Hi Hi! I am wondering if there would be an effective way to turn this jumper into a zip-up? This pattern is beautiful, and I'd love to knit it, but I don't think I'd use it often as a jumper, and I'm not sure if the front cables might warp if I attempted splitting A.10, and then sewed on a zipper. I figure the neckline is easy enough to slightly alter, its the cables that give me pause (I'm relatively new to cables). Let me know your thoughts!

Hi Davis, You could work a few stitches of moss stitch mid-front (after and before the cables on each front piece), using these stitches to divide the cables and then be able to cut open the front for the zip. Perhaps work a size smaller body so the extra stitches would not make the jacket too large. Regards, Drops Team.

Buon lavoro!

Beautiful :) I'm making size M the left shoulder- is there realy 8 cm purls before the A4 pattern begins? will the shoulder mid be then at 4cm( in the mid of the 8 cm)? Somehow confused.... Thanx in advance, Jerry
02.10.2026 - 06:46DROPS Design answered:
Dear Jerry, on left front piece, you will work pattern as established on row 2 (from RS) and row 3 (from WS) until piece measures 8 cm from the stitches picked up on shoulder, then you will work A.4 instead at the beginning of the row increasing for neck after the first 3 sts. Happy knitting!

------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- PATTERN: See diagrams A.1 to A.10. Choose diagram for your size. The diagrams show the pattern from the right side. Remember, the diagrams are read from left to right when working from the wrong side. The diagrams are repeated for varying numbers of rows. INCREASE TIP-1: INCREASE 1 STITCH TOWARDS LEFT – from RIGHT SIDE: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the row below, pick up the strand from the front and knit through the stitch-loop that lies on the back of the needle. INCREASE 1 STITCH TOWARDS THE RIGHT- from RIGHT SIDE: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the row below, pick up the strand from the back and knit through the stitch-loop that lies on the front of the needle. INCREASE TIP-2: INCREASE 1 STITCH TOWARDS THE RIGHT- from WRONG SIDE: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the row below, pick up the strand from the back and purl through the stitch-loop that lies on the front of the needle. INCREASE 1 STITCH TOWARDS LEFT – from WRONG SIDE: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the row below, pick up the strand from the front and purl through the stitch-loop that lies on the back of the needle. DECREASE TIP-1 (for sleeves): Decrease 1 stitch on each side of the marker-stitch as follows: Work until there are 2 stitches left before the marker-stitch, purl 2 together, knit 1 (marker-stitch), purl 2 twisted together (2 stitches decreased). KNITTING TIP: When working short rows, there will be a small hole after each turn. This hole can be closed by tightening the strand or using the technique German Short Rows as follows: Slip the first stitch purl-wise with the strand in front, take the strand over the right needle and tighten well from the back (2 loops on the needle). These loops are worked together on the next row. DECREASE TIP-2: All decreases are worked from the right side. Decrease 1 stitch on each side of the marker-stitch. Start 1 stitch before the marker-stitch, place 1 stitch on cable needle behind the piece, slip 1 stitch (= marker-stitch), knit together the next stitch + stitch from cable needle, pass the slipped stitch over. ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- JUMPER – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The pattern uses both long and short needles; start with the length which fits the number of stitches and change when necessary. The piece is started back and forth, casting on stitches at the back of the neck and working the back piece top down, while increasing stitches on each side for the shoulders, which become slightly diagonal. The back piece is worked as far as the armholes. The front piece is then worked in 2 sections, knitting up stitches along 1 back shoulder, working pattern and increasing for the neckline. This is repeated on the other shoulder. The 2 front sections are joined when the neckline is finished and worked as far as the armholes. The front and back pieces are joined on the same circular needle and the body is worked in the round. Stitches are knitted up around the armholes for the sleeves, which are started back and forth with short rows for the sleeve cap, then finished in the round. Stitches are knitted up around the neckline and the neck is worked in the round to finish. BACK PIECE: The piece is worked back and forth on circular needle. Cast on 25-25-27-27-29-29-29 stitches with circular needle size 5.5 mm, 1 strand DROPS Daisy and 1 strand DROPS Kid-Silk (2 strands) or use 1 strand DROPS Karisma + 1 strand DROPS Kid-silk (2 strands). Work PATTERN – read explanation above, increasing on each side as follows: ROW 1 (wrong side): Purl. ROW 2 (right side): Read INCREASE TIP-1. Knit 3, increase 1 stitch towards the left, work A.1 until there are 3 stitches left on the row (the pattern begins and ends symmetrically on both sides), increase 1 stitch towards the right, knit 3. ROW 3 (wrong side): Read INCREASE TIP-2. Purl 3, increase 1 stitch towards the right, work A.1 until there are 3 stitches left on the row (the increased stitches are worked into A.1), increase 1 stitch towards the left, purl 3. AFTER ROW 3: Work ROWS 2 and 3 a total of 13-13-14-14-16-16-16 times (26-26-28-28-32-32-32 rows worked) = 77-77-83-83-93-93-93 stitches. Insert 1 marker outermost on one side; the piece is now measured from here! Continue A.1 with 3 stocking stitches on each side until the yoke measures 12-11-11-9-12-8-5 cm from the marker, down the armhole. Remember to maintain the knitting tension. Now increase for the armholes. INCREASE FOR ARMHOLES: ROW 1 (right side): Remember INCREASE TIP-1. Knit 3, increase 1 stitch towards the left, continue A.1 until there are 3 stitches left on the row, increase 1 stitch towards the right, knit 3. ROW 2 (wrong side): Continue A.1 with 3 purled stitches on each side (the increased stitches are worked into A.1). Work ROWS 1 and 2 a total of 1-3-3-6-4-9-13 times (2-6-6-12-8-18-26 rows worked) = 79-83-89-95-101-111-119 stitches. Continue working until the piece measures 13-14-14-15-16-17-18 cm, from the marker down the armhole, finishing after a row from the right side. Cut the strand and place the stitches on a stitch holder. Work the left front piece along the left back piece as follows. LEFT FRONT PIECE: Find the left back shoulder: Lay the back piece flat, right side up, with the stitch holder/thread towards you; left side of piece = left shoulder. Start from the right side by the neck on the left back shoulder and knit up 1 stitch in each row worked, inside the outermost stitch as far as the armhole, in addition knit up 3 stitches down the side of the back piece = 29-29-31-31-35-35-35 shoulder-stitches. All measurements on the front piece are taken from this knitted-up row. ROW 1 (wrong side): Purl and increase 5-5-6-6-5-5-5 stitches evenly spaced = 34-34-37-37-40-40-40 stitches. ROW 2 (right side): Knit 3, purl 2, work A.2, purl 9-9-9-9-10-10-10, A.2, purl 2-2-3-3-3-3-3, work 3-3-5-5-7-7-7 stitches of A.1, knit 3. ROW 3 (wrong side): Purl 3, work 3-3-5-5-7-7-7 stitches of A.1, knit 2-2-3-3-3-3-3, A.2, knit 9-9-9-9-10-10-10, A.2, knit 2, purl 3. Work ROWS 2 and 3 until A.2 is finished. The piece measures approx. 