Pattern li-074 Polar stripes: The pattern states to start increasing for thumb at 8 cm..one other person asked this too(Louise) and mentioned it should read 18 cm. Which is correct? I was wondering the same thing

Hi Deborah, You start to increase for the thumb gusset when the mitten measures 8 cm. The thumb itself does not start until the thumb gusset is finished. Happy knitting!

Felted DROPS mittens with stripes in "Lima"
DROPS 173-29 |
|
STRIPES: Stripe 1: 3 rounds dark grey Stripe 2: 8 rounds purple Stripe 3: 5 rounds dark purple Stripe 4: 12 rounds dark grey Stripe 5: 5 rounds grey Stripe 6: 3 rounds purple Stripe 7: 12 rounds dark purple Stripe 8: 5 rounds dark grey Then work with grey until finished measurements. INCREASE TIP: Inc 1 st by working 2 sts in the same st. DECREASE TIP: Dec before marker as follows: Work until 2 sts remain before marker, K 2 tog. Dec after marker as follows: Work until marker, slip 1 st as if to K, K 1, psso. ---------------------------------------------------------- MITTEN: Work piece in the round on double pointed needles with Lima. Cast on 60-64-64 sts on double pointed needles size 4.5 mm with dark grey. Work entire mitten in stocking st and STRIPES - see explanation above. When piece measures 3 cm, dec 4 sts evenly (dec by K 2 tog). Repeat dec every 1½ cm 3-3-2 more times = 44-48-52 sts. REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION When piece measures approx. 8-8-7 cm, insert 1 marker in the 22nd-24th-26th st on round (= marks the thumb). Then inc 1 st on each side of st with marker, repeat in on outside of the inc sts every 4th round 5-6-7 more times - READ INCREASE TIP = 56-62-68 sts. After last inc, slip the inc sts + st with marker + 1 st in each side of these sts on a stitch holder for thumb = 15-17-19 thumb sts. Cast on 3 new sts behind the thumb sts = 44-48-52 sts. Piece measures approx. 16-17-18 cm. Continue in stocking st in the round over these sts. When piece measures 12 cm (measured from the cast on sts behind thumb), insert 2 markers as follows: Insert 1st marker in the 1st st and 2nd marker in the 23rd-25th-27th st. On next round dec before and after both markers - SEE DECREASE TIP (= 4 sts dec). Repeat dec every other round 3-4-5 more times and then every round 4 times = 12 sts. Cut the yarn and pull it through the remaining sts, tighten tog and fasten. THUMB: Continue stripes as on mitten. Slip the 15-17-19 thumb sts on to double pointed needles size 4.5 mm and pick up 3 sts in the 3 cast on sts from hand = 18-20-22 sts. Work in the round on double pointed needles in stocking st. When thumb measures approx. 6-6½-7 cm from thumb gusset, dec 3 sts evenly (dec by K 2 tog) = 15-17-19 sts. Work 3 rounds. On next round, dec 5-7-7 sts evenly = 10-10-12 sts. When piece measures 7½-8-8½ cm, work all sts tog 2 by 2 = 5-5-6 sts. Cut the yarn and pull it through the remaining sts, tighten tog and fasten. Knit another mitten the same way. FELTING: Turn the mitten inside-out and place a plastic bag inside the thumb to avoid it felting together. Fasten it with a safety pin - NOTE: Fasten the pin vertically down towards tip of thumb to make it easy to remove after felting. Turn the mitten out again so that it is felted with RS outwards. Then place the mittens in the washing machine with a detergent without enzymes and optical bleach. Wash at 40 degrees with normal spin but no pre-wash. After wash shape the mittens to the right measurements while still wet and leave to dry flat. At subsequent wash, wash the mittens at regular wool programme. AFTER FELTING: If the piece is not felted enough and is too big: Wash the piece one more time in the washing machine while it is still wet add a terry towel that measures approx. 50 x 70 cm - NOTE: Do not use a short program. If the piece has been felted too much and is too small: While the piece is still wet stretch it to the correct measurements, if the piece is dry, make sure to soak it first. Remember: All subsequent washes are as a normal wool garment. |
