or do I just do the lowest row of the diagram? Please help a girl out!

------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- PATTERN: See diagrams A.1 to A.6. Choose diagram for your size in A.4. The diagrams are worked from right to left when working from the right side and left to right when working from the wrong side. INCREASE TIP-1: INCREASE 1 STITCH TOWARDS LEFT – from RIGHT SIDE: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the row below, pick up the strand from the front and knit through the stitch-loop that lies on the back of the needle. INCREASE 1 STITCH TOWARDS THE RIGHT- from RIGHT SIDE: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the row below, pick up the strand from the back and knit through the stitch-loop that lies on the front of the needle. INCREASE TIP-2: INCREASE 1 STITCH TOWARDS THE RIGHT- from WRONG SIDE: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the row below, pick up the strand from the back and purl through the stitch-loop that lies on the front of the needle. INCREASE 1 STITCH TOWARDS LEFT – from WRONG SIDE: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the row below, pick up the strand from the front and purl through the stitch-loop that lies on the back of the needle. DECREASE TIP (for sleeves): Decrease on each side of the marker under the sleeve as follows: Work 2 together both before and after the marker, knitting or purling together depending on which is least visible in the moss stitch. KNITTING TIP: When working short rows, there will be a small hole after each turn. This hole can be closed by tightening the strand or using the technique German Short Rows as follows: Slip the first stitch purl-wise with the strand in front, take the strand over the right needle and tighten well from the back (2 loops on the needle). These loops are worked together on the next row. ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- JUMPER – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The pattern uses both long and short needles; start with the length which fits the number of stitches and change when necessary. Moss stitch is worked on the back piece, and cables and moss stitch on the front piece. The piece is started back and forth, casting on stitches at the back of the neck and working the back piece top down, while increasing stitches on each side for the shoulders until the correct stitch count is achieved. The shoulders are slightly diagonal. The back piece is continued as far as the armholes. The front piece is then worked in 2 sections, knitting up stitches along 1 back shoulder, working pattern and increasing for the neckline. This is repeated on the other shoulder. The 2 front sections are joined when the neckline is finished and the front piece continued as far as the armholes. The front and back pieces are joined on the same circular needle and the body is worked in the round. Stitches are knitted up around the armholes for the sleeves, which are started back and forth for the sleeve cap, then finished in the round. Stitches are knitted up around the neckline and the neck is worked in the round to finish. The neck is folded double to the inside and sewn down. BACK PIECE: The piece is worked back and forth. Cast on 35-35-35-35-39-39-39 stitches with circular needle size 4 mm and DROPS Saga. ROW 1 (wrong side): Purl. ROW 2 (right side): Read INCREASE TIP-1. Knit 3, increase 1 stitch towards the left, work A.1 until there are 3 stitches left on the row, increase 1 stitch towards the right, knit 3. ROW 3 (wrong side): Read INCREASE TIP-2. Purl 3, increase 1 stitch towards the right, continue A.1 until there are 3 stitches left on the row, increase 1 stitch towards the left, purl 3. Work ROWS 2 and 3 a total of 16-17-19-20-22-24-27 times (32-34-38-40-44-48-54 rows worked) = 99-103-111-115-127-135-147 stitches. Insert 1 marker outermost on one side; the piece is now measured from here! Continue A.1 with 3 stocking stitches on each side until the piece measures 11-11-11-12-12-11-11 cm from the marker and down the armhole. Remember to maintain the knitting tension. Now increase for the armholes. INCREASE FOR ARMHOLES: ROW 1 (right side): Remember INCREASE TIP-1. Knit 3, increase 1 stitch towards the left, work A.1 until there are 3 stitches left