I am list on the first row of the leg. What do you mean “twist a little so it starts mid back”. How are you “twisting” it??

El patrón en español está mal, el número de puntos, de cadenetas y de vueltas es superior al del patrón en inglés, y como resultado no sale bien la alpaca. Por favor, corríjanlo. Gracias

Yes, duh, I downloaded the British, not the American! How funny that British single crochet is the US double! But I redid it with single, and made four legs instead of two, so it actually stands up! Then I made the blanket knitted, all red, and embroidered my granddaughter’s name on it. We have an alpaca farm down the road from us, and had walked there after Thanksgiving with her, and she was thrilled! Thanks for the idea and pattern, and sorry I was so clueless!

I think this pattern would work were it written as pictured, with single crochet rather than double. Single crochet would have a similar width, but less height. As the pattern is written, with double crochet, the neck is too long, body too square. I’m going to start over and make it with single crochet. Whoever translated this to English (and thank you for doing this) made a mistake. And of course with the correct terminology, the trebles need to go down to doubles, etc.

Dear Mrs Shamel, this pattern is worked with single crochets (= US crochet terminology) which are also called double crochets (= UK crochet terminology). Make sure you are following the appropriate terminology by choosing the language under photo. Happy crocheting!

------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- CROCHET TIP: Crochet round and round without stopping. The marker thread shows the beginning and end of the round – do not work slip stitches at the end of each round. DECREASE TIP-1: 3 treble crochets are worked together into 1 treble crochet as follows: * Make 1 yarn over, insert the hook into the next stitch, pick up the strand, make 1 yarn over and pull the strand through the first 2 loops on the hook *, work from *-* a total of 3 times, make 1 yarn over and pull the strand through all 4 loops on the hook (= 2 treble crochets decreased). DECREASE TIP-2: 2 double crochets are worked together into 1 double crochet as follows: * Insert the hook in the next stitch, pick up the strand *, work from *-* a total of 2 times, make 1 yarn over and pull the strand through all 3 loops on the hook (= 1 double crochet decreased). STRIPES: Work stripes on the blanket in the following order: ROW 1: Goldenrod or cerise ROW 2: Cerise or dark purple ROW 3: Ruby red or pistachio ROW 4: Sea green or grey blue ROW 5: Goldenrod ROW 6: Cerise or dark purple ROW 7: Pistachio or cerise ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- ALPACA – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The piece is worked in the round from the top of the head and down, then the body, tail and 2 legs. The Alpaca is filled with wadding and sewn together under the body. The top of the head is crocheted together and 2 ears are worked to finish. HEAD: Work 11 chain stitches with hook size 3.5 mm and off-white or light grey. ROUND 1: Form the chain stitches into a ring by working 2 double crochets in the first chain stitch, then work 1 double crochet in each of the 10 remaining chain stitches = 12 double crochets. Insert 1 marker thread at the beginning of the round. Work in a spiral – read CROCHET TIP! ROUND 2: Work 1 double crochet in each stitch. ROUND 3: Work 1 double crochet in each of the next 2 stitches, 1 half treble crochet in the next stitch, 1 treble crochet + 2 double-treble crochets + 1 treble crochet in the next stitch, 1 half treble crochet in the next stitch and 1 double crochet in each of the last 7 stitches – you have now increased 3 stitches for the nose = 15 stitches. REMEMBER THE CROCHET TENSION! ROUNDS 4 and 5: Work 1 double crochet in each stitch. ROUND 6: Work 1 double crochet in each of the first 3 stitches, * work 3 treble crochets together - read DECREASE TIP-1 *, work from *-* a total of 2 times and work 1 double crochet in each of the last 6 stitches = 11 stitches. NECK: Work 6 rounds with 1 double crochet in each stitch. BODY: Work 12 new chain stitches at the beginning of the round, turn the piece and work these chain stitches back as follows: Skip the first chain stitch, * work 2 double crochets in the next stitch *, work from *-* a total of 2 times (= tail), 1 double crochet in each of the next 9 chain stitches, work 1 double crochet in each of the 11 stitches around the neck and then work the double crochets towards the tail in the same row of chain stitches but on the opposite side as follows: 1 double crochet in each of the 8 chain stitches towards the tail and 2 double crochets in the last chain stitch under the tail = 30 stitches for the body. The round now begins and ends under the tail. Lift the tail so you can work the body in the round. Work 9 rounds with 1 double crochet in each stitch. BACK LEG: Lay the piece so the 2 long-sides are together, twist the piece a little so the round starts mid-back. Now work in the first 6 and the last 6 stitches on the round as follows: ROUND 1: Work 1 double crochet in each of the first 6 stitches, skip 18 stitches, work 1 double crochet in each of the last 6 stitches = 12 double crochets. Insert 1 marker thread at the beginning of the round. The piece is continued in a spiral as follows: ROUNDS 1 to 4: Work 1 double crochet in each stitch. ROUND 5: Work all stitches together 2 and 2 – read DECREASE TIP-2 = 6 stitches. ROUND 6 and 7: Work 1 double crochet in each stitch. Cut the strand. Pull the strand together at the bottom of the leg and fasten well. FRONT LEG: Now work the 12 stitches on the other side of the Alpaca. ROUND 1: Skip the 3 double crochets closest to the back leg, work 1 double crochet in each of the next 12 double crochets (there are 3 double crochets left towards the back leg on this side). Insert 1 marker thread at the beginning of the round. Continue working in a spiral as follows: ROUNDS 1 to 4: Work 1 double crochet in each stitch. ROUND 5: Work all stitches together 2 and 2 = 6 stitches. ROUNDS 6 and 7: Work 1 double crochet in each stitch. Cut the strand. Pull the strand together at the bottom of the leg and fasten well. ASSEMBLY: Fill the Alpaca with wadding. Sew together the opening between the legs. Embroider the eyes, nose and mouth with a left-over of brown – see photo for positioning and shape. Fold the hole on the top of the head flat with the face forwards. Crochet a row through both layers and work 1 ear on each side as follows: Work 1 slip stitch in the outermost stitch (through both layers) on the one side, 4 chain stitches, 1 treble crochet in the same stitch, 4 chain stitches, 1 slip stitch in the next stitch (through both layers), (= first ear), 1 double crochet in each stitch until there is 2 stitches left, 1 slip stitch in the second to last stitch (through both layers), 4 chain stitches, 1 treble crochet in the last stitch, 4 chain stitches and finish with 1 slip stitch in the same stitch (= second ear). Cut and fasten the strands. LOOP: Cut a strand of approx. 12 cm, pull it through a couple of stitches on the back of the head. Fold the strand double to make a loop and tie a knot in the end. BLANKET: The blanket is worked back and forth. Work 16 chain stitches with hook size 3.5 mm and pistachio or grey blue. Now continue the blanket with STRIPES – read description above, and 1 double crochet in each stitch. Cut the strands when you have worked 7 rows. Leave approx. 3 cm strands-ends as fringes. Tie the strands together 2 and 2. Trim the fringes to approx. 1 cm in length. Sew the blanket to the back of the Alpaca with a couple of small stitches from underneath. |
