Gauge: 23 sts and 30 rows on larger needles in pattern = 10 x 10 cm .

Pattern: See chart. One chart equals one repeat of the pattern.
Pattern is seen from the right side and is knit entirely in stockinette stitch.

Border: Knit 4 cm in stockinette stitch, purl 1 row for folding edge, knit 4 cm in stockinette stitch.

BODY
Cardigan is knit in the round with steeks at the center front and underarms.
Cast on 243 (263-283) sts (includes 1 edge stitch on either side at the center front) on medium circular needles with black and knit back and forth for 4 cm in stockinette stitch ending with a right side row. Purl the next (RS) row for the folding edge. Measure the work from the purl row.
Change to larger circular needles and cast on 3 sts at the center front. These sts + edge sts = 5 sts for the steek and are not knitted into the pattern. 241 (261-281) sts + 5 steek sts. Join the work, being careful not to twist the sts and knit 1 repeat of Pattern 1. Change to Pattern 2 and repeat this pattern until the work measures 16 (18-19) cm . Change to Pattern 3 and knit until the work measures approximately 53.5 (55.5-56.5) cm . Adjust for pattern.
When the work measures 33 (35-35) cm , knit the next row as follows: 5 steek sts, 54 (58-62) sts front, bind off 12 (14-16) sts for armhole, 109 (117-125) sts back, bind off 12 (14-16) sts for armhole, 54 (58-62) sts front. On the next row cast on 5 sts over the bound-off sts on either side. (These sts are for the steeks and are not knitted into the pattern).
Bind off for armholes on either side of the 5 steek sts on either side on every row: 1 stitch 6 (9-12) times, on every other row: 1 stitch 3 (3-3) times, and on every 4th row: 1 stitch 2 (2-3) times. 86 (88-88)+ 5 sts front, 87 (89-89) sts back.
When the work measures 49 (51-52) cm , bind off the center 18 (20-20) sts + the 5 steek sts in the front for the neck. Knit the rest of the work back and forth on the needle . Bind off at the neck edge on every other row: 3 sts 1 time, 2 sts 2 times, 1 stitch 3 times. After Pattern 3 knit Pattern 2 for 2 cm and then knit Pattern 4.
When the work measures 54 (56-57) cm , bind off the center 35 (37-37) sts in the back for the neck. Then bind off 2 sts on either side of the neck edge on the next row. Bind off when the work measures approximately 56 (58-59) cm .

Sleeves: Cast on 50 (50-52) sts on medium double pointed needles with black. Join, being careful not to twist the sts. Place a marker at the join and knit 4 cm in stockinette stitch. Purl 1 row for folding edge. Measure the work from here. Change to larger double pointed needles and knit Pattern 1 and then Pattern 2 upwards until the work measures approximately 35 (33-33) cm
At the same time, when the work measures 6 cm , inc 1 st on either side of the marker 26 (26-27) times.
For S+M - every 4th row.
For L - alternately every 3rd and 4th row.
102 (102-106) sts.
After Pattern 2 knit Pattern 5, Being careful to get a repeat directly centered on the sleeve. Then knit Pattern 6. After Pattern 6 knit Pattern 2 upwards to finished dimensions.
When the work measures 44 (42-41) cm , put 5 (6-6) sts on either side of the marker on holder and knit the rest back and forth on the needle . Continue to put sts on the holder for sleeve tops on each side on
every other row: 4 sts 1 time, 3 sts 1 time, 2 sts 2 time, 1 stitch 9 (12-15) times, 2 sts 2 times, 4 sts 2 times. The work measures approximately 56 (56-57) cm .
Put all sts on the sleeve top back on the needle and knit for 2 cm in reverse stockinette stitch back and forth on the needle for a seam allowance. Bind off loosely.

Assembly: Machine sew a marker thread down into the center of the steek sts on both underarms and at the center front. Sew two machine seams on either side of the center thread 2 stitch to each side. Cut up for armholes and at the center front. Sew shoulder seams.
Pick up approximately 100-110 sts along the left front on smaller needles with black and knit Border. Bind off. Repeat along the right front, but after 1 cm knit 6 buttonholes evenly distributed on the row. 1 buttonhole = bind off 2 sts and increase 2 new sts over the bound-off sts on the next row. Remember to knit buttonholes on the folding edge.
