I am making up diagram for pattern of Sweet Scarborough Hat. Drops 140-8. When you reach the 1st stitch on line 7. It tells you need to do a thumb stitch. I am making a hat, not mittens. Could you please explain what I need to do at this stitch. Thank you. Helen.

Dear Mrs Beer, work the stitch with a star with red on hat. Happy knitting!

I made 3 gauge squares before starting the hat pattern and ended up using 3.5 mm and 4mm needles. This made a satisfactory hat which I am pleased with.

Bon tricot!

I love working this mitten, but I'm having trouble with the increase for the thumb gusset. The star indicates the first thumb stitch, but does that mean all the first stitches on the right in A-1 are all to be part of the thumb gusset? The pattern indicates I will have a total of 60 stitches once the thumb gusset is done, but won't I have 61 because 48 stitches on needles plus 13 equals 61. Confused. Also, for the very first thumb stitch should the increases be red or white?
07.07.2018 - 18:45DROPS Design answered:
Dear Marian, the stitch with a star in A.1 is the st for thumb. On next round, work A.2 over this st (= work it in red and make a YO on each side (= 3 sts for thumb) and A.1 over the remaining 47 sts. When A.2 is done you have increased 12 sts + 1 st = there are 13 sts for thumb + 47 sts for the mitten = 60 sts. Happy knitting!

Sweet Scarborough hat. I am having to knit a second hat as this one is too small for an adult. Adding 14 stitches at the back isn't enough. I'm adding two pattern repeats to be large enough. I don't think my tension is too tight as the gloves are OK.

Knitted DROPS mittens and hat with ear flaps and Norwegian pattern in ”Karisma”.
DROPS 140-8 |
|||||||||||||||||||
PATTERN: See diagram A-1 for hat, and diagram A-1 and A-2 for mittens. Diagrams are worked in stocking st. ------------------------------------------------------- EAR FLAP: Beg by working the ear flaps back and forth on 2 double pointed needles size 3 mm. Cast on 7 sts with wine red. K back and forth on all rows (= garter st). At the same time on 2nd row inc 1 st in each side by making 1 YO inside outermost st, on next row K YOs twisted to avoid holes. Repeat inc every other row 5 more times and then every 4th row 4 times = 27 sts. Work until ear flap measures 8 cm. Put piece aside and knit another ear flap. HAT: Worked in the round. Work sts from one ear flap (= 27 sts) on to circular needle size 2.5 mm with wine red, cast on 44 new sts (= front), work sts from the other ear flap (= 27 sts) and cast on 14 new sts (= back) = 112 sts in total. NOW MEASURE PIECE FROM HERE! P 1 round and K 1 round. Continue in rib = K 2/P 2 for 6 rounds. Switch to circular needle size 3 mm and continue with diagram A-1 (= 14 repetitions). REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION! When A-1 has been worked, work with wine red until finished measurements. AT THE SAME TIME when piece measures 17 cm (measured without ear flaps), insert 8 markers 14 sts apart. On next round, dec 1 st after every marker by K 2 tog. Repeat dec every other round 7 more times and then every round 4 times = 16 sts remain on needle. Work 1 round where all sts are K tog 2 by 2. Cut the thread and pull it through the remaining sts and tighten tog. The hat measures approx. 23 cm without ear flaps. MITTENS: RIGHT MITTEN: Worked in the round on double pointed needles. Cast on 52 sts on double pointed needles size 2.5 mm with wine red. Work rib = K 2/P 2 for 10 cm. Switch to double pointed needles size 3 mm, work 1 round in stocking st while at the same time dec 4 sts evenly = 48 sts. Continue with diagram A-1. REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION! When it has been worked up to row marked with 1 arrow, beg inc for thumb gusset – inc on each side of thumb st by making 1 YO, on next round K YOs twisted to avoid holes. Thumb sts are worked according to diagram A-2. After all inc, there are 13 thumb sts and 60 sts in total. When last row in A-2 has been worked, slip the 13 thumb sts on a stitch holder. On next round, cast on 1 new st behind thumb sts = 48 sts in total. Work A-1 until diagram has been worked, then continue with wine red. When piece measures 15 cm (measured after rib), insert 6 markers 8 sts apart. On next round, dec 1 st after every marker by K 2 tog. Repeat dec every 4th round 1 more time and then every other round 4 times = 12 sts remain on needle. On next round, K all sts tog 2 by 2 = 6 sts, cut the thread, pull it through the remaining sts and tighten. The entire mitten measures approx. 29 cm. THUMB: Slip the 13 sts over thumb gusset on double pointed needles size 3 mm and knit in addition up 3 sts along the edge behind the thumb sts = 16 sts. Work in stocking st in the round with wine red for approx. 6 cm, then K all sts tog 2 by 2. Cut the thread and pull it through the remaining 8 sts and tighten tog. LEFT MITTEN: Work as right mitten. |
