---------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATION FOR THE PATTERN: ---------------------------------------------------------- DECREASE TIP-1: Decrease can be done both from right and wrong side, knit stitches together from right side or purl together from wrong side. DECREASE TIP-2: To calculate how to decrease evenly, use the total number of stitches on row (75 stitches) and divide stitches by number of decreases to be done (e.g. 10) = 7.5. In this example work alternately every 6th and 7th stitch and every 7th and 8th stitch together. ---------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ---------------------------------------------------------- FELTED HAT – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: Piece is knitted from the bottom up and back and forth on circular needle, sew together mid back and felt in a washing machine. HAT: Cast on 115-122-122 stitches on circular needle size 9 mm with DROPS Snow. Work the entire piece back and forth in stocking stitch (first row is from wrong side). Purl 1 row and knit 1 row. Read DECREASE TIP-1! On next row decrease as follows: Work 9 stitches, * work 2 stitches together, work 14-15-15 stitches *, work from *-* 6 times in total, work 2 stitches together and work 8-9-9 stitches = 108-115-115 stitches. Work until piece measures 6-7-7 cm. REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION! On next row decrease as follows in the different sizes: SIZE S-M: Work every 8th and 9th stitch together = 96 stitches. On next row decrease as follows: * Work 2 stitches, work 2 stitches together, work 3 stitches, work 2 stitches together*, work from *-* 10 times in total, work 2 stitches, work 2 stitches together and work 2 stitches = 75 stitches. Work until piece measures 10 cm. SIZE M/L: Work 8 stitches, * work 2 stitches together, work 6 stitches *, work from *-* 12 times in total, work 2 stitches together and work 9 stitches = 102 stitches. On next row decrease as follows: Work 2 stitches, work 2 stitches together, * work 1 stitch, work 2 stitches together*, work from *-* 3 times, ** work 3 stitches, work 2 stitches together**, work from **-** a total of 15 times, work from *-* a total of 4 times and work 2 stitches = 79 stitches. Work until piece measures 11 cm. SIZE L/XL: Work 8 stitches, * work 2 stitches together, work 6 stitches*, work from *-* a total of 12 times, work 2 stitches together and work 9 stitches = 102 stitches. On next round decrease as follows: * Work 3 stitches, work 2 stitches together*, work from *-* a total of 20 times and work 2 stitches = 82 stitches. Work until piece measures 11 cm. ALL SIZES: = 75-79-82 stitches, piece measures approx. 10-11-11 cm. Work until piece measures 36-39-41 cm from cast-on edge. Now decrease as follows: Decrease 10-11-11 stitches evenly – read DECREASE TIP-2! = 65-68-71 stitches. Work 2 rows in stocking stitch. Decrease 10-11-11 stitches evenly = 55-57-60 stitches. Work 2 rows in stocking stitch. Decrease 11-11-12 stitches evenly = 44-46-48 stitches. Work 2 rows in stocking stitch. Decrease 11-11-12 stitches evenly = 33-35-36 stitches. Work 2 rows in stocking stitch. Decrease 11-11-12 stitches evenly = 22-24-24 stitches. Work 2 rows in stocking stitch. Work all stitches together 2 by 2 = 11-12-12 stitches. Piece measures approx. 47-50-52 cm in total. Cut the yarn. Pull yarn through the remaining stitches, tighten and fasten. ASSEMBLY: Sew hat together mid back, sew in front loop of outermost stitch. FELTING: The piece can be felted either in the washing machine or the tumble dryer – read description below. Remember: Subsequent washes are as for a normal wool garment. IN WASHING MACHINE: Washing machines will vary when felting. If the piece is not felted enough, it can be felted again. If it is felted too much, it can be stretched to the correct size while still wet. DO THE FOLLOWING: Lay the piece in the washing machine, using a programme of approx. 40 minutes (not a wool programme). Wash at 40 degrees without pre-wash, detergent is optional. After washing, shape the piece while it is still wet. IN TUMBLE DRYER: Felting in a tumble dryer gives good control over the degree of felting. The tumble dryer can be opened during drying to check the size of the piece. If it is not felted enough it can be thoroughly wetted and felted again. If it is felted too much it can be stretched to the correct size while still wet. DO THE FOLLOWING: Lay the piece in water so it becomes completely wet, then place it in the tumble dryer and begin the drying process. Dry to the desired size, checking regularly. |
