Slippers
Gauge: 9 sts x 14 rows with 2 strands Alaska + 1 strand Vienna in stockinette st = 10 x 10 cm [4" x 4"].

Garter st, when knitting flat: Knit all sts, all rows.

Slippers: Cast on 9 sts with 2 strands Alaska and 1 strand Vienna (=3 strands). Distribute the sts as follows and place markers in between each set of sts: 2 sts upper, 1 side st, 3 sts sole, 1 side st, 2 sts upper. Knit stockinette st, and at the same time inc 1 st each side of side st (= 4 incs per row) every other row. Make incs with a yarn over then on the next row twist the purl st in the yarn over to avoid leaving a hole. Continue increasing until there are 21 sts on needles, then knit even. When the piece measures 10 cm [4"] knit the next row as follows: 5 sts garter st, 11 sts stockinette st, 5 sts garter st. Continue on these sts until the piece measures 28 cm [11"]. Bind off.

Assembly: Sew center seam on the upper part and sew center back seam. Make pompoms and fasten to top of slipper.

Mittens
Gauge: 16 sts x 30 rows in garter st = 10 x 10 cm [4" x 4"].

Garter st, when knitting flat: Knit all sts, all rows.
Garter st, when knitting in the round: *Rnd 1, knit. Rnd 2, purl.* Repeat from * - *.

Continue in garter st until the piece measures 8 cm [3-1/8"], then place 3 markers in work as follows: 1 marker, 1 thumb st, 1 marker (at the side), 20 (23) sts on back of hand, 1 marker (at the side), 13 (16) sts on palm of hand. Measure the piece from here.
Continue in garter st, when the piece measures 1 cm [3/8"] inc 1 st at each side of the thumb st every 3 rows 5-5 times = 44 (50) sts. When the piece measures 6.5 (7) cm [2.5" (2.75")] put the center 11 (11) sts over the thumb on a st holder.
