How to make felted wool balls

Felted wool balls are a simple and inexpensive project. They can be strung together into colourful garlands, used as pet toys or even placed in a decorative bowl to brighten up your home. With just leftover, pure wool yarn you can create these charming little accents in any colour and size you like!

To begin, choose a yarn made of pure wool (avoid superwash yarns as they won’t felt properly). A yarn like DROPS Snow works beautifully, and it’s available in lots of colours.

Wind the yarn tightly into a ball in the size you want. Make as many balls as you need.

Once your balls are ready, place them inside a nylon stocking.

Tie off the stocking with thread at the ends and between each ball, so they don’t felt together during the process.

Next, wash the stocking in the washing machine using a detergent without enzymes or optical bleach. Set the wash to 40ºC / 104F degrees with a normal spin cycle and skip the pre-wash. When the cycle is finished, remove the balls from the stocking and let them dry completely.

Now you have felted balls to decorate with!

After use, make sure to wash your felted balls using the wool program so they don’t continue to felt.

Could you use these felted balls or even smaller as beads? I would like to create them to make a necklace with the felted beads...

DROPS Design answered:

Dear Sandra, we do not have this experience, but it's worth a try. Follow the instructions, but do not wind the yarn into a ball, but cut small pieces of Snow (0,5 - 1 cm). Put the yarn (the small pieces and not too much yarn), inside a nylon stocking. Make a knot with some thread between the "balls" so that they don`t felt together. It might work. Happy felting!

Will these come apart after they have dried? or do they stay hard?

DROPS Design answered:

Dear Alice, when they are felted, they should stay hard so that you can string them together to make a garland as shown in the video. Happy felting!

Herlige fargerike kuler.