8 cm from the marker (with the next row from the right side). Now increase for the neckline. INCREASE FOR NECKLINE: ROW 1 (right side): Work the first 3 stitches in A.4, increase 1 stitch towards the left – remember INCREASE TIP-1, work the rest of A.4, work A.3 across A.2, purl 2-2-3-3-3-3-3, work 3-3-5-5-7-7-7 stitches of A.1, knit 3. ROW 2 (wrong side): Continue the established pattern; the increased stitches are worked into the pattern as shown in A.4 (inside 3 stocking stitches by the neckline). Work ROWS 1 and 2 a total of 7 times ( 14 rows worked) = 41-41-44-44-47-47-47 stitches. Cut the strand and place the stitches on a stitch holder. Work the right shoulder along the right back shoulder as follows. RIGHT FRONT PIECE: Start from the right side by the armhole on the right back shoulder. Start 3 stitches down on the back piece and knit up 3 stitches to the top, then knit up 1 stitch in each row worked along the shoulder, inside the outermost stitch as far as the neck = 29-29-31-31-35-35-35 shoulder-stitches. All measurements on the front piece are taken from this knitted-up row. ROW 1 (wrong side): Purl and increase 5-5-6-6-5-5-5 stitches evenly spaced = 34-34-37-37-40-40-40 stitches. ROW 2 (right side): Knit 3, work 3-3-5-5-7-7-7 stitches of A.1, purl 2-2-3-3-3-3-3, work A.6, purl 9-9-9-9-10-10-10, A.6, purl 2, knit 3. ROW 3 (wrong side): Purl 3, knit 2, work A.6, knit 9-9-9-9-10-10-10, A.6, knit 2-2-3-3-3-3-3, work 3-3-5-5-7-7-7 stitches of A.1, purl 3. Work ROWS 2 and 3 until A.6 is finished. The piece measures approx. 8 cm from the marker (with the next row from the right side). Now increase for the neckline. INCREASE FOR NECKLINE: ROW 1 (right side): Knit 3, work 3-3-5-5-7-7-7 stitches of A.1, purl 2-2-3-3-3-3-3, work A.7 across A.6, work A.8 until there are 3 stitches left on the row, increase 1 stitch towards the right – remember INCREASE TIP-1, work the last 3 stitches of A.8. ROW 2 (wrong side): Continue the established pattern; the increased stitches are worked into the pattern as shown in A.8 (inside 3 stocking stitches by the neckline). Work ROWS 1 and 2 a total of 7 times ( 14 rows worked) = 41-41-44-44-47-47-47 stitches. The front pieces are now joined: Start from the right side on the right front piece. Knit 3, work 3-3-5-5-7-7-7 stitches A.1, purl 2-2-3-3-3-3-3, work A.7, A.9 across the first 24-24-24-24-26-26-26 stitches of A.8, knit 3-3-3-3-2-2-2, cast on 11-11-11-11-13-13-13 stitches, knit the first 3-3-3-3-2-2-2 stitches on the left front piece, work A.5 across the last 24-24-24-24-26-26-26 stitches of A.4, work A.3, purl 2-2-3-3-3-3-3, work 3-3-5-5-7-7-7 stitches A.1, knit 3 = 93-93-99-99-107-107-107 stitches. Continue this pattern back and forth, with the 17 cast-on stitches worked in A.10. Work until the piece measures 24-23-25-23-26-22-19 cm from the picked-up row. Now increase for the armholes. INCREASE FOR ARMHOLES: ROW 1 (right side): Knit 3, increase 1 stitch towards the left, work as before until there are 3 stitches left on the row, increase 1 stitch towards the right, knit 3. ROW 2 (wrong side): Work as before (the increased stitches are worked into A.1). Work ROWS 1 and 2 a total of 1-3-3-6-4-9-13 times (2-6-6-12-8-18-26 rows worked) = 95-99-105-111-115-125-133 stitches. Continue working until the piece measures 25-26-28-29-30-31-32 cm, from the picked-up row at the top of the front piece, finishing after a row from the right side. The front and back pieces are now joined for the body, and the piece is now measured from here. BODY: Work the 95-99-105-111-115-125-133 stitches on the front piece, cast on 1-1-1-3-3-3-5 stitches (mid-under the sleeve), work the 79-83-89-95-101-111-119 stitches on the back piece, cast on 1-1-1-3-3-3-5 stitches (mid-under the sleeve) = 176-184-196-212-222-242-262 stitches. NOTE! The new