Hi, I am interested in this pattern, but have a question: The pattern requires needles Nr. 3 and 4.5, but noticed that the suggested needle size for "Nepal" is 5.5 mm diameter. Which one is the correct needle size? Does it work if you use a much thinner needle for thicker yarn? all the best, E.

Dear Esther, the recommended needle size in a yarn is for general use. However, we can also use smaller or larger needles, depending on the desired gauge and texture. For this pattern, we have used the 3mm and 4.5mm needles. The 3mm needles are only for the rib sections, while the 4.5mm needles are not that much thinner than the recommended size and will be the mainly used needles, to get a tighter stocking stitch than the one obtained with 5.5mm needles. Happy knitting!

------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- RAGLAN: Increase 1 stitch by making 1 yarn over, which is worked as follows on the next round: BEFORE RAGLAN-STITCHES (yarn over twists to the right): Slip the yarn-over purl-wise from the left to the right needle, place it back onto the left needle by inserting the left needle through the back (the yarn over is now the other way round). Knit through the stitch loop that lies on the front of the needle (avoids a hole). Work the new stitches in stocking stitch. AFTER RAGLAN-STITCHES (yarn over twists to the left): Knit through the stitch loop that lies on the back of the needle (avoids a hole). Work the new stitches in stocking stitch. INCREASE TIP: When increasing evenly on the first round of rib, it is important to increase in the stitches that will subsequently be purled, so the knitted stitches continue neatly from the stocking stitch. SLEEVE TIP: When knitting up stitches under the sleeve, you can get a small hole in the transition between stitches on the body and sleeve. This hole can be closed by picking up the strand between 2 stitches and working this strand twisted together with the first stitch between body and sleeve. DECREASE TIP: Decrease 1 stitch on each side of the marker-thread as follows: Work until there are 3 stitches left before the marker-thread, knit 2 together, knit 2 (marker-thread sits between these 2 stitches), slip 1 stitch knit-wise, knit 1 and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch (2 stitches decreased). ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- JUMPER – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The pattern uses both long and short needles; start with the length which fits the number of stitches and change when necessary. The neck and yoke are worked in the round with circular needle, top down and from the right back shoulder, while increasing for raglan. When the yoke is finished, it is divided for the body and sleeves and the body is continued in the round, while the sleeves wait. The sleeves are worked top down, in the round. NECK: Cast on 88-96-96-96-104-104-112 stitches with circular needle size 4.5 mm and DROPS Nepal or DROPS Alaska. Change to circular needle size 3 mm (casting on with a larger needle size makes the cast-on edge more elastic). Work rib in the round as follows: Purl 1, * knit 2, purl 2 *, work from *-* until there are 3 stitches left, knit 2 and purl 1. Continue the rib until the neck measures 9-9-9-10-10-11-11 cm. Now fold the neck double to the inside, and work 1 more round of rib while working every 2nd stitch together with every 2nd stitch from the cast-on edge. The double neck measures approx. 4-4-4-4½-4½-5-5 cm. The round begins on the right back shoulder. Insert 1 marker after the first 32-34-34-34-38-38-40 stitches (approx. mid-front), the piece is now measured from here. YOKE: Change to circular needle size 4.5 mm. Insert 4 markers as follows, without working the stitches and inserting each marker between 2 stitches (raglan-stitches). You increase for raglan on each side of the raglan-stitches. Insert marker-1 at the beginning of the round, count 20-20-20-20-24-24-24 stitches (= sleeve), insert marker-2 before the next stitch, count 24-28-28-28-28-28-32 stitches (= front piece), insert marker-3 before the next