------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- DECREASE TIP (evenly spaced): To work out how to decrease evenly, count the total number of stitches on needle (e.g. 136 stitches) and divide by the number of decreases to be made (e.g. 12) = 11.3. In this example decrease by knitting together approx. each 10th and 11th stitch. CASTING-OFF TIP: To avoid the cast-off edge being tight you can cast off with a larger size needle. If the edge is still tight, make 1 yarn over after approx. each 6th stitch at the same time as casting off; the yarn overs are cast off as normal stitches. ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- VEST – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The body is worked in the round with circular needle, bottom up. Stitches are cast off for the armholes and the front and back pieces finished separately, back and forth on the needle. The shoulder seams are sewn together and ribbed sleeve-edges and neck are worked to finish. BODY: Cast on 136-140-148-156-164-172 stitches with circular needle size 4 mm and DROPS Air. Knit 1 round, then work rib in the round (knit 2, purl 2) for 3 cm. Knit 1 round where you decrease 12-12-12-12-16-16 stitches evenly spaced – read DECREASE TIP = 124-128-136-144-148-156 stitches. Insert 1 marker at the beginning of the round; allow the marker to follow your work onwards, it marks the one side and the beginning of the round. Change to circular needle size 5 mm and continue with stocking stitch in the round. REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION! When the piece measures 22-25-28-31-33-35 cm, cast off for the armholes on the next round as follows: Start 3 stitches before the marker, cast off 6 stitches, work 56-58-62-66-68-72 stitches (= front piece), cast off 6 stitches and work 56-58-62-66-68-72 stitches (= back piece). Place the stitches from the front piece on a thread or extra needle and work the back piece. BACK PIECE: Continue with stocking stitch back and forth and cast off for the armholes at the beginning of each row as follows: 2 stitches 2-1-1-1-1-1 times and 1 stitch 3-3-3-4-4-4 times on both sides = 42-48-52-54-56-60 stitches. Continue with stocking stitch. When the piece measures 38-42-46-50-53-56 cm, cast off the middle 20-22-24-24-26-26 stitches for the neck and each shoulder is finished separately. Continue working and cast off 1 stitch on the next row from the neck = 10-12-13-14-14-16 stitches. Work until the piece measures 40-44-48-52-55-58 cm. Cast off. Work the other shoulder in the same way. FRONT PIECE: Continue with stocking stitch back and forth and cast off for the armholes at the beginning of each row as follows: 2 stitches 2-1-1-1-1-1 times and 1 stitch 3-3-3-4-4-4 times on both sides = 42-48-52-54-56-60 stitches. When the piece measures 34-38-41-45-47-50 cm, place the middle 8-10-10-10-12-12 stitches on a thread and each shoulder is finished separately. Continue working and cast off at the beginning of each row from the neck as follows: 2 stitches 2-2-2-2-2-2 times and 1 stitch 3-3-4-4-4-4 times = 10-12-13-14-14-16 stitches. Work until the piece measures 40-44-48-52-55-58 cm. Cast off. Work the other shoulder in the same way. ASSEMBLY: Sew the shoulder seams. SLEEVE-EDGES: Start from the right side at the bottom of the armhole and knit up inside 1 stitch 64-68-72-76-80-84 stitches around the armhole with double pointed needles/short circular needle size 4 mm and DROPS Air – the number of stitches should be divisible by 4. Work rib in the round (knit 2, purl 2) for 2-2-2-3-3-3 cm. Cast off with knit over knit and purl over purl – read CASTING-OFF TIP. Work the other sleeve-edge in the same way. NECK: Start from the right side on the one shoulder and knit up 56-60-68-68-72-72 stitches around the neck (including the stitches on the thread in front), inside 1 stitch with double pointed needles/short circular needle size 4 mm and DROPS Air – the number of stitches should be divisible by 4. Work rib in the round (knit 2, purl 2) for 2-2-2-3-3-3 cm. Cast off with knit over knit and purl over purl – remember CASTING-OFF TIP. |
