Bon tricot!

Gauge: 21 sts x 28 rows on larger needles in stockinette st = 10 x 10 cm [4" x 4"] Rib: * K 2, P 2 *, repeat from * - *. Pattern: See charts (1 chart = 1 repeat). The pattern is seen from the right side and is knit entirely in stockinette st. NOTE: On the chart for Pattern 2, there is an error. The five sts at each side should only be knit through the 12th row before repeating as the top two rows do not line up with the bottom of the chart. Body: The cardigan is knit in the round after the rib with steeks for armholes and at center front. Cast on 204-228-240 sts on smaller circular needles with light brown heather. Knit Rib - see instructions above - back and forth on needles keeping 1 st at each edge in garter st. When the rib measures 8-8-8 cm [3-1/8"], P 1 row (right side row). Change to larger circular needles, P 1 row (wrong side row), increasing 3 sts evenly distributed on the row and cast on 3 new sts at center front (the 3 new sts + 2 edge sts = 5 sts center front steek sts – do not knit these in pattern) = 210-234-246 sts. Join the work and knit Pattern 1 one time. On the last row of Pattern 1 inc 2-2-2 sts evenly distributed = 212-236-248 sts. After Pattern 1 is complete, the piece measures approx. 18-18-18 cm [7"]. Establish pattern on the next row as follows: Size S: 5 steek sts, 1 st light brown heather, Pattern 2 (25 sts), Pattern 3 (35 sts), Pattern 2 (25 sts), Pattern 3 (35 sts), Pattern 2 (25 sts), Pattern 3 (35 sts), Pattern 2 (25 sts), 1 st light brown heather. Size M: 5 steek sts, 1 st light brown heather, Pattern 2 (25 sts), Pattern 3 (35 sts), Pattern 2 (25 sts), 7 sts of Pattern 4, 5 sts of Pattern 2, Pattern 3 (35 sts), 5 sts of Pattern 2, 7 sts of Pattern 4, Pattern 2 (25 sts), Pattern 3 (35 sts), Pattern 2 (25 sts), 1 st light brown heather. Size L: 5 steek sts, 1 st light brown heather, Pattern 2 (25 sts), Pattern 3 (35 sts), Pattern 2 (25 sts), Pattern 4 (13 sts), 5 sts of Pattern 2, Pattern 3 (35 sts), 5 sts of Pattern 2, Pattern 4 (13 sts), Pattern 2 (25 sts), Pattern 3 (35 sts), Pattern 2 (25 sts), 1 st light brown heather. Continue with pattern as established to finished dimensions. When the piece measures 31-33-35 cm [12.25" - 13" - 13.75"] knit the next row as follows: 5 steek sts, 47-53-56 sts for the front, bind off 10-10-10 sts for armhole, 93-105-111 sts for the back, bind off 10-10-10 sts for armhole, 47-53-56 sts for the front. On the next row cast on 5 sts over the bound-off armhole sts at each side (these sts are for the armhole steek and are not knit in pattern) = 202-226-238 sts. Dec 1 st for armhole at each side of the 5 steek sts every other row 4-8-8 times = 186-194-206 sts. When the piece measures approx. 46-49-52 cm [18 1/8" - 19.25" - 20.5"] bind off the center 20-20-22 sts + 5 steek sts at center front for neck = 161-169-179 sts and knit back and forth on needles. Bind off at each neck edge every other row: 2 sts 3-3-3 times and 1 st 3-3-3 times = 143-151-161 sts. When the piece measures 50-53-56 cm [19.75" - 20-7/8" - 22"] bind off 31-31-33 sts at center back for the neck. Bind off at each back neck edge every other row: 2 sts 1-1-1 time and 1 st 1-1-1 time = 53-57-61 sts remain on each side. When the piece measures approx. 51-54-57 cm [20" - 21.25" - 22.5"] knit 2 rows with light brown heather over all sts, then bind off all sts. Sleeve: Cast on 52-56-60 sts on smaller double-pointed needles with light brown heather; join and place a marker at the join. Knit Rib for 6 cm [2 3/8"], then P 1 row. Change to larger double pointed needles and knit Pattern 5 one time. At the same time, after the rib inc 1 st each side of marker 4-5-5 times: Size S: every 8 rows Sizes M + L: alternately every 7th and 8th row. After Pattern 5 (the piece measures approx. 20 cm [7-7/8"]) there are 60-66-70 sts on needles, inc 1 st = 61-67-71 sts. Establish pattern on the next row as follows: start on st 13-10-8 of Pattern 2 and knit the remainder of Pattern 2 (13-16-18 sts), Pattern 3 (35 sts), then 13-16-18 sts of Pattern 2 (starting at beginning of chart). Continue with pattern as established, and inc 1 st each side of marker 11-11-11 times: Size S: every 8 rows, Size M + L: alternately every 7th and 8th row = 83-89-93 sts. Knit the increased sts into Pattern 2 as you go along. For Sizes M + L: once there are 25 sts knit in Pattern 2, knit increased sts into Pattern 4 as you go along. When the piece measures approx. 50-49-49 cm [19.75" - 19.25" - 19.25"] separate at marker and knit back and forth on needles. Now put sts on a st holder at each side every other row: 4 sts 1-1-1 time, 3 sts 1-1-1 time, 2 sts 2-3-3 times, 1 st 2-1-1 times, 2 sts 2-3-3 times and 3 sts 2-2-2 times. The piece measures approx. 57-57-57 cm [22.5"] – put all sts back on needles. Knit 2 cm [0.75"] reverse stockinette st with light brown heather, increasing 10-10-10 sts evenly distributed across the first row. This is the seam allowance to cover the cut edges on the body. Bind off. Assembly: Sew a marker thread in the center of the steek sts on either side and at the center front. Sew two machine seams around the marker thread, 1st seam = 1/2 st from the marker thread, 2nd seam = 1/2 st from first seam. Cut steeks for armholes and at the center front. Sew shoulder seams. Button band: Pick up along left front approx. 100 - 116 sts (divisible by 4) on smaller circular needles with light brown heather. Knit back and forth on needles, first P 1 row (right side), then knit rib for 3 cm [1.25"], keeping 1 st at each edge in garter st. P 1 row (right side) for folding edge, then knit 3 cm [1.25"] stockinette st for facing, bind off. Repeat along right front, but after 1 cm [3/8"] make 5-6-6 buttonholes evenly distributed along button band. Put the bottom buttonhole 1 cm [3/8"] from bottom edge and top buttonhole approx. 8-9 cm [3 1/8" - 3.5"] from the top (there will be 1 buttonhole in the neckband). 1 buttonhole = bind off 2 sts, cast on 2 new sts over the bound-off sts on the next row. Make corresponding buttonholes in the facing. Fold button bands against wrong side and stitch down. Neck: Pick up around the neck (including over button bands) approx. 102 - 114 sts (divisible by 4 + 2) on smaller circular needles with light brown heather. P 1 row (right side) then knit rib for 2.5 cm [1"] keeping 1 st at each edge in garter st (center front). After 1 cm [3/8"] make a buttonhole over the others on the button band. P 1 row (right side) for the folding edge and then 2.5 cm [1"] stockinette st for facing - make buttonhole to match, bind off. Fold band against wrong side and stitch down. Sew in sleeves and fold seam allowance over cut edges on Body and stitch down. Sew on buttons. |