on the row, increase 1 stitch towards the right, knit 3. ROW 2 (wrong side): Continue A.1 with 3 purled stitches on each side. Work ROWS 1 and 2 a total of 1-3-3-3-3-4-4 times = 101-109-117-121-133-143-155 stitches. Continue working until the piece measures 12-13-13-14-14-14-14 cm, from the marker down the armhole, finishing after a row from the wrong side. Cut the strand and place the stitches on a stitch holder. Work the left front piece along the left back shoulder as follows. LEFT FRONT PIECE: Find the left back shoulder as follows: Lay the back piece flat, right side up, with the stitch holder/thread towards you; left side of piece = left shoulder. Start from the right side by the neck on the left back shoulder and knit up 1 stitch in each row worked, inside the outermost stitch as far as the armhole (32-34-38-40-44-48-54 stitches), in addition, knit up 2 stitches down the side of the back piece = 34-36-40-42-46-50-56 shoulder-stitches. All measurements on the front piece are taken from this knitted up row. Work as follows, with the first row from the wrong side. ROW 1 (wrong side): Purl and increase 5-5-4-4-5-5-5 stitches evenly on the row = 39-41-44-46-51-55-61 stitches. ROW 2 (right side): Knit 3, purl 3, work A.2, purl 3, then A.1 across 21-23-26-28-33-37-43 stitches, knit 3. Continue this pattern. When the piece measures 6-6-7-7-7-8-8 cm, begin increasing for the neckline after the 3 knitted stitches at the beginning of each row from the right side as follows: ROW 1 (right side): Remember INCREASE TIP-1. Knit 3, increase 1 stitch towards the left, continue the pattern to end of row. ROW 2 (wrong side): Continue the pattern working the increased stitches in stocking stitch. Work ROWS 1 and 2 a total of 6 times (12 rows worked) = 45-47-50-52-57-61-67 stitches, with the last row from the wrong side. Cut the strand and place the stitches on a stitch holder. Work the right front piece along the right back shoulder as follows. RIGHT FRONT PIECE: Start from the right side by the shoulder on the right back shoulder and begin by knitting up 2 stitches a little way down the side of the back shoulder, then knit up 1 stitch in each row worked, inside the outermost stitch as far as the neck (32-34-38-40-44-48-54 stitches) = 34-36-40-42-46-50-56 shoulder-stitches. All measurements on the front piece are taken from this knitted-up row. ROW 1 (wrong side): Purl and increase 5-5-4-4-5-5-5 stitches evenly on the row = 39-41-44-46-51-55-61 stitches. ROW 2 (right side): Knit 3, work A.1 across 21-23-26-28-33-37-43 stitches purl 3, work A.3, purl 3, knit 3. Continue this pattern. When the piece measures 6-6-7-7-7-8-8 cm, begin increasing for the neckline before the last 3 knitted stitches on each row from the right side as follows: ROW 1 (right side): Work until there are 3 stitches left, increase 1 stitch towards the right, knit 3 - remember INCREASE TIP-1 ROW 2 (wrong side): Continue the pattern working the increased stitches in stocking stitch. Work ROWS 1 and 2 a total of 6 times (12 rows worked) = 45-47-50-52-57-61-67 stitches, with the last row from the wrong side. The front pieces are now joined. FRONT PIECE (right and left pieces joined): From the right side: Continue the pattern across the 45-47-50-52-57-61-67 stitches on the right front piece, cast on 22-22-24-24-26-26-26 stitches for the neckline, continue the pattern across the 45-47-50-52-57-61-67 stitches on the left front piece (working the last row in A.2) = 112-116-124-128-140-148-160 stitches. From the wrong side: Purl 3, work A.1 across 21-23-26-28-33-37-43 stitches, knit 3, A.2, knit 3, A.5, A.4 (see diagram for your size), A.6, knit 3, A.3, knit 3, A.1 across 21-23-26-28-33-37-43 stitches, purl 3. Make sure the first cables in A.5 and A.6 match the cabling in A.2/A.3. Continue this pattern until the piece measures 25-25-27-28-30-31-33 cm. Now increase for the armholes. INCREASE FOR ARMHOLES: ROW 1 (right side): Knit 3, increase 1 stitch towards the left, continue the pattern until there are 3 stitches left on the row, increase 1 stitch towards the right, knit 3. ROW 2 (wrong side): Work pattern as before with 3 purled stitches on each side. Work ROWS 1 and 2 a total of 1-3-3-3-3-4-4 times = 114-122-130-134-146-156-168 stitches. Continue working until the piece measures 26-27-29-30-32-34-36 cm from the knitted-up row and finishing after a row from the wrong side. The front and back pieces are now joined for the body. The front piece is longer than the back piece; approx. 