SLIPPER: The slipper is worked in one and sewn tog mid front and mid back when finished, beg at the top of leg. Cast on 24-25-26 sts on needle size 8 mm with pastel pink. K 5 rows (1st row = RS). REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION Then work in stocking st. AT THE SAME TIME on 1st row in stocking st, dec 2 sts evenly = 22-23-24 sts. When piece measures 17-17-19 cm, switch to light grey and cast on sts for foot at the end of every row from RS: 2 sts 3-4-6 times and 1 st 3-3-2 times = 31-34-38 sts. When piece measures 50-53-55 cm, dec at beg on every row from WS: 1 st 3-3-2 times and 2 sts 3-4-6 times = 22-23-24 sts. Now switch back to pastel pink and continue with leg until piece measures 73-75-83 cm. P 1 row from WS while AT THE SAME TIME inc 2 sts evenly = 24-25-26 sts. K 5 rows (1st row = RS). Loosely cast off. ASSEMBLY: See figure. Fold slipper double, WS against WS and sew tog a against b in outer loops of edge sts (= mid back) and A against B (= front of foot and up to leg). Turn the slipper inside out - this is now RS. FELTING: The piece can be felted either in the washing machine or the tumble dryer – read description below. Remember: Subsequent washes are as for a normal wool garment. IN WASHING MACHINE: Washing machines will vary when felting. If the piece is not felted enough, it can be felted again. If it is felted too much, it can be stretched to the correct size while still wet. DO THE FOLLOWING: Lay the piece in the washing machine, using a programme of approx. 40 minutes (not a wool programme). Wash at 40 degrees without pre-wash, detergent is optional. After washing, shape the piece while it is still wet. IN TUMBLE DRYER: Felting in a tumble dryer gives good control over the degree of felting. The tumble dryer can be opened during drying to check the size of the piece. If it is not felted enough it can be thoroughly wetted and felted again. If it is felted too much it can be stretched to the correct size while still wet. DO THE FOLLOWING: Lay the piece in water so it becomes completely wet, then place it in the tumble dryer and begin the drying process. Dry to the desired size, checking regularly. TAIL: Make 2 pompoms with off white with an approx. diameter of 5 cm. Sew a pompom mid back on leg. NOSE AND EYES: Sew a nose at the front of toe with pastel pink as follows: Measure approx. 2 cm straight up from mid front and sew 5 stitches on top of each other approx. 2 cm in width. Sew eyes with black as follows: Measure 2.5 cm straight up from the middle of nose, then approx. 3 cm out to the side, and sew one eye with a grafting/kitchener stitch with a length of approx. 1.5 cm from here and diagonally up towards foot (i.e. there is approx. 6 cm between eyes in bottom edge and approx. 8 cm at the top). |
