Bon tricot!

I don't understand the instruction "Continue the established pattern. There are 126-126-134-138-150-158-170 stitches after the first row. The cast-on stitches are worked in pattern A.4; the 3 stocking stitches mid-front are drawn into A.4. ". How do I work A.4? I have 26 cast on stitches, but the chart is much wider than this, and the center stitches of A.4 are not 26.
30.09.2026 - 22:27DROPS Design answered:
Dear Lauren, you have cast on 26 sts between both shoulders and you will work now the first row in A.4 over the 26 sts cast on + the 3 sts stocking stitch at the end of right shoulder + the 3 sts stocking st at the beg of left shoulder ( increasing 6 sts over these stitches as shown in diagram = in the middle of diagram) there are now (3+26+6+3=38 sts for A.4) = you have now 126-126-134-138-150-158-170 sts on needle. Happy knitting!

Bon tricot!

------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- PATTERN: See diagrams A.1 to A.5. Choose diagram for your size in A.2 and A.3. The diagrams are read from right to left when working from the right side and left to right when working from the wrong side. INCREASE TIP-1: INCREASE 1 STITCH TOWARDS LEFT – from RIGHT SIDE: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the row below, pick up the strand from the front and knit through the stitch-loop that lies on the back of the needle. INCREASE 1 STITCH TOWARDS THE RIGHT- from RIGHT SIDE: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the row below, pick up the strand from the back and knit through the stitch-loop that lies on the front of the needle. INCREASE TIP-2: INCREASE 1 STITCH TOWARDS THE RIGHT- from WRONG SIDE: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the row below, pick up the strand from the back and purl through the stitch-loop that lies on the front of the needle. INCREASE 1 STITCH TOWARDS LEFT – from WRONG SIDE: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the row below, pick up the strand from the front and purl through the stitch-loop that lies on the back of the needle. DECREASE TIP (for sleeves): Decrease 1 stitch on each side of the marker mid-under the sleeve. Work 2 together before the marker and work 2 together after the marker, choosing whether to knit or purl together so the stitches are as invisible as possible in the moss stitch. ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- JUMPER – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The pattern uses both long and short needles; start with the length which fits the number of stitches and change when necessary. The piece is started back and forth, casting on stitches at the back of the neck and working the back piece top down, while increasing stitches on each side until the correct stitch number is achieved. The back piece has slightly diagonal shoulders. Work as far as the armholes. The front piece is then worked in 2 sections, knitting up stitches along 1 back shoulder, working pattern and increasing for the neckline. This is repeated on the other shoulder. The 2 front sections are joined when the neckline is finished and worked as far as the armholes. The front and back pieces are joined on the same circular needle and the body worked in the round. Stitches are knitted up around the armholes for the sleeves, which are started back and forth for the sleeve cap, then finished in the round. Stitches are knitted up around the neckline and the neck is worked in the round to finish. The neck is folded double to the inside and sewn down. BACK PIECE: The piece is worked back and forth on circular needle. Cast on 39-39-39-39-43-43-43 stitches with circular needle size 4 mm and DROPS Lima or DROPS Saga. ROW 1 (wrong side): Purl. ROW 2 (right side): Read INCREASE TIP-1. Knit 3, increase 1 stitch towards the left, work A.1 until there are 3 stitches left on the row, increase 1 stitch towards the right, knit 3. ROW 3 (wrong side): Read INCREASE TIP-2. Purl 3, increase 1 stitch towards the right, work A.1 until there are 3 stitches left on the row, increase 1 stitch towards the left, purl 3. Work ROWS 2 and 3 a total of 14-14-16-17-19-21-24 times (28-28-32-34-38-42-48 rows worked) = 95-95-103-107-119-127-139 stitches. Insert 1 marker outermost on one side. The piece is now measured from here! Continue A.1 with 3 stocking stitches on each side - Remember to maintain the knitting tension - until the piece measures 11-11-11-12-12-11-11 cm from the marker and down the armhole. Now increase for the armholes. INCREASE FOR ARMHOLES: ROW 1 (right side): Knit 3, increase 1 stitch towards the left, work pattern until there are 3 stitches left, increase 1 stitch towards the right, knit 3. ROW 2 (wrong