Here is an example of how you can crochet a border round the edge of a piece.
Crochet as follows: 1 sc in first st * ch 2, skip 2 sts in width/ 4 rows in height, 1 sc in next st *, repeat from *-*.
Chain more or less sts, and skip more or less, depending on the border you want and what the pattern might call for.
