Hello, I was wondering what to do when pattern says “ Take away 1 strand and knit garter st” after you just cast on the stitches with two strands of yarn. How do you take away one strand? Why would you knit with two strands, it if you will take one away? Or does it mean to leave one strand on the side to then use for picking up neck stitches? Thank you so much for your help.

Dear Marcela, this video shows how to cast on stitches with 2 strands to get an even more elastic edge, and then only continue working with just 1 strand (the video also shows how to cast off with 2 strands). Happy knitting!

Bon tricot!

PULLOVER: Gauge: 12 sts x 22 rows with Alaska in garter st = 10 x 10 cm. Rib: * K 2, P 2 *, repeat from * - *. Front: Cast on 48-53-58-64-70 sts with 2 strands Alaska. Take away 1 strand and knit garter st. When the piece measures 10 cm inc 1 st at each side every 8-8-9-9-10 cm a total of 3 times = 54-59-64-70-76 sts. When the piece measures 34-35-37-38-39 cm bind off for armhole at each side every other row: 3 sts 1-1-1-1-2 times, 2 sts 0-1-2-3-3 times and 1 st 2 times = 44-45-46-48-48 sts. When the piece measures 49-51-53-55-57 cm bind off the center 8-9-10-12-12 sts for the neck. Then bind off at each neck edge every other row: 2 sts 1 time and 1 st 3 times = 13 sts remain on each shoulder. Bind off when the piece measures 55-57-59-61-63 cm. Back: Cast on and knit the same as the front. Bind off for armhole as on front and when the piece measures 53-55-57-59-61 cm bind off the center 16-17-18-20-20 sts for the neck. On the next row dec 1 st at each neck edge = 13 sts remain on each shoulder. Bind off when the piece measures 55-57-59-61-63 cm. Sleeve: Cast on 32-32-36-36-36 sts with 2 strands Vienna. Knit rib for 16 cm with 2 strands of yarn. Change to 1 strand of Alaska and knit garter st to finished measurements. After the rib inc 1 st at each side every 5-4.5-5.5-4-3 cm a total of 7-8-6-8-9 times = 46-48-48-52-54 sts. When sleeve measures 50-49-47-46-44 cm bind off for sleeve cap at each side every other row: 3 sts 1 time, 2 sts 2-2-1-1-1 times, dec 1 st 2-5-9-10-12 times, then bind off 2 sts at each side until the piece measures 57-58-58-58-59 cm. Bind off remaining sts. Assembly: Sew right shoulder. Collar: Pick up approx. 52 to 60 sts (divisible by 4) around the neck with 1 strand Alaska. If you pick up less than 52 sts you must inc evenly distributed on the 1st row to 52 sts. K 1 row (wrong side row), then K 1 row (right side row). Then knit rib. When the collar measures 11 cm change to 2 strands Vienna, knit 3 rows rib, bind off. Sew left shoulder and up collar edge. Sew in sleeves. Sew sleeve and side seams in one. Leave the lower 7 cm at each side open for slit. POMPOM SCARF: Length: approx. 126 cm. Materials: DROPS ALASKA from Garnstudio 250 gr nr 02, natural white. and use: DROPS VIENNA from Garnstudio 50 gr nr 21, natural white. Or use: DROPS Melody from Garnstudio 50 gr nr 01, off white. DROPS 4 mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain correct gauge. Template: Cut 2 circles out of stiff cardboard 12 cm in diameter and cut holes 4 cm in diameter in the middle of them (doughnut-shape). Hold these together and wrap yarn through the hole and around the outer edge. Pompom: Cut a strand of Alaska approx. 5.5 meters, fold yarn double and wrap around both templates. Repeat 3 more times with Alaska + 1 time with Vienna/Melody - the ball is made with 4 strands Alaska + 1 strand Vienna/Melody. Cut the yarn on the outer edge between the two templates. Cut 1 strand of Alaska approx. 25 cm long, fold double and thread between templates, pull tight around strands (inner edge) and knot. This looped strand will be used to put the balls together into the scarf. Pull pompom out of template and trim evenly with a scissor - so that the pompom will be approx. 8 cm in diameter. Scarf: Make 16 pompoms per instructions above. Crochet together with Alaska as follows: start with 1 sc on the looped strand on 1st ball, * ch 10, then 1 sc in the looped strand on the next ball, ch 10 concealed inside that ball and 1 sc on the other side of the looped strand on the same ball *, repeat from * - * until all balls are crocheted together. Cut yarn and fasten. |