side): Work A.1 with 3 purled stitches on each side. Work ROWS 1 and 2 a total of 1-3-3-3-3-4-4 times = 97-101-109-113-125-135-147 stitches. Continue working until the piece measures 12-13-13-14-14-14-14 cm, from the marker and down the armhole, finishing after a row from the wrong side. Cut the strand, place the stitches on a stitch holder and work the left front piece along the left back shoulder. LEFT FRONT PIECE: Find the left back shoulder as follows: Lay the back piece flat, right side up, with the stitch holder/thread towards you; left side of piece = left shoulder. Start from the right side by the neck on the left back shoulder and knit up 1 stitch in each row worked, inside the outermost stitch as far as the armhole (28-28-32-34-38-42-48 stitches), finish by knitting up 2 stitches down the side of the back piece = 30-30-34-36-40-44-50 shoulder-stitches. All measurements on the front piece are taken from this knitted-up row. Work as follows, with the first row from the wrong side. ROW 1 (wrong side): Purl 3, work A.1 across the next 3-3-7-9-15-19-25 stitches (starting on row 2 in A.1), the first row in A.2 across 21-21-21-21-19-19-19 stitches, purl 3 = 38-38-42-44-48-52-58 stitches ROW 2 (right side): Knit 3, A.2 (29-29-29-29-27-27-27 stitches), A.1 across 3-3-7-9-15-19-25 stitches, knit 3. Continue this pattern. On the row marked with an arrow, begin increasing for the neckline after the 3 knitted stitches, on each row from the right side as follows: ROW 1 (right side): Remember INCREASE TIP-1. Knit 3, increase 1 stitch towards the right, continue the pattern to end of row. ROW 2 (wrong side): Continue the pattern, working the increased stitches into A.2. Work ROWS 1 and 2 a total of 9-9-9-9-11-11-11 times (18-18-18-18-22-22-22 rows worked) = 47-47-51-53-59-63-69 stitches (last row from the wrong side). You have worked up to and including the row with a star in A.2. Cut the strand, place the stitches on a stitch holder and work the right front piece along the right back shoulder. RIGHT FRONT PIECE: Start from the right side by the armhole on the right back shoulder and knit up 2 stitches a little way down the side of the back piece. Knit up 2 stitches a little way down the back piece, then knit up 1 stitch in each row worked along the shoulder, inside the outermost stitch as far as the armhole (28-28-32-34-38-42-48 stitches) = 30-30-34-36-40-44-50 shoulder-stitches. All measurements on the front piece are taken from this knitted-up row. Work as follows, with the first row from the wrong side. ROW 1 (wrong side): Purl 3, work the first row in A.3 (21-21-21-21-19-19-19 stitches), A.1 across the next 3-3-7-9-15-19-25 stitches (start on row 2 in A.1), purl 3 = 38-38-42-44-48-52-58 stitches. ROW 2 (right side): Knit 3, A.1 across 3-3-7-9-15-19-25 stitches, A.3 (29-29-29-29-27-27-27 stitches), knit 3. Continue this pattern. On the row marked with an arrow, begin increasing for the neckline before 3 knitted stitches, on each row from the right side as follows: ROW 1 (right side): Work until there are 3 stitches left, increase 1 stitch towards the right, knit 3 - remember INCREASE TIP-1. ROW 2 (wrong side): Continue the pattern, working the increased stitches into A.3. Work ROWS 1 and 2 a total of 9-9-9-9-11-11-11 times (18-18-18-18-22-22-22 rows worked) = 47-47-51-53-59-63-69 stitches (with the last row from the wrong side). You have worked up to and including the row with a star in A.3. The 2 front pieces are now joined. FRONT PIECE (right and left front pieces joined): From the right side: Work the 47-47-51-53-59-63-69 stitches on the right front piece (continuing with the last row in A.3), cast on 26 stitches for the neckline, work the 47-47-51-53-59-63-69 stitches from the left front piece (last row in A.2) = 120-120-128-132-144-152-164 stitches. Continue the established pattern. There are 126-126-134-138-150-158-170 stitches after the first row. The cast-on stitches are worked in pattern A.4; the 3 stocking stitches mid-front are drawn into A.4. NOTE! Make sure to continue the cables correctly: Cables with 6 stitches are worked every 6th row, cables with 8 stitches every 12th row. The middle cable of 16 stitches (2 cables x 8 stitches) is worked every 8th row and cables with 12 stitches (2 cables x 6 stitches are worked every 6th row. When the piece measures 25-25-27-28-30-31-33 cm, increase for the armholes. INCREASE FOR ARMHOLES: ROW 1 (right side): Knit 3, increase 1 stitch towards the left, work pattern until there are 3 stitches left on the row, increase 1 stitch towards the right, knit 3. ROW 2 (wrong side): Continue A.1 with 3 purled stitches on each side. Work ROWS 1 and 2 a total of 1-3-3-3-3-4-4 times = 128-132-140-144-156-166-178 stitches. Continue working until the piece measures 26-27-29-30-32-34-36 cm, finishing with a row from the wrong side. The front and back pieces are now joined for the body. The front piece is longer than the back piece; approx. 