stitch, count 20-20-20-20-24-24-24 stitches (= sleeve), insert marker-4 before the next stitch, there are 24-28-28-28-28-28-32 stitches left after the last marker (= back piece). Work stocking stitch in the round and increase for RAGLAN on each side of the raglan-stitches – read explanation above for how to increase. Work as follows: ROUND 1: Knit and increase for raglan on each side of the raglan-stitches (8 increased stitches). NOTE: At the beginning of the round, increase after 1 stitch has been worked after marker-1, at the end of the round increase when there is 1 stitch left before marker-1. ROUND 2: Knit (yarn overs worked as described under RAGLAN). Work ROUNDS 1 and 2 a total of 5-6-8-9-17-13-13 times (10-12-16-18-34-26-26 rounds worked) = 128-144-160-168-240-208-216 stitches. Remember to maintain the knitting tension. Now increase as follows: ROUND 1: Knit and increase for raglan on each side of the raglan-stitches (8 increased stitches). ROUND 2: Knit (yarn overs worked as before). ROUND 3: Knit and increase for raglan only on the front and back pieces, i.e., after markers 2 and 4 and before markers 3 and 1; do not increase on the sleeves (4 increased stitches). ROUND 4: Knit (yarn overs worked as before). Work ROUNDS 1 to 4 a total of 10-10-10-11-7-11-12 times (40-40-40-44-28-44-48 rounds worked: 10-10-10-11-7-11-12 increases in height on the sleeves and 20-20-20-22-14-22-24 increases in height on the front and back pieces) = 248-264-280-300-324-340-360 stitches. All increases for raglan are finished: a total of 25-26-28-31-31-35-37 increases in height on the front and back pieces and 15-16-18-20-24-24-25 increases in height on the sleeves. Now divide for the body and sleeves. DIVIDE FOR BODY AND SLEEVES When dividing, the raglan-stitches will be on the front and back pieces. Knit 1-1-1-1-5-5-5 (these stitches belong to the back piece), place the next 48-50-54-58-62-62-64 stitches on a stitch holder/thread for the sleeve, cast on 10-12-14-16-18-20-22 stitches (mid-under the sleeve), knit 76-82-86-92-100-108-116 = (front piece), place the next 48-50-54-58-62-62-64 stitches on a stitch holder/thread for the sleeve, cast on 10-12-14-16-18-20-22 stitches (mid-under the sleeve), knit the last 75-81-85-91-95-103-111 stitches (= back piece). The body and sleeves are finished separately. BODY: = 172-188-200-216-236-256-276 stitches. Insert 1 marker in the middle of the 10-12-14-16-18-20-22 cast-on stitches under one sleeve. Work to the marker; the round now begins here. Continue stocking stitch in the round until the piece measures 46-48-50-52-52-54-56 cm from the marker mid-front. Change to circular needle size 3 mm. Work rib (knit 2 and purl 2), AT THE SAME TIME increase 32-32-36-36-40-44-48 stitches evenly on the first round – read INCREASE TIP = 204-220-236-252-276-300-324 stitches. When the rib measures 5-5-5-5-6-6-6 cm, cast off with rib. The jumper measures approx. 51-53-55-57-58-60-62 cm from the marker mid-front and 56-58-60-62-64-66-68 cm from the shoulder. SLEEVES: Place the 48-50-54-58-62-62-64 sleeve-stitches from one thread/stitch holder onto circular needle size 4.5 mm and knit up 1 stitch in each of the 10-12-14-16-18-20-22 cast-on stitches under the sleeve – read SLEEVE TIP = 58-62-68-74-80-82-86 stitches. Insert a marker-thread in the middle of the 10-12-14-16-18-20-22 new stitches under the sleeve. The round starts by the marker-thread. Work stocking stitch in the round. AT THE SAME TIME, after 1 round, decrease mid-under the sleeve – read DECREASE TIP as follows: Decrease 2 stitches every 2nd round 1-2-2-2-2-2-2 times, then 2 stitches every 5-5-7-5-4-4-3 cm 2-2-4-6-8-8-9 times = 52-54-56-58-60-62-64 stitches. Continue working until the sleeve measures 39-38-38-36-36-34-32 cm from the division. Change to double pointed needles size 3 mm. Work rib (knit 2 and purl 2), AT THE SAME TIME increase 12-10-12-10-12-10-12 stitches evenly on the first round = 64-64-68-68-72-72-76 stitches. When the rib measures 6-6-6-6-7-7-7 cm, cast off with rib. The sleeve measures approx. 45-44-44-42-43-41-39 cm from the division. |
