Gauge: 22 sts and 30 rows on larger needle in stockinette stitch = 10 x 10 cm Rib: * knit 1, purl 1 *, repeat from * - *. Pattern: See chart (1 chart = 1 repeat). The pattern is shown from the right side and is knit entirely in stockinette stitch. The arrows indicate the starting points for different sizes. Body: Knit the sweater in the round and cut steeks for armholes. Cast on 180-192-204 (216-228-240) sts with coal gray on smaller circular needles; join and place a marker at the join. Knit rib for 4-4-4 (5-5-5) cm. Place a marker at the other side - front and back each have 90-96-102 (108-114-120) sts. Change to larger circular needles and knit Pattern 1 once - start at the appropriate arrow on the chart and knit across the front, start at the arrow again and knit across the back. After Pattern 1 repeat Pattern 2 until the work measures 23-27-30 (35-35-39) cm [9" - 10-5/8" - 11.75" (13.75" - 13.75" - 15.25") - adjust for complete pattern - then knit Pattern 3. At the same time, when the work measures 25-28-29 (33-35-39) cm [ inc 4 sts at each side (these sts are for the steek and are not knitted into the pattern). After Pattern 3 is complete, knit Pattern 4. When the work measures 40-44-46 (51-51-55) cm, bind off the center front 24-24-26 (26-28-28) sts for the neck and knit the rest back and forth on the needles. Then bind off at each neck edge every other row: 3 sts 1 time, 2 sts 1 time, 1 st 1 time. At the same time, when the work measures 42-46-49 (54-54-58) cm, bind off the center back 32-32-34 (34-36-36) sts for the neck. Then bind off 2 sts at each back neck edge on the next row. Bind off after Pattern 4 is complete - the work measures approximately 44-48-51 (56-56-60) cm. Sleeves: Cast on 40-42-44 (46-48-50) sts on smaller double pointed needles with coal gray; join and place a marker at the join. Knit rib for 4-4-4 (5-5-5) cm and at the same time inc 4-6-8 (6-8-6) sts evenly distributed on the last row = 44-48-52 (52-56-56) sts. Change to larger double pointed needles and knit Pattern 1 (center the pattern on the sleeve). After the rib, inc 1 st each side of marker 20-20-23 (25-25-25) times: Size 3/4 years: alternately every 2nd and 3rd row Size 5/6 years: every 3rd row Sizes 7/8 + 9/10 + 11/12 years: alternately every 3rd and 4th row Size 13/14 years: every 4th row = 84-88-98 (102-106-106) sts. After Pattern 1 repeat Pattern 2 until the work measures 23-27-31 (34-38-40) cm - adjust for complete pattern. After Pattern 2 knit Pattern 5 once - the work measures approximately 25-29-33 (36-40-42) cm. Now knit 2 cm reverse stockinette stitch for a seam allowance over the cut edge on the body. Bind off. Assembly: Sew a marker thread in the center of the steek sts on either side. Sew two machine seams around the marker thread, 1st seam = 1/2 stitch from the marker thread, 2nd seam = 1/2 stitch from first seam. Cut steeks for armholes. Sew shoulder seams. Pick up approximately 82-98 sts around the neck on smaller double pointed needles with coal gray; join and knit rib for 6 cm. Fold the rib over against the wrong side and sew. Sew the sleeves to the body from the right side as follows: Sew alternately a stitch in the last row on the sleeve before the seam allowance and a stitch on the body after the machine seam. Turn the sweater inside out and sew the seam allowance from the sleeve over the cut edge on the body by hand. Socks: See pattern under Model No. 52-10. |