stitches under each sleeve are worked in double moss stitch. If these stitches do not match the stitches on the body, adjust by decreasing 1 stitch so the pattern fits. The round starts in the middle of the cast-on stitches under one sleeve. The 3 stocking stitches on each side are also worked in moss stitch. Continue the pattern in the round until the piece measures 48-50-52-53-55-56-58 cm from the cast-on edge mid-back. Change to circular needle size 4 mm. Work rib (knit 1 and purl 1). AT THE SAME TIME decrease 1 stitch in each cable (5 decreased stitches); work rib with 1 knitted stitch on each side of each cable and adjust the stitch count so the rib also matches the moss stitch between each cable. When the rib measures 4-4-4-5-5-6-6 cm, cast off with rib. The jumper measures approx. 52-54-56-58-60-62-64 cm from mid-back and 54-56-58-60-62-64-66 cm from the top of the shoulder. SLEEVES: The sleeve is worked top down. Lay the piece flat and insert 1 marker at the top of the armhole. NOTE: This is not the same as the knitted-up row on the front piece but approx. 6 to 7 cm down the front piece. Use circular needle size 5 mm. Start in the middle of the cast-on stitches under the sleeve and knit up 56-58-62-70-72-78-82 stitches around the armhole, with equal numbers of stitches on each side of the marker. Work A.1 back and forth with short rows for the sleeve cap (to give the sleeve a better fit), starting from mid-under the sleeve as follows: ROW 1 (right side): Knit until there are 8-8-10-10-10-12-12 stitches left before the marker mid-top of shoulder, work A.1 across the next 16-16-20-20-20-24-24 stitches, turn – read KNITTING TIP. ROW 2 (wrong side): Work A.1 across the first 20-20-24-24-24-28-28 stitches, turn. ROW 3 (right side): Work A.1 until you have worked 2 stitches past the previous turn, turn. ROW 4 (wrong side): Work A.1 until you have worked 2 stitches past the previous turn, turn. ROW 5 (right side): Work A.1 until you have worked 2 stitches past the previous turn, turn. ROW 6 (wrong side): Work A.1 until you have worked 2 stitches past the previous turn, turn. Repeat ROWS 5 and 6 until you have turned a total of 12-14-14-16-16-18-24 times (6-7-7-8-8-9-12 times each side, with the last row from the wrong side). AFTER THE LAST TURN: After the last row 6, turn and work from the right side to the beginning of the round (mid-under the sleeve), working all stitches into A.1. Insert 1 marker in the middle stitch under the sleeve; it is used when decreasing. Allow it to follow your work onwards. Work A.1 in the round. AT THE SAME TIME when the sleeve measures 1 cm from the join, decrease 2 stitches mid-under the sleeve - read DECREASE TIP, decreasing 2-2-2-3-3-4-4 times every 2nd round, then 4-4-5-7-7-7-8 times every 2-2-2-1½-1½-1½-1½ cm = 44-46-48-50-52-56-58 stitches. Continue working until the sleeve measures 47-48-47-47-45-45-46 cm from the shoulder. Change to double pointed needles size 4 mm. Work rib (knit 1 and purl 1), AT THE SAME TIME increase 10 stitches in all sizes evenly on the first round = 54-56-58-60-62-66-68 stitches. When the rib measures 4-4-4-5-5-6-6 cm, cast off with rib. The sleeve measures approx. 51-52-51-52-50-51-52 cm from the shoulder. NECK: Use circular needle size 4 mm and 1 strand of each quality (2 strands). Start from the right side by one shoulder-line. Knit up 88 to 98 stitches around the neckline inside the outermost stitch; the stitch count should be divisible by 2. Insert 1 marker in the middle stitch mid-front. Work rib (knit 1 and purl 1), making sure the marker-stitch is knitted. Decrease 1 stitch every 2nd round, each side of the marker-stitch (= knitted stitch) – read DECREASE TIP-2, a total of 8 times. Continue the rib until the neck measures 8-8-8-8-9-9-9 cm. Cast off with rib. |
