Great, quick, easy pattern. I filled it with catnip and skipped the felting step (the cats wouldn't let me take that much time. They also wouldn't let me get the whiskers done! XD). My cats are loving their new toy!

------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- CHAIN STITCH: If you work outermost on the hook the chain stitch will often be too tight; 1 chain stitch should be as long as 1 double crochet is wide. CROCHET INFORMATION: Each round starts with 1 chain stitch. This chain stitch does NOT replace the first double crochet. Each round finishes with 1 slip stitch in this chain stitch. WORK TOGETHER: Work 2 double crochets together to 1 stitch as follows: Work 1 double crochet in the stitch below, but wait with the last pull-through (= 2 loops on the hook). Work 1 double crochet in the next stitch and pull the last yarn over through all 3 loops on the hook. ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- MOUSE FOR CATS – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE : The piece is worked in the round from nose to tail. The eyes and ears are worked as you go. The mouse is filled with wadding, then the tail is worked. Whiskers are attached to finish. MOUSE: Work 3 chain stitches with hook size 3.5 mm and goldenrod or powder pink Lima – read CHAIN STITCH and CROCHET INFORMATION in explanations above. Form them into a ring with 1 slip stitch in the first chain stitch. Then work as follows: REMEMBER THE CROCHET TENSION! ROUND 1: 3 double crochets around the ring. ROUND 2: 2 double crochets in each double crochet = 6 double crochets. ROUND 3: 2 double crochets in each double crochet = 12 double crochets. ROUND 4: 1 double crochet in each double crochet = 12 double crochets. ROUND 5: * 1 double crochet in the first/next double crochet, 2 double crochets in the next double crochet *, work from *-* to end of round = 18 double crochets. ROUND 6: 1 double crochet in each double crochet = 18 double crochets. ROUND 7: * 1 double crochet in each of the 2 first/next double crochets, 2 double crochets in the next double crochet *, work from *-* to end of round = 24 double crochets. ROUND 8: On this round, the eyes are made by working 2 long double crochets as follows: Continue with goldenrod/powder pink and work 1 double crochet in each of the first 8 double crochets, insert the hook in the next stitch on round 6 (= 2 rounds below), use dark grey and pull the dark grey strand through the stitch, change back to goldenrod/powder pink and pull the strand through the 2 loops on the hook (= 1 eye/1 long double crochet), work 1 double crochet in each of the next 6 double crochets with goldenrod/powder pink, insert the hook in the next stitch on round 6 (= 2 rounds below), use dark grey and pull the dark grey strand through the stitch, change back to goldenrod/powder pink and pull the strand through the 2 loops on the hook (= 1 eye/1 long double crochet), work 1 double crochet in each of the last 8 double crochets = 24 stitches. Fasten the dark grey strand on the inside (wrong side) of the mouse. ROUNDS 9-10: Continue with goldenrod/powder pink and work 1 double crochet in each double crochet = 24 double crochets. ROUND 11: The ears are worked on this round as follows: Work 1 double crochet in each of the first 7 double crochets, skip 1 double crochet, in the next double crochet work: 1 double crochet, 1 half-treble crochet, 1 chain stitch, 1 treble crochet, 3 double-treble crochets, 1 treble crochet, 1 chain stitch, 1 half-treble crochet and 1 double crochet (= ear), skip 1 double crochet, work 1 double crochet in each of the next 4 double crochets, skip 1 double crochet, in the next double crochet work: 1 double crochet, 1 half-treble crochet, 1 chain stitch, 1 treble crochet, 3 double-treble crochets, 1 treble crochet, 1 chain stitch, 1 half-treble crochet and 1 double crochet (= ear), skip 1 double crochet and work 1 double crochet in each of the last 7 double crochets. ROUND 12: Work 1 double crochet in each of the first 7 double crochets, work 3 double crochets evenly spaced behind the ear, work 1 double crochet in each of the 4 double crochets between the ears, work 3 double crochets evenly spaced behind the ear and 1 double crochet in each of the last 7 double crochets = 24 double crochets. ROUNDS 13-14: 1 double crochet in each double crochet = 24 double crochets. ROUND 15: * 1 double crochet in each of the 4 first/next double crochets, work together the next 2 double crochets - read WORK TOGETHER *, work from *-* to end of round = 20 double crochets. ROUND 16: * 1 double crochet in each of the 3 first/next double crochets, work together the next 2 double crochets *, work from *-* to end of round = 16 double crochets. ROUND 17: * 1 double crochet in each of the 2 first/next double crochets, work together the next 2 double crochets *, work from *-* to end of round = 12 double crochets. ROUND 18: * 1 double crochet in each of the 2 first/next double crochets, work together the next 2 double crochets *, work from *-* to end of round = 9 double crochets. Fill the mouse with wadding. ROUND 19: * 1 double crochet in the first/next double crochet, work together the next 2 double crochets *, work from *-* to end of round = 6 double crochets. ROUND 20: Work 2 and 2 double crochets together = 3 double crochets, do not cut the strand. Now work the tail. TAIL: Work 30 chain stitches, turn, work 1 double crochet in the 3rd chain stitch from the hook, 1 double crochet in each of the next 2 chain stitches, * skip 1 chain stitch, 1 double crochet in each of the next 3 chain stitches *, work from *-* to end of row, skip the last chain stitch and fasten with 1 slip stitch on the mouse. Cut and fasten the strand. WHISKERS: Cut 3 x 10 cm strands of dark grey. Thread the strands through the nose and tie a double knot. Trim the strands to desired length. GENTLE FELTING IN TUMBLE-DRIER: The piece is gently felted to give it a stronger surface. This felting does not change the size. Dampen the surface with a little cold or lukewarm water – do not make it too wet. Lay the mouse in an empty tumble-drier and use a hot programme, for 20-30 minutes. Check the mouse during the drying – if it is dried for too long it will shrink. Leave it to dry completely at room temperature. AFTER FELTING: If the piece is not felted enough and is too big: Wash the piece one more time in the washing machine while it is still wet add a terry towel that measures approx. 50 x 70 cm - NOTE: Do not use a short program. If the piece has been felted too much and is too small: While the piece is still wet stretch it to the correct measurements, if the piece is dry, make sure to soak it first. Remember: All subsequent washes are as a normal wool garment. |
