MAGIC CIRCLE: When piece is worked in the round, start with this technique to avoid holes in the middle (instead of ch-ring): Hold the yarn end and wind the yarn one time around the index finger to make a loop. Hold the loop with left thumb and middle finger, place the thread over left index finger. Insert hook through the loop, make a YO and pull thread through loop, work 1 ch, then work dc around the loop. When the desired no of dc have been reached, pull the yarn end to tighten the loop. Fasten the yarn end at the back. Continue to work in the round in a circle. WORK IN THE ROUND IN A CIRCLE: After last dc on the round, continue to next round with 1 dc in next dc (= first dc from previous round). NOTE: Insert a marker at the beg of round between last dc and first dc on the round, move the marker upwards. INCREASE TIP: Inc 1 dc by working 2 dc in 1 dc. DECREASE TIP: Dec 1 dc by working 2 dc tog as follows: * Insert hook in next dc, get thread *, repeat from *-* one more time, make a YO and pull thread through all 3 sts on hook. COLOUR CHANGE: To get a nice colour change work last dc on round as follows: Insert hook in last dc, get thread, make a YO with the new colour and pull it through all sts on hook. Continue on to next round with the new colour. -------------------------------------------------------- CHICKEN - LARGE: Work in the round in a circle. ASSEMBLY: Sew the cock's comb at the top of head and the beak to the front of the head. Sew the tail to the back side and the legs to the bottom edge. Embroider eyes with black on the head. Read FELTING below, after felting, shape the chicken while still wet and leave to dry flat. If desired fill the head with some cotton wool and the body with an empty roll of toilet paper. FELTING: The piece can be felted either in the washing machine or the tumble dryer – read description below. Remember: Subsequent washes are as for a normal wool garment. IN WASHING MACHINE: Washing machines will vary when felting. If the piece is not felted enough, it can be felted again. If it is felted too much, it can be stretched to the correct size while still wet. DO THE FOLLOWING: Lay the piece in the washing machine, using a programme of approx. 40 minutes (not a wool programme). Wash at 40 degrees without pre-wash, detergent is optional. After washing, shape the piece while it is still wet. IN TUMBLE DRYER: Felting in a tumble dryer gives good control over the degree of felting. The tumble dryer can be opened during drying to check the size of the piece. If it is not felted enough it can be thoroughly wetted and felted again. If it is felted too much it can be stretched to the correct size while still wet. DO THE FOLLOWING: Lay the piece in water so it becomes completely wet, then place it in the tumble dryer and begin the drying process. Dry to the desired size, checking regularly. |
