I can't find an explanation for decrease tip 2.

Thanks for your feedback, it has now been fixed, the decrease tip 2 was wrongly called "increase tip 2" instead. Happy knitting!

Hello , Do you work the purl stitches 1 row below every other row too ? Purl stitches are very difficult to keep tidy because of the difference in tension caused by knit stitch being worked 1 row below.Any tips for maintaining tension would be appreciated. Mant Thanks Thank you

Hello Michelle Forbes! You only knit Fisherman’s rib stitch in the stitch below, purled stitches are knitted normally. Finishing your work properly, by washing it lightly after finishing, will even out the stitches. Happy knitting!

------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- PATTERN: Hat: See diagrams A.1 and A.2. Mittens: See diagrams A.3 and A.4. DECREASE TIP-1 (evenly spaced): To work out how to decrease evenly, count the total number of stitches on needle (e.g. 42 stitches) and divide by number of decreases to be made (e.g. 4) = 10.5. In this example decrease by knitting together alternately each 9th and 10th stitch and each 10th and 11th stitch. DECREASE TIP-2 (top of mitten): Work until there are 2 stitches left before the marker-stitch, purl 2 together, work the marker-stitch as before, purl 2 together (= 2 stitches decreased). INCREASE TIP (thumb gusset on mittens): Increase 1 stitch by making 1 yarn over. On the next round purl the yarn over twisted to avoid a hole. ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- HAT – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The piece is worked in the round with circular needle, bottom up. Change to double pointed needles when necessary. HAT: Cast on 84 stitches with short circular needle size 4 mm and DROPS Air. Knit 1 round, then work rib in the round (knit 1, purl 1) for 4 cm. Change to circular needle size 5 mm and work A.1 (= 6 repeats of 14 stitches). REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION! Repeat A.1 in height until the piece measures 20 cm – finish after a complete repeat in height. There is approx. 5 cm left to finished length; try the hat on and work to desired length. Now begin to decrease for the top of the hat. Work A.2 (= 6 repeats of 14 stitches). When A.2 has been completed there are 24 stitches left. Work 1 round where all stitches are knitted together 2 and 2 = 12 stitches. Cut the strand, pull it through the remaining stitches, tighten and fasten well. The hat measures approx. 25 cm top down. ------------------------------------------------------- MITTENS – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The piece is worked in the round with double pointed needles, bottom up. RIGHT MITTEN: Cast on 42 stitches with double pointed needles size 3 mm and DROPS Air. Knit 1 round, then work rib in the round (knit 1, purl 1) for 4 cm. Change to double pointed needles size 4 mm. Knit 1 round where you decrease 4 stitches evenly spaced – read DECREASE TIP-1 = 38 stitches. The next round is worked as follows: A.3 (= 19 stitches = top of hand), A.4 until there is 1 stitch left on the round (= 6 repeats of 3 stitches) and finish with the first stitch in A.4, so the pattern is symmetrical. Continue this pattern. REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION! When the piece measures 9 cm, insert a marker in the 20th stitch on the round (in the first Fisherman’s rib stitch after A.3). On the next round begin to increase for the thumb gusset on each side of the marker-stitch – read INCREASE TIP (= 2 stitches increased). Increase like this every 2nd round a total of 5 times = 48 stitches. Continue working without further increases until the piece measures 14 cm. The thumb stitches are now placed on a thread; try the mitten on and work to desired length before doing this. On the next round place the 11 thumb-stitches on a thread, continue in the round as before and cast on 1 new stitch over the stitches on the thread = 38 stitches on the round. Continue working as before until the piece measures 22 cm – finish after row 1 or 5 in A.3. Continue working as before, but on the first round decrease 2 stitches over the 9 stitches on the cable (i.e. knit twisted together the first 2 and knit together the last 2 stitches of these 9 stitches) = 36 stitches (the 7 cable-stitches are now worked in stocking stitch to finished length). There is approx. 4 cm left to finished length; try the mitten on and work to desired length before beginning to decrease for the top of the mitten. Insert 1 marker in each side (in the last Fisherman’s rib stitch before A.3 and the first Fisherman’s rib stitch after A.3). There are 17 stitches between the marker-stitches. On the next round decrease 1 stitch on each side of both marker-stitches – read DECREASE TIP-2 (= 4 stitches decreased). Decrease like this every 2nd round a total of 5 times on each side = 16 stitches. Work 2 rounds where all stitches are knitted together 2 and 2 on both rounds = 4 stitches. Cut the strand, pull it through the remaining stitches, tighten and fasten well. The mitten measures approx. 26 cm top down. THUMB: Place the 11 thumb-stitches back on double pointed needles size 4 mm and knit up 2 stitches behind the thumb = 13 stitches. Purl in the round, but continue the Fisherman’s rib stitch from the gusset as before. Work until the thumb measures 5 cm. There is approx. ½ cm left to finished length; try the mitten on and work to desired length. The next round is worked as follows: Purl 2 together until there is 1 stitch left, purl 1 = 7 stitches. Work the next round in the same way = 4 stitches. Cut the strand, pull it through the remaining stitches, tighten and fasten well. LEFT MITTEN: Cast on and work in the same way as the right mitten, but when you start to increase for the thumb gusset work as follows: Increase 1 stitch on each side of the last stitch on the round (the last Fisherman’s rib stitch on the round). Finish the mitten in the same way as the right mitten. |
