After I cast off the 29 stitches for the front neck, the next row says :- Bind off at the neck edge on every other row: 3 sts 1 time, 2 sts 2 times, 1 stitch 3 times. Surely this must mean 3 sts each side, etc. otherwise the decreases do not work. Thank you

Hi Breige, Yes, after you have cast off the 29 stitches for the neckline, you continue casting off at the beginning of each row (by the neckline on each side), first 3 stitches each side, then 2 stitches two times each side and 1 stitch three times each side. Happy knitting!

I now have reached 35) cm , knit the next row as follows: 5 steek sts, 54 (58-62) sts front, bind off 12 (14-16) sts for armhole, 109 (117-125) sts back, bind off 12 (14-16) sts for armhole, 54 (58-62) sts front. On the next row cast on 5 sts over the bound-off sts on either side. (These sts are for the steeks and are not knitted into the pattern). I am not understanding this part, Where exactly is the steeks, Why do i need them here and why am I not knitting back and front separately. Thanks

Dear Mrs Breige, you first cast off for armhole: 5 steek sts, 62 sts for front piece, cast off 16 sts for armhole, work 125 sts for back piece, cast off 16 sts for armhole and work 62 sts for front piece, on next row work 5 steek sts, 62 sts front piece, cast on 5 new sts = steek sts, work 125 sts back piece, cast on 5 new sts - steek sts, work 62 sts front piece. If you rather want to avoid steek stitches for armhole, just divide piece for each front/back piece and cast on 1 stitch on the sides for seam allowance and continue back and forth. Happy knitting!

Gauge: 23 sts and 30 rows on larger needles in pattern = 10 x 10 cm . Pattern: See chart. One chart equals one repeat of the pattern. Pattern is seen from the right side and is knit entirely in stockinette stitch. Border: Knit 4 cm in stockinette stitch, purl 1 row for folding edge, knit 4 cm in stockinette stitch. BODY Cardigan is knit in the round with steeks at the center front and underarms. Cast on 243 (263-283) sts (includes 1 edge stitch on either side at the center front) on medium circular needles with black and knit back and forth for 4 cm in stockinette stitch ending with a right side row. Purl the next (RS) row for the folding edge. Measure the work from the purl row. Change to larger circular needles and cast on 3 sts at the center front. These sts + edge sts = 5 sts for the steek and are not knitted into the pattern. 241 (261-281) sts + 5 steek sts. Join the work, being careful not to twist the sts and knit 1 repeat of Pattern 1. Change to Pattern 2 and repeat this pattern until the work measures 16 (18-19) cm . Change to Pattern 3 and knit until the work measures approximately 53.5 (55.5-56.5) cm . Adjust for pattern. When the work measures 33 (35-35) cm , knit the next row as follows: 5 steek sts, 54 (58-62) sts front, bind off 12 (14-16) sts for armhole, 109 (117-125) sts back, bind off 12 (14-16) sts for armhole, 54 (58-62) sts front. On the next row cast on 5 sts over the bound-off sts on either side. (These sts are for the steeks and are not knitted into the pattern). Bind off for armholes on either side of the 5 steek sts on either side on every row: 1 stitch 6 (9-12) times, on every other row: 1 stitch 3 (3-3) times, and on every 4th row: 1 stitch 2 (2-3) times. 86 (88-88)+ 5 sts front, 87 (89-89) sts back. When the work measures 49 (51-52) cm , bind off the center 18 (20-20) sts + the 5 steek sts in the front for the neck. Knit the rest of the work back and forth on the needle . Bind off at the neck edge on every other row: 3 sts 1 time, 2 sts 2 times, 1 stitch 3 times. After Pattern 3 knit Pattern 2 for 2 cm and then knit Pattern 4. When the work measures 54 (56-57) cm , bind off the center 35 (37-37) sts in the back for the neck. Then bind off 2 sts on either side of the neck edge on the next row. Bind off when the work measures approximately 56 (58-59) cm . Sleeves: Cast on 50 (50-52) sts on medium double pointed needles with black. Join, being careful not to twist the sts. Place a marker at the join and knit 4 cm in stockinette stitch. Purl 1 row for folding edge. Measure the work from here. Change to larger double pointed needles and knit Pattern 1 and then Pattern 2 upwards until the work measures approximately 35 (33-33) cm At the same time, when the work measures 6 cm , inc 1 st on either side of the marker 26 (26-27) times. For S+M - every 4th row. For L - alternately every 3rd and 4th row. 102 (102-106) sts. After Pattern 2 knit Pattern 5, Being careful to get a repeat directly centered on the sleeve. Then knit Pattern 6. After Pattern 6 knit Pattern 2 upwards to finished dimensions. When the work measures 44 (42-41) cm , put 5 (6-6) sts on either side of the marker on holder and knit the rest back and forth on the needle . Continue to put sts on the holder for sleeve tops on each side on every other row: 4 sts 1 time, 3 sts 1 time, 2 sts 2 time, 1 stitch 9 (12-15) times, 2 sts 2 times, 4 sts 2 times. The work measures approximately 56 (56-57) cm . Put all sts on the sleeve top back on the needle and knit for 2 cm in reverse stockinette stitch back and forth on the needle for a seam allowance. Bind off loosely. Assembly: Machine sew a marker thread down into the center of the steek sts on both underarms and at the center front. Sew two machine seams on either side of the center thread 2 stitch to each side. Cut up for armholes and at the center front. Sew shoulder seams. Pick up approximately 100-110 sts along the left front on smaller needles with black and knit Border. Bind off. Repeat along the right front, but after 1 cm knit 6 buttonholes evenly distributed on the row. 1 buttonhole = bind off 2 sts and increase 2 new sts over the bound-off sts on the next row. Remember to knit buttonholes on the folding edge. Pick up approximately 100-110 sts around the neck on smaller double pointed needles with black and knit back and forth on the needle as follows: knit 2 cm » in stockinette stitch, purl 1 row for folding edge, knit 2 cm » in stockinette stitch, bind off. Fold edges over double against the wrong side and sew. Sew the sleeves to the body from the right side as follows: Sew alternately a stitch in the last row of plain knitting on the sleeve before the seam allowance and a stitch on the body after the machine seam. Turn the cardigan inside out and sew the seam allowance from the sleeve over the cutting-edge on the body by hand. Sew on the buttons. |
