I am very pleased with the result. I used self-patterning yarn to create an 'All Creatures Great and Small'-inspired tank top. I am not an experienced knitter, and I found it helpful to ask ChatGPT to explain the more technical parts of the pattern, like the decreases for the armholes and picking up stitches at the end for the ribbed edges. As an inexperienced knitter, I prefer the pattern to describe the steps in more detail, row by row.

The pattern says stocking stitch, which means 1 row is knit and 1 row purl, but the pop up also says when in round, then all rows knit. Can you please advise if all rows will be knit or alternate rows Thanks
13.07.2026 - 09:57DROPS Design answered:
Hi Sandhya, Stocking stitch in the round on the body is "knit all rounds". When you have divided for the back and front pieces, each of these is continued back and forth. Then you knit 1 row and purl 1 row for stocking stitch. Regards, Drops team.

Hi, for a 7-8 year size, how many balls (100 gms) is needed for this vest ? Thanks
02.07.2026 - 17:46DROPS Design answered:
Dear Sandhya, you will find the requested amount of yarn required for each size on top of the page under tab "Pattern"; so in size 7/8 you need 100 g DROPS Air / 50 g a ball Air = 2 balls. If you like to work with another yarn, read more here. Happy knitting!

Hallo!

I recently asked about the bind off instructions for the Spring Creek slipover. They were slightly ambiguous but after re-reading them several times I think I understand now. At the beginning of the row bind off 2, begin the next row and bind off 2, next row bind off 2, next row bind off 2, next row bind off 1, etc. Hopefully this is what you meant but confirmation would be appreciated. Thank you for your patience.

Thank you for answering my last question. I have a new one. In the Spring Creek slipover pattern it says bind off 2 sts two times and 1 st. 3 times. I don't understand the difference. Wouldn't you just say bind off 3 sts four times? Is there a video showing the difference between binding off 1 st and binding off 2 sts? Thank you
07.03.2026 - 18:28DROPS Design answered:
Dear Mrs Johnson, when working back and front piece separately back and forth you will decrease for armholes first 2 stitches at the beginning of next 4 rows (from both RS and WS), ie 2 sts 2 times in each side; then cast off 1 stitch at the beginning of next 6 rows (from both RS and WS), ie 1 st 3 times in each side. You have then cast off (2x2 + 3x1)= 7 sts in each side, 14 sts in total =56-14= 42 sts remain. Happy knitting!

Is there any way to get this pattern in standard measurements instead of metric?
13.02.2026 - 04:16DROPS Design answered:
Hi Robin, There is a language drop-down menu to the right of the main photo. If you choose US English it will give you inches as well as cms. Regards, Drops Team.

------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- DECREASE TIP (evenly spaced): To work out how to decrease evenly, count the total number of stitches on needle (e.g. 136 stitches) and divide by the number of decreases to be made (e.g. 12) = 11.3. In this example decrease by knitting together approx. each 10th and 11th stitch. CASTING-OFF TIP: To avoid the cast-off edge being tight you can cast off with a larger size needle. If the edge is still tight, make 1 yarn over after approx. each 6th stitch at the same time as casting off; the yarn overs are cast off as normal stitches. ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- VEST – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The body is worked in the round with circular needle, bottom up. Stitches are cast off for the armholes and the front and back pieces finished separately, back and forth on the needle. The shoulder seams are sewn together and ribbed sleeve-edges and neck are worked to finish. BODY: Cast on 136-140-148-156-164-172 stitches with circular needle size 4 mm and DROPS Air. Knit 1 round, then work rib in the round (knit 2, purl 2) for 3 cm. Knit 1 round where you decrease 12-12-12-12-16-16 stitches evenly spaced – read DECREASE TIP = 124-128-136-144-148-156 stitches. Insert 1 marker at the beginning of the round; allow the marker to follow your work onwards, it marks the one side and the beginning of the round. Change to circular needle size 5 mm and continue with stocking stitch in the round. REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION! When the piece measures 22-25-28-31-33-35 cm, cast off for the armholes on the next round as follows: Start 3 stitches before the marker, cast off 6 stitches, work 56-58-62-66-68-72 stitches (= front piece), cast off 6 stitches and work 56-58-62-66-68-72 stitches (= back piece). Place the stitches from the front piece on a thread or extra needle and work the back piece. BACK PIECE: Continue with stocking stitch back and forth and cast off for the armholes at the beginning of each row as follows: 2 stitches 2-1-1-1-1-1 times and 1 stitch 3-3-3-4-4-4 times on both sides = 42-48-52-54-56-60 stitches. Continue with stocking stitch. When the piece measures 38-42-46-50-53-56 cm, cast off the middle 20-22-24-24-26-26 stitches for the neck and each shoulder is finished separately. Continue working and cast off 1 stitch on the next row from the neck = 10-12-13-14-14-16 stitches. Work until the piece measures 40-44-48-52-55-58 cm. Cast off. Work the other shoulder in the same way. FRONT PIECE: Continue with stocking stitch back and forth and cast off for the armholes at the beginning of each row as follows: 2 stitches 2-1-1-1-1-1 times and 1 stitch 3-3-3-4-4-4 times on both sides = 42-48-52-54-56-60 stitches. When the piece measures 34-38-41-45-47-50 cm, place the middle 8-10-10-10-12-12 stitches on a thread and each shoulder is finished separately. Continue working and cast off at the beginning of each row from the neck as follows: 2 stitches 2-2-2-2-2-2 times and 1 stitch 3-3-4-4-4-4 times = 10-12-13-14-14-16 stitches. Work until the piece measures 40-44-48-52-55-58 cm. Cast off. Work the other shoulder in the same way. ASSEMBLY: Sew the shoulder seams. SLEEVE-EDGES: Start from the right side at the bottom of the armhole and knit up inside 1 stitch 64-68-72-76-80-84 stitches around the armhole with double pointed needles/short circular needle size 4 mm and DROPS Air – the number of stitches should be divisible by 4. Work rib in the round (knit 2, purl 2) for 2-2-2-3-3-3 cm. Cast off with knit over knit and purl over purl – read CASTING-OFF TIP. Work the other sleeve-edge in the same way. NECK: Start from the right side on the one shoulder and knit up 56-60-68-68-72-72 stitches around the neck (including the stitches on the thread in front), inside 1 stitch with double pointed needles/short circular needle size 4 mm and DROPS Air – the number of stitches should be divisible by 4. Work rib in the round (knit 2, purl 2) for 2-2-2-3-3-3 cm. Cast off with knit over knit and purl over purl – remember CASTING-OFF TIP. |
