At the point in the pattern when the split at the side ends, it's not clear whether or not I'm supposed to continue the 3 garter stitches on each end (and then 4 with the additional stitch on each end for the edge seam). Or should I just do all stockinette after the split ends?

Hi Lisa, After the split you work 1 ridge back and forth over all stitches (including the edge stitches on each side), then continue with stocking stitch back and forth, with 3 edge stitches in garter stitch on each side. Hope this helps and happy knitting!

TOP: Gauge: 17 sts x 22 rows with 2 strands Silke = 10 x 10 cm in stockinette st. Garter st, when knitting flat: Knit all sts, all rows. Knitting tips (for armhole and neck): All decs are made from right side. At armhole edge dec inside 3 edge sts in garter st and at neckband dec inside 2 edge sts in garter st. Dec 1 st inside edge sts as follows: After edge sts: Slip 1 st as if to knit, K 1, psso. Before edge sts: K 2 tog. Front: Cast on 84-90-98-106-114 sts with 2 strands Cotton Viscose and knit 4 rows garter st. Then knit stockinette st keeping 3 sts in garter st at each side (for edge of split). When the piece measures 10 cm knit 2 rows garter st over all sts with 1 strand Cotton Viscose + 1 strand Silke. Change to 2 strands Silke and continue in stockinette st, keeping 3 sts in garter st at each side. When the piece measures 18 cm end split and cast on 1 new st at each side (edge st for seam allowance) = 86-92-100-108-116 sts. When the piece measures 20 cm dec 1 st at each side every 7-7-7-8-8 cm a total of 6 times = 74-80-88-96-104 sts. Read the entire next section before knitting: Neck opening: When the piece measures 57-59-61-63-66 cm knit 4 rows garter st over the center 4 sts (knit the remaining sts the same as before). Then divide piece at center front for neck split and put half the sts on a st holder. 1st side: continue in stockinette st, keeping 2 sts at neck edge in garter st. Armhole: At the same time when the piece measures 58-60-62-64-66 cm knit 6 rows garter st over the outermost 6-7-8-10-12 sts at side. Then bind off 3-4-5-7-9 sts at side edge. Then dec 1 st at side for armhole - see knitting tips: every other row 4-5-9-10-12 times and then every 4 rows 2-2-1-1-1 times. Neck: At the same time when the piece measures 66-68-71-73-76 cm knit 4 rows garter st over the outermost 9-10-10-11-11 sts at neck edge. Then bind off 7-8-8-9-9 sts at neck edge. Then dec 1 st at neck edge every other row 5 times - see knitting tips. After all armhole and neck shaping is complete, 16 sts remain on shoulder. Keep edge sts in garter st to finished measurements. Bind off when the piece measures 77-80-83-86-89 cm. 2nd side: Put sts on st holder back on needles and knit the same as the first, reversing shaping. Note: begin row 1 from center front. Start by picking up the 1 st in the 1st st from the other side and K tog with the 1st st. This reinforces the lower edge of the neck opening. Back: Cast on and knit the same as the front. Bind off for armhole as on front = 56-58-58-60-60 sts. When the piece measures 74-77-80-83-86 cm knit 4 rows garter st over the center 26-28-28-30-30 sts, then bind off the center 22-24-24-26-26 sts for the neck. On the next row dec 1 st at each neck edge - see knitting tips = 16 sts remain on each shoulder. Keep the edge sts in garter st and bind off when the piece measures 77-80-83-86-89 cm. Assembly: Sew shoulder seams. Sew side seams down to split using edge sts as seam allowance. HAT: Sizes: one-size (approx. 24 cm long) Materials: Garnstudio BOMULL-LIN 53% Egyptian cotton, 47% linen, 50 g./85 m./93 yds 150 gr nr 05, brown. Alternate yarns: * Garnstudio DEN-M-NIT, 100% Egyptian cotton, 50 g/92 m./100 yds * Garnstudio MUSKAT, 100% mercerized Egyptian cotton, 50 g./100 m./109 yards * Garnstudio KARISMA SUPERWASH, 100% superwash wool, 50 g/110 m/120 yards DROPS 3.5 mm [US 4] needles, or size needed to obtain correct gauge. Gauge: 22 sts x 44 rows in garter st = 10 x 10 cm. Garter st, when knitting flat: Knit all sts, all rows. Hat: Cast on 145 sts with double strands of yarn. Take away 1 strand and knit garter st with single strand over all sts. When the piece measures 7 cm dec 28 sts evenly distributed on the row = 117 sts. Continue in garter st. When the piece measures 18 cm dec 9 sts evenly distributed every other row a total of 12 times = 9 sts remain. Pull a strand of yarn through the remaining sts and fasten. Sew hat at center back – sew from right side in outermost sts. |