2 cm of the neckline depth will lie on the back piece. BODY: Work the 114-122-130-134-146-156-168 stitches on the front piece, cast on 4-4-4-8-8-10-10 stitches (mid-under the sleeve), work the 101-109-117-121-133-143-155 stitches on the back piece, cast on 4-4-4-8-8-10-10 stitches (mid-under the sleeve) = 223-239-255-271-295-319-343 stitches. NOTE! The new stitches under each sleeve are worked in A.1; if the pattern does not fit under the sleeve, adjust by decreasing 1 stitch so the pattern continues neatly. Cut the strand and begin the round in the middle of the cast-on stitches under one sleeve. Continue the pattern in the round until the piece measures 47-49-51-53-54-56-58 cm from the cast-on edge mid-back. Now increase across the moss stitch and the cables as follows. Change to circular needle size 3 mm. Work rib (knit 1 and purl 1), AT THE SAME TIME increase 1 stitch across each cable (there is now an odd number of stitches in each cable) with 1 knitted stitch at the beginning and end of each cable. Across the 3 purled stitches between the cables, work purl 1, knit 1 and purl 1. In addition, increase 8-10-12-12-14-14-16 stitches evenly across the moss stitches = 236-254-272-288-314-338-364 stitches. Work the rib for 4-4-4-4-5-5-5 cm. Cast off with knit over knit and purl over purl. The jumper measures approx. 51-53-55-57-59-61-63 cm from mid-back and 53-55-57-59-62-63-65 cm from the top of the shoulder. SLEEVES: The sleeve is worked top down. Lay the piece flat and insert 1 marker at the top of the armhole. NOTE: This is not the same as the knitted-up row on the front piece but a few cms down the front piece. Use circular needle size 4 mm and knit up tightly or use a smaller needle size. KNIT UP STITCHES AS FOLLOWS: Start in the middle of the cast-on stitches under the sleeve and knit up 83-87-91-99-103-111-115 stitches around the armhole, with equal numbers of stitches on both sides of the marker. SLEEVE CAP: Begin by working short rows back and forth for the sleeve cap (this gives the sleeve a better fit), starting from mid-under the sleeve as follows: ROW 1 (right side): Knit to 8-8-10-10-10-12-12 stitches before the marker on top of the sleeve, work A.1 across the next 16-16-20-20-20-24-24 stitches, turn – read KNITTING TIP. ROW 2 (wrong side): Continue A.1 across the first 20-20-24-24-24-28-28 stitches, turn. ROW 3 (right side): Work A.1 to 4 stitches past the previous turn, turn. ROW 4 (wrong side): Work A.1 to 4 stitches past the previous turn, turn. Repeat ROWS 3 and 4 until you have turned a total of 10-10-10-10-12-12-12 times (5-5-5-5-6-6-6 times each side, with the last row from the wrong side). AFTER THE LAST TURN: After the last row-4, turn and work back to the beginning of the round (mid-under the sleeve) from the right side. Insert 1 marker here; it is used when decreasing under the sleeve. Allow it to follow your work onwards. SLEEVE CONTINUED: Continue A.1 in the round across all stitches. AT THE SAME TIME after 1 round, decrease stitches mid-under the sleeve - read DECREASE TIP as follows: Decrease 2 stitches every 2nd round 2 times, then decrease 2 stitches every 4-4-4-3-3-2-2 cm 4-5-6-9-10-13-14 times = 71-73-75-77-79-81-83 stitches. Continue working until the sleeve measures 49-50-49-49-46-45-43 cm from the shoulder. Change to double pointed needles size 3 mm. Work rib (knit 1 and purl 1), AT THE SAME TIME increase 5 stitches evenly on the first round = 76-78-80-82-84-86-88 stitches. When the rib measures 4-4-4-4-5-5-5 cm, cast off slightly loosely with knit over knit and purl over purl. The sleeve measures approx. 53-54-53-53-51-50-48 cm from the top of shoulder. NECK: Use circular needle size 3 mm. Start from the right side on one shoulder-line and knit up 102 to 118 stitches inside 1 stitch around the neckline. Work rib in the round (knit 1 and purl 1) for 8-9 cm. Cast off slightly loosely with knit over knit and purl over purl. Fold the neck double to the inside and sew down. To avoid the neck being tight and rolling outwards, it is important that the seam is elastic. |
