Knit the pocket separate and put the sts on hold.
Work the front piece until position for the pocket.
Now work the sts from center front edge to where the pocket starts, put the same number of sts as there are on the pocket on a st holder or waste yarn for pocket opening, knit the sts from the pocket and then remaining sts on row. Continue to work front piece as before on all sts.
When finished put sts from holder on needle. Knit an edge and then bind off. Sew sides of pocket edge to front. Sew pocket lining to wrong side in such a way that the sts do not show on right side.

In this DROPS video we show how to work 2 double pockets at the same time working the body, like the “Autumn Woods” jumper in DROPS 236-8. Same technique is used when working back and forth. How to work a loose pocket on the inside of a garment

In this DROPS video we show how we work a loose pocket on the inside of a garment, which is worked to the jacket "Meet the Sun" in DROPS 200-6. We have already worked the 1st part of the pocket (which will lie closest to the garment) and one front piece, and start the video by putting stitches from the front piece to a stitch holder and work the first part of the pocket to the front piece. Then we put the stitch back from the stitch holder back to the needle and work the 2nd part of the pocket (which will lie close to the body, but when we work this part it will be on the outside of the garment). Sew the pockets parts inside the 1 edge stitch. Then fasten to the inside of the jacket with one small neat stitch in each of the bottom corners We use the yarn DROPS Snow in the video. You also need to read the pattern as well as watch the video. You will find a pattern with this pocket by clicking on the picture below.

How to work a pocket on a piece - worked top down

In this DROPS video we show how we work a pocket on a swatch that is knitted from top to bottom. We have already worked a few cm/inches and start the video where the top of the pocket should be. Work X number of stitches with the main color (green), then knit X number of stitches with a left over yarn, (these stitches - light burgundy, should be removed afterwards). Put these stitches back on the left needle, then knit over these stitches with the main color, continue with stockinette stitch to the specified length written in your pattern. Now remove the stitches that were knit in the left over yarn. Put these stitches on 2 needles, use a smaller needle size than that is used if you want. Then knit these stitches together. Knit stockinette stitches over these stitches to the same length as the rest of the swatch, optionally with X number of increase and edge stitches in the sides. When both of them have the same length, knit these pieces together. We use the yarn DROPS Snow in the video

In this DROPS video we show how to assembly a pocket to a garment. The pocket sews on in the st inside 1 edge st. To see a pattern with this technique, go to: DROPS 166-2

On a row from WS, P the number of stiches given for pocket. Slip these last worked pocket sts on a holder (or dpn), these sts will be knitted up for pocket later, P rem sts on row. On next row knit up 1 st at the back of each st slipped on stitch holder. Continue in stocking st. When front piece is finished, slip the sts from holder on one front piece back on needle. Work pocket as described in pattern and finally sew each side of pocket neatly to front piece. To see a pattern with this technique, see: DROPS 142-1

On our sample we work on 24 sts. Work next row from RS: K20, slip the last 16 sts that were worked on a thread or a stitch holder for pocket flap, K4. On next row cast on 16 new sts over sts on holder and continue in stockinette st Later slip the 16 sts from thread/holder back on needle. Work rib K2/P2 with 1 st in garter st and K 2 in each side (seen from RS). When pocket flap measures 1", loosely bind off with K over K and P over P. Sew pocket flap to piece with neat sts in each side. Sew pocket opening to bottom of pocket flap (where sts were put on a stitch holder) on the back of piece.
