RAINBOW – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE:
The piece is worked in 6 different colored strips. Each strip is sewn into a tube using Polaris. The strands of Polaris are longer than the tubes, so there are strand-ends at both ends of each tube. The tubes are then sewn together to make the rainbow.
RAINBOW:
STRIP 1:
Cast on 10 stitches with needle size 5 mm = US 8 and purple. Work stockinette stitch back and forth over these stitches for 10 cm = 4”. Bind off. NOTE – leave a longer strand before cutting, which will be used when sewing the strips together in length (applies to all strips).
STRIP 2:
Cast on 10 stitches with needle size 5 mm = US 8 and jeans blue. Work stockinette stitch back and forth over these stitches for 15 cm = 6”. Bind off.
STRIP 3:
Cast on 10 stitches with needle size 5 mm = US 8 and opal green. Work stockinette stitch back and forth over these stitches for 20 cm = 8”. Bind off.
STRIP 4:
Cast on 10 stitches with needle size 5 mm = US 8 and dandelion. Work stockinette stitch back and forth over these stitches for 25 cm = 9 3/4”. Bind off.
STRIP 5:
Cast on 10 stitches with needle size 5 mm = US 8 and apricot. Work stockinette stitch back and forth over these stitches for 30 cm = 11 3/4”. Bind off.
STRIP 6:
Cast on 10 stitches with needle size 5 mm = US 8 and red. Work stockinette stitch back and forth over these stitches for 35 cm = 13 3/4”. Bind off.
ASSEMBLY:
STRIP 1:
= Purple and 10 cm = 4” in length. Cut 4 strands POLARIS, each 25 cm = 9 3/4” in length (= 15 cm = 6” longer than the strip). Lay the 4 strands towards the wrong side of the piece and fold the strip into a tube – sew in the outermost loop of the outermost stitch.
STRIP 2:
= Jeans blue and 15 cm = 6” in length. Cut 4 strands POLARIS, each 30 cm = 11 3/4” in length (= 15 cm = 6” longer than the strip). Lay the 4 strands towards the wrong side of the piece and fold the strip into a tube – sew in the outermost loop of the outermost stitch.
STRIP 3:
= Opal green and 20 cm = 8” in length. Cut 4 strands POLARIS, each 35 cm = 13 3/4” in length (= 15 cm = 6” longer than the strip). Lay the 4 strands towards the wrong side of the piece and fold the strip into a tube – sew in the outermost loop of the outermost stitch.
STRIP 4:
= Dandelion and 25 cm = 9 3/4” in length. Cut 4 strands POLARIS, each 40 cm = 15 3/4” in length (= 15 cm = 6” longer than the strip). Lay the 4 strands towards the wrong side of the piece and fold the strip into a tube – sew in the outermost loop of the outermost stitch.
STRIP 5:
= Apricot and 30 cm = 11 3/4” in length. Cut 4 strands POLARIS, each 45 cm = 17 3/4” in length (= 15 cm = 6” longer than the strip). Lay the 4 strands towards the wrong side of the piece and fold the strip into a tube – sew in the outermost loop of the outermost stitch.
STRIP 6:
= Red and 35 cm = 13 3/4” in length. Cut 4 strands POLARIS, each 50 cm = 19 3/4” in length (= 15 cm = 6” longer than the strip). Lay the 4 strands towards the wrong side of the piece and fold the strip into a tube – sew in the outermost loop of the outermost stitch.
SEWING TOGETHER:
Lay the tubes in the following order of color and size; purple – jeans blue - opal green - dandelion - apricot - red.
HANGING-STRAND:
Cut a strand of approx. 100 cm = 39 3/8” in length. Fold double and tie the 2 loose ends together in a knot. Thread the double-strand on to a needle and sew through the middle of each tube, from the inside purple tube to the outer red tube, allowing the strand to follow upwards.
SHAPING THE RAINBOW:
Now sew at the back of the rainbow so the tubes turn downwards at each end as follows:
Sew a stitch in the cast-on edge of the first tube, then sew a stitch in the cast-on edge of the next tube, continue like this with stitches in the bottom edges until the rainbow has a curved shape.
Hang up and be proud!