2 cm of the neckline-depth will lie on the back piece. BODY: Work the 128-132-140-144-156-166-178 stitches on the front piece, cast on 4-4-4-8-8-10-10 stitches (mid-under the sleeve), work the 97-101-109-113-125-135-147 stitches on the back piece, cast on 4-4-4-8-8-10-10 stitches (mid-under the sleeve) = 233-241-257-273-297-321-345 stitches. NOTE! The cast-on stitches under each sleeve are worked in pattern A.1. If the pattern does not match the stitches on the front/back pieces, decrease 1 stitch before beginning the pattern so it is correct. Cut the strand and begin the round in the middle of the new stitches under one sleeve. Continue pattern in the round until the piece measures 47-49-51-53-54-56-58 cm from the cast-on edge mid-back. Now increase across both the moss stitches and cables as follows. Change to circular needle size 3 mm. Work rib (knit 1 and purl 1). AT THE SAME TIME increase 1 stitch in each cable so there is an odd number of stitches in each cable. Adjust so each cable begins and ends with a knitted stitch in the rib; across the 3 purled stitches in each cable, purl 1, knit 1 and purl 1. In addition, increase 8-10-12-12-14-14-16 stitches evenly across the moss stitch sections = 232-242-260-276-302-326-352 stitches. When the rib measures 4-4-4-4-5-5-5 cm, cast off with rib. The jumper measures approx. 51-53-55-57-59-61-63 cm from mid-back and 53-55-57-59-62-63-65 cm from top of shoulder. SLEEVES: The sleeve is worked top down. Lay the piece flat and insert 1 marker at the top of the armhole. NOTE: This is not the same as the knitted-up row on the front piece but a few cms down the front piece. Use circular needle size 4 mm and knit up tightly or use a smaller needle size. KNIT UP STITCHES AS FOLLOWS: Start in the middle of the cast-on stitches under the sleeve and knit up 83-87-91-99-103-111-115 stitches around the armhole, with equal numbers of stitches on both sides of the marker. PATTERN: Work pattern, starting mid-under the sleeve: A.1 across the first 35-37-39-43-45-49-51 stitches, A.5, A.1 across the last 34-36-38-42-44-48-50 stitches. After the first row in A.5, there are 18 stitches in A.5 and 87-91-95-103-107-115-119 stitches around the sleeve. AT THE SAME TIME while working the first row, work short rows for the sleeve cap as follows: SLEEVE CAP: Work pattern in short rows back and forth across the sleeve cap (to give the sleeve a better fit), starting from mid-under the sleeve as follows: ROW 1 (right side): Knit until there are 4 stitches left before A.5, work 4 stitches of A.1, then A.5 and 4 stitches of A.1 (26 more stitches), turn – read KNITTING TIP. ROW 2 (wrong side): Work 26 stitches of pattern, turn. ROW 3 (right side): Work to 4 stitches past the previous turn, turn. ROW 4 (wrong side): Work to 4 stitches past the previous turn, turn. Repeat ROWS 3 and 4 until you have turned a total of 10-10-10-10-12-12-12 times (5-5-5-5-6-6-6 times each side, with the last row from the wrong side). AFTER THE LAST TURN: After the last row 4, turn and work back from the right side to the beginning of the round (mid-under the sleeve). Insert 1 marker here; it is used when decreasing under the sleeve. Allow it to follow your work onwards. SLEEVE CONTINUED: Continue patterns A.1 and A.5 in the round. AT THE SAME TIME after the first round, decrease 2 stitches mid-under the sleeve, 2 times every 2nd round, then decrease 2 stitches 6-7-8-11-12-15-16 times every 4-4-4-3-3-2-2 cm – read DECREASE TIP = 71-73-75-77-79-81-83 stitches. Continue working until the sleeve measures 49-50-49-49-46-45-43 cm from mid-top of shoulder. Change to double pointed needles size 3 mm. Work rib (knit 1 and purl 1: decrease 1 stitch in each cable so each cable begins and ends with a knitted stitch, and purl 1, knit 1, purl 1 across the 3 purled stitches in each side and increase 6 stitches evenly across the moss stitches) = 76-78-80-82-84-86-88 stitches. When the rib measures 4-4-4-4-5-5-5 cm, cast off slightly loosely with rib. The sleeve measures approx. 53-54-53-53-51-50-48 cm from the shoulder. NECK: Use circular needle size 3 mm. Start from the right side on one shoulder-line and knit up 104 to 112 stitches inside 1 stitch around the neckline. Work rib in the round (knit 1 and purl 1) for 8-9 cm. Cast off with rib. Fold the neck double to the inside and sew down. To avoid the neck being tight and rolling outwards, it is important that the seam is elastic. |